mota

oy.

Apparently for Howie Rose, the moral code of the ballplayer trumps getting the leadoff guy out. If he’s right, and Maine plunked Lopez to send a message, that’s one dumb move.

I'm so disgusted with the commentary re: the cheering section

What are they supposed to do. Mets need to spend less time worrying about professionalism and more on winning.

If Maine was throwing at Lopez

wouldn’t he have had a better shot?

Delgado bunt

Why does he not do that more often?

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

I’m not saying he should do it all the time, but there are plenty of situations where he should just try to get on base.

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

carlos

should definitely bunt more often. I’m thinking every time he steps up to the plate.

I love it when

Keith goes over the fundies.

Nothing like

One run out of a bases loaded, nobody out. Go Mets.

by Doc's Sports Picks Guru on May 13, 2008 7:51 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

sac bunting with one out and runners on first and third will do that

Plus Reyes swinging on the first pitch AGAIN after the pitcher is wild

by JohnPeterson on May 13, 2008 7:53 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Reyes

Is unbelievable that way. Time to grow up and be a big league hitter instead of a hacker. I love the guy, don’t get me wrong. He’s my boy. But I’m not going to gloss over the fact that he has A LOT to learn about hitting and he’s still making rookie mistakes just because he’s on my team.

by Doc's Sports Picks Guru on May 13, 2008 7:55 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

in fairness on the bunt

it was John Maine that bunted. If he doesn’t and makes contact it’s likely a dp.

by DoctorK16 on May 13, 2008 7:56 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not really

Gonna knock that move. That was the right call. More lamenting we had two cracks at driving in some runs and we just picked up one on a fielder’s choice.

If they want to send messages, that would have been a good time to do it instead of some cheesy hit batsman. Go out and beat them 8-1 and the message gets sent.

i really don't understand

how anyone can condone sac bunting with runners on 1st and 3rd and 1 out. That’s always terrible.

by JohnPeterson on May 13, 2008 7:59 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

if it was even a decent hitting pitcher like Santana

I might go for it, but Maine is not a hitter. That’s the right move IMO.

by DoctorK16 on May 13, 2008 8:00 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

or

he could get a hit or a fly ball

by JohnPeterson on May 13, 2008 7:58 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

very unlikely JP

And he’s gotta hit a deep fly ball as Delgado is the runner on third. He’s the probably the worse hitting pitcher in baseball.

by DoctorK16 on May 13, 2008 8:00 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He's a pitcher

And would you rather take a shot with first and third with the pitcher, or second and third and your All-Star leadoff man?

by Doc's Sports Picks Guru on May 13, 2008 8:00 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

both

which is the likely outcome either way, with a greater probability of scoring when you don’t automatically give up an out with the pitcher hitting

by JohnPeterson on May 13, 2008 8:02 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I gotta agree

His career out rate is 85%.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/m/mainejo01.shtml

Practically anyone else in baseball and I agree with JP, but he hardly knows which end of the bat to hold.

Oy

Come on, Reyes

by JoshNY on May 13, 2008 8:27 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Damn

Delgado smoked that ball, great catch by Milledge. Tough to fault Dr. Teeth there.

by JoshNY on May 13, 2008 8:40 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

this game

is a straight-up continuation of last night

2 runs on 9 hits for the Mets
2 runs on 2 hits for the Nats

ughhhhh

Edison

Volsquez is Pedro light, the motion the pitches everything.

Uh-oh

Tatis is wearing #17, time for another Keith rant about how someone unworthy is wearing his number!

by JoshNY on May 13, 2008 8:58 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

wow.

Reyes is back to about his 2004 form—he won’t take a single pitch.

by anonymous on May 13, 2008 9:04 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If he keeps it up

Reyes will get the overrated tag hung around his neck. This goes back to last September. It may not be a slump, but a trend

YES!

I’m pretty sure 2 runs on 11 hits would drive me mad

Sanchez

hasn’t been great lately. Hope he’s on. The set-up problem could get bad.

all he needed to do was hit from the left side

nice hit there. but why is he in the dugout?

by gogomets on May 13, 2008 9:42 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Maine start

Johnny boy had a heck of a day. They better hang on to this one for him.

Take it to Church.

Ryan Church is 8th in the league in RBI. Who saw that coming?

I was inspired by Eric's comment that Olerud had the best 3-year run as a Met outside Carlos Beltran to look at a few different Mets, and when I noticed that two of my all-time favorite players (Alfonzo and Strawberry) were kinda screwed by having (relatively)bad seasons in between some really good seasons, I decided to see which Mets had the best 3 seasons, period (non-consecutively). Beltran still comes out on top, but my all-time favorite player Alfonzo comes in 2nd place, and him and Straw are the only two to have three 6.0+ WAR seasons. Also interesting that Hundley comes out ahead of Gary Carter, Cleon Jones almost finishes ahead of Mike Piazza, and Joe McEwing doesn't make the list.
