Sosa.

Wise at least deserves a chance to fail.

Sosa has failed already.

We've got ourselves a ball club, the Mets of New York town!

Agree

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

by sireric on May 7, 2008 2:44 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I dissent

a mild one. I think Sosa is a pretty bad pitcher but he has been proven slightly useful at times as an innings eater whn one is needed or to get out one or two RIGHT HANDED HITTERS (are you reading this Wille Randolph!!) . Thats it. Wise however I see no value to. He is coming off an arm injury and looked awful to me the brief times he pitched. He also had a terrible second half last year with the Brewers. The bottom line is Sosa and Wise both pretty much stink but at least Sosa has come through for us once in a while.

by Endys Game on May 7, 2008 3:04 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I dissent with the dissent

I thought Wise looked pretty nasty, except for a few bad pitches. I think there is more upside to Wise in the pen than Sosa.

To me, Sosa being an innings eater is like saying someone is a classy hooker. It’s not really a compliment.

by SQUAD on May 7, 2008 3:35 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

One more Sosa note...

Getting him off the team means Willie CAN NOT misuse him anymore. I am in favor of anything that makes Willie’s job simpler.

by SQUAD on May 7, 2008 3:41 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

on another note

No excuses. If Maine wants to be considered a top flight pitcher for this or any other team he needs to give us at least 7 if not 8 quality innings today. I know its early still but we need to give this bullpen some rest!!

by Endys Game on May 7, 2008 3:07 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If Maine wants to be considered a top flight pitcher for this or any other team he needs to give us at least 7 if not 8 quality innings today.

This is hyperbole, but the spirit is there. Maine has been pitching better of late, but he’s not #2 material right now. He needs to keep the walks down, keep his composure out there, and avoid the big innings.

by Eric Simon on May 7, 2008 3:13 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Church

He really has impressed in all facets. He hits, he fields (last night notwithstanding), he throws.

by Eric Simon on May 7, 2008 3:31 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I still miss Lasto

I agree though. Church is a productive player who really should be hitting 2nd in the lineup.

by ams258 on May 7, 2008 3:32 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Definitely,

but with Alou and Delgado sitting out, he needs to be hitting 5th.

by SQUAD on May 7, 2008 3:37 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That's fine with me

But I’d like Church to bat between Reyes and Wright when the regular lineup is playing

by ams258 on May 7, 2008 3:40 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Bad Penny

as he often seems to be against the Mets. I don’t know if he has improved somewhat lately but I know at one point the Mets had 1927 Yankees like numbers against him.

by Endys Game on May 7, 2008 3:39 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

from espn.com (their caps, not mine)

NEW YORK LEFT FIELDER ANGEL PAGAN LEFT THE GAME IN THE THIRD INNING WITH AN APPARENT LEFT SHOULDER INJURY. HE WAS INITIALLY INJURED FALLING INTO THE STANDS WHILE CATCHING A FOUL BALL IN THE BOTTOM OF THE FIRST INNING.

by gogomets on May 7, 2008 4:23 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

7-0

Wooooot! Anyone got change for a Penny? chortle

by Eric Simon on May 7, 2008 4:36 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Why is it...

that we demolish Brad Penny but we can’t do shit against Hong-Chih Kuo?

by JoshNY on May 7, 2008 4:38 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Same reason

D-Dub comes up huge with the bases loaded and the Mets up 8-0 and he can’t do doodily squat when the Mets are trailing.

by Eric Simon on May 7, 2008 4:41 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'd like to note

That the shortstop is Chin-Lung Hu, not Hong-Chih Kuo. Taiwanese Dodgers are not quite than interchangeable…

by ivythesheep on May 7, 2008 4:47 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I know that

I’m talking about the pitcher, the one who made the Mets look terrible last night.

by JoshNY on May 7, 2008 4:48 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

what is this 11-0 shit?

I don’t watch one game and the Mets decide to score all their runs at once? Let’s make our Pythag look all pretty so we have an excuse to win only 85 games.

Ah, being a Mets fan. It ain’t easy being this negative.

by JohnPeterson on May 7, 2008 4:47 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Is for me. :-)

Beltran made 2 of the 3 outs in the 6-run 5th inning.

David Wright MVP Watch: .311/4/14! (through 12 games)

ZaBlanc

I noticed you haven’t updated your David Wright MVP Watch stats in a while. Just for the record, under you advanced clutch system, that last 2B by Wright does not count as clutch correct?

by Endys Game on May 7, 2008 4:55 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Waiting

We’re gonna wait for the slump to end. It wouldn’t be a good MVP watch right now. ;-) There have been no clutch hits in this game except for John Maine’s bases loaded single.

Maine's managing his pitches nicely

Only 76 through six innings. It’s within the realm of possibility that he could go 8 today. (That would be nice because it would give the bullpen some rest AND because it would get Gary and Ron to stop complaining that we haven’t had a starter go longer than 7 yet this season.)

by JoshNY on May 7, 2008 5:11 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

92 pitches through 8

Leave him in there, Willie! If you can’t let your pitcher finish out a game when he’s on track for a two-hit shutout, up 12-0, and under 100 pitches, when can you?

by JoshNY on May 7, 2008 5:33 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'd like to take some credit also

for picking Maine to falter in the swag contest

by Simons on May 7, 2008 5:34 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

chan ho park!

will get 9 straight outs against us.

by gogomets on May 7, 2008 5:09 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Definitely

Our bats have been put away for the flight home. I think we’re going up there with wiffle ball bats or something.

by JoshNY on May 7, 2008 5:26 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i think that was 4 straight rollovers before church’s K. jesus, that’s just laziness.

by gogomets on May 7, 2008 5:27 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

not that i'm complaining

score 12 runs and your pitcher is cruising, who cares right

by gogomets on May 7, 2008 5:28 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Also

It’s not like Park’s been bad this year

by ivythesheep on May 7, 2008 5:28 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

why is it

i’m right on these off-the-cuff predictions and i suck ass at the swag contest? EFF!

by gogomets on May 7, 2008 5:38 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

can i get a hat

or something, eric? maybe a pen?

It doesn't compare to watching on actual TV, of course

But MLB.com Gameday is pretty darn good for a free service

by JoshNY on May 7, 2008 5:31 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Nice outing by Maine

8 IP, 92 pitches, 61 strikes, 2 hits, one walk, no runs. He’s the Maine man today!

Let's Go Mets!

by twassel on May 7, 2008 5:34 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

AND

1-3 with a run and 2 RBI

by JoshNY on May 7, 2008 5:35 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

BOOOOO

He struck out, now only 1-4. That makes his game entirely worthless.

by JoshNY on May 7, 2008 5:39 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Complete game!

Maine’s going for it.

Let's Go Mets!

by twassel on May 7, 2008 5:38 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i'm glad he wasn't throwing a no-no before

that would’ve been worse than that lame dribbler last year that broke it up

by gogomets on May 7, 2008 5:44 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

fuck.

good game johnny. the bullpen thanks you.

I was inspired by Eric's comment that Olerud had the best 3-year run as a Met outside Carlos Beltran to look at a few different Mets, and when I noticed that two of my all-time favorite players (Alfonzo and Strawberry) were kinda screwed by having (relatively)bad seasons in between some really good seasons, I decided to see which Mets had the best 3 seasons, period (non-consecutively). Beltran still comes out on top, but my all-time favorite player Alfonzo comes in 2nd place, and him and Straw are the only two to have three 6.0+ WAR seasons. Also interesting that Hundley comes out ahead of Gary Carter, Cleon Jones almost finishes ahead of Mike Piazza, and Joe McEwing doesn't make the list.
