Open Thread - Game #28: Mets vs. Diamondbacks (05/03/2008)

New York Mets @ Arizona Diamondbacks

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2008 - Brandon Webb 6-0 6 6 0 0 0 0 41.0 29 11 9 1 14 34 1.98 1.05

Brandon Webb went 6-0 in April with an ERA under two. Mike Pelfrey just completed his first month with an ERA under 4.50 as a big leaguer, and just his second winning month overall (he went 3-1 last September). Pelfrey has been pretty good for most of the season, while Webb is consistently one of the best pitchers in the league.

With Webb going today and Dan Haren on the docket for tomorrow, the Mets really had to win last night against Micah Owings. They roughed up a noticeably wonky Micah Owings and rolled to a 7-2 victory. Carlos Delgado even managed to reach base more times than Owings (3-2), so congrats to those of you who took Big Carlos in the swag contest yesterday.

The game is on the FUX network so, you know, meh.

Kenny Albert and Mark Grace!

Grace is particularly wretched.

well,

at least Big Pelf managed not to kill the team with a huge inning there. Odds still seem to be against him making it through 5+ innings, but who knows.

I think it is safe to say

that Carlos Delgado is not a very good baseball player anymore.

Save America. Impeach Bush

I'm pretty sure he's better than this.

He’s certainly on the downslope of his career, but the guy shouldn’t be as completely done over the course of a season as he looks right now.

Ashland, KY

Brandon Webb, and both the home plate umpire and first base umpire are from there.

Great.

DELGADO

Carlos now owns the puertorriqueño homer record, and now we’ve got a ballgame to watch.

That was sure unlikely!

But I’ll take it while we continue to look for a new first baseman!

Sosa?

There’s no one else who can come in now that the game is close again?

This may be what annoys me the most about Willie

One run down, to him, is never the right time to use good relievers.

Game Over

Augie Ojeda?? Not related to Bobby is he?

by Endys Game on May 3, 2008 7:03 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well

Living in Ohio I didn’t get to see it. I had to watch the Cubs/Cards. Going in I gave this game to the Diamondbacks anyways. Johan will beat Haren tomorrow!

I was inspired by Eric's comment that Olerud had the best 3-year run as a Met outside Carlos Beltran to look at a few different Mets, and when I noticed that two of my all-time favorite players (Alfonzo and Strawberry) were kinda screwed by having (relatively)bad seasons in between some really good seasons, I decided to see which Mets had the best 3 seasons, period (non-consecutively). Beltran still comes out on top, but my all-time favorite player Alfonzo comes in 2nd place, and him and Straw are the only two to have three 6.0+ WAR seasons. Also interesting that Hundley comes out ahead of Gary Carter, Cleon Jones almost finishes ahead of Mike Piazza, and Joe McEwing doesn't make the list.
