what, I can't vote for "maybe"?
That poll is broken without an option for “I have no damn idea anymore, I used to think they were a better team than this, but now I’m starting to have serious doubts.”

that is what's in my heart
My heart is noncommital at the moment. Maybe it’s something I ate.

nah, I abstain
Voter turnout will continue to be a problem, I know.
Pelfrey looks pretty good so far—maybe he and Heilman have some kind of Dorian Grey-esque inverse relationship.

was trying to change the subject away from that line of joking, it feels played out by now
But yes, one candidate speaks to me above all the others: I’m strongly supporting the Presidential candidacy of None of the Above.

seriously
Unless something really goes badly wrong in the next couple innings (not to jinx), this will be two very good starts in a row from Pelfrey. I’m thinking he might actually be in the big leagues for good this time.

Hey, King Hippo is playing!
We’re 39 games into the season – is this the first point that both the projected catchers on our 25-man roster are healthy?

the poll, I think
I voted yes, with my heart.
I also ordered a Savannah Sand Gnats cap today, but I think I got ripped off.
They are a Mets A affiliate down there.

I agree.
I think it would be perfectly 2008-y if the Mets can’t even plate a run here for Pelfrey who’s piching the game of his life.
I like Pelfrey this year. His numbers aren’t stellar, but he’s young and he’s showing himself to be a pretty reliable starter who has plenty of change to improve as the season goes on. Plus, he’s got plenty more upside, unlike the trash we just dumped.

Cue Howie et al
It has now been blank blank games played by the New York Mets and they still have never pitched a no-hitter. It may be one of the most amazing stats in sports.
by Endys Game on May 15, 2008 2:46 PM EDT 0 recs
What?
They did, too. I had a dream about it a few years ago. Benny Agbayani pitched a 15-inning no-hitter against the Braves in the World Series.

nah
Letting ‘frey start the 8th. He had a good game going, but he’s never gone that long. He only finished the 7th once in his career.
I’d probably be getting on Willie’s case either way, though.

Let’s get something started. Don’t leave Pelf on the hook for this one.

wow.
Ugly play all around, and there went our best shot at tying the game.
by anonymous on May 15, 2008 3:10 PM EDT 0 recs
And again I wonder
Why the fuck are we bunting there? We need more than one run to win the game.
by JoshNY on May 15, 2008 3:11 PM EDT 0 recs
L. Castillo sacrificed into double play third to first to shortstop, J. Reyes out at third
wth does that mean? Why bunt?
by mmxii on May 15, 2008 3:12 PM EDT 0 recs
here is what happened
Castillo bunted Reyes over to second. Reyes saw no one was covering third and tried to advance, but Guzman managed to get the ball and beat Reyes to the bag.

Wow, this game is a bummer.
Even if they manage to win this one, is anyone in the League get nervous when they play the Mets? It’s like they are the team you play so you can lower your ERA three points. Crap.

oh
That’s even worse than I was expecting.
Is it bad that I thought the best shot was for Beltran to steal home there?
by mmxii on May 15, 2008 3:34 PM EDT 0 recs
Oh, good god...
Another demonstration in feeble play. Ya know, Hank had it right…but, it’s the Mets that need to start playing with some emotion. 1-0 AT HOME to Washington. With two great chances to score in the last two innings, and you do THAT?
The Mets still haven’t learned from last year. All the rhetoric was just that. They don’t understand. No one will hand them a thing. They need to go out there and bust their asses and win games.

Doing The Same Old Things
I’m not going to blame that last play on Delgado, but I will point out that he put up another stellar 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.
Our team is just trash right now compared to the other winning clubs in the league. We look exactly like the team that ended 2007: Reyes has his head up his ass, our bullpen is still a wreck but Willie had been trotting out Sosa (before he FINALLY got bounced) and Heilman (his time is WAY over) every day despite them getting bombed, Right field and First Base are two HUGE voids of offensive production because somehow Omar though that this is the year – at the tender age of 55 – that Alou would stay healthy and that Delgado would turn it around. It’s the same old stuff.
There is no energy on this team – thank you Beltran and Reyes – and other than Wright and Church I don’t see much in the way of solid baseball being played. As in the type of ball being played by St. Louis, Arizona, Chicago, and Florida. Look at the makeup of those teams and then look at ours and the difference is pretty obvious. Time to face facts: we are just not a very good team right now. We’re not dead in the water or anything like that. We are a great June-July team and we have a run in us. But we need some moves to be made and we need some new blood. Not sure where it’s going to come from but there are moves to be made. Can’t just keep on doing the same old sh*t.

“Look at the makeup of [St. Louis, Arizona, Chicago and Florida] and then look at ours and the difference is pretty obvious.”
You lost me. What’s the difference, other than that guys are performing as expected (Chicago, Arizona) or better than expected (St. Louis and Florida), for those teams, and worse than expected for the Mets? The Marlins and Diamondbacks have two of the four youngest teams, the Cubs and Cards have two of the seven oldest teams. The makeups are basically the opposite of one another.

Those clubs
Are full of max-effort guys. They have a lot of speed and they get a lot of production from their left-handed bats (we are one of the worst teams in the league against right-handed starters). All three of them get a lot of production from their 1B and all four of their teams have a lot of interchangeable parts that they use on a consistent basis.
And yes, they are getting better production out of their key guys. That helps.
And as for the age thing, that’s misleading. I don’t consider a team “old” if it has a bunch of older, veteran pitchers (like Chicago). The Cubs also have some fossils like Daryl Ward and now Jim Edmonds. But their regulars are a pretty young crew. Same goes with St. Louis.

And
The Marlins aren’t going to be in it all year because their starting pitching is no good. But it won’t be because of their lineup. They have a lot of scrappy, hard-working, solid-hitting guys on that squad. But in the end their starters just aren’t good enough. But if you look at their lineup/fielders and then look at ours you can see the difference.

And "scrappy, hard-working" doesn't mean anything
Is it scrappy that the Marlins are leading the NL in home runs hit and in strikeouts by their hitters? No. Their hitters are hitting well. That’s what matters.

"max-effort guys"
Is bullshit along the lines of “David Eckstein is scrappy” and “Derek Jeter knows how to win.”
The Mets have a lot of speed too. Led the league in steals last year.
The Mets are getting good production from their left-handed bats. Church is playing very well, Schneider (for a guy with a defense-first rep) has an OPS+ over 100. Delgado is underachieving but the other two are overachieving so that’s a wash.
We’re obviously not getting a lot of production from out 1B. I’ve gone over the Delgado-Jacobs thing before, and it should be noted that Jacobs hurts his team with a sub-.300 OBP. We obviously don’t have a Derrek Lee or an Albert Pujols. It’s poor planning by management not to have some sort of a backup plan in place in case Delgado continued the slide he started last year.
Other than Geovany Soto, the Cubs’ regulars are NOT a “pretty young crew”. Theriot is 28, Ramirez is 30, Johnson and Fukudome are 31, Soriano and Lee are 32, DeRosa is 33. Their youngest SP is 27. They’re not over the hill, but it’s a vastly different team makeup from the Diamondbacks or the Marlins. Molina is 25, Duncan is 27, the rest of the Cards’ regulars are 28 or over. Wainwright is 26, the rest of their rotation is 29 or over.
In contrast, Byrnes is 32, Hudson is 30, every other regular on the Diamondbacks is 27 or younger. Big Unit is 44 but all their other starters are 29 or younger. The Marlins’ rotation is Mark Hendrickson and four guys who are 25 or younger. Their five best hitters are all 29 or younger.
The makeups of the Marlins/Diamondbacks and of the Cards/Cubs are the opposite of one another.
The difference is that their players are performing up to or above expectations and ours are (except for a few) performing at or below ex
