bizarro DH
So, with a team whose roster is jam-packed with catchers and that has been struggling to field a major-league outfield for weeks, who do you pick for DH? An outfielder, obviously. We need to get as many of those as possible into the lineup.
Yes
I am glad to see we have gone with our absolute best outfield tonight. Woo freaking hoo.

Also
Let’s hear it for yet another West Coast start time. I’m in my last week at work before a month’s holiday; perhaps I can convince myself to stay up for the whole dang game.
by Catsmeat Potter-Pirbright on Jun 16, 2008 9:58 PM EDT reply actions
god, it feels like an eternity just waiting for the first pitch
They really need to do something about having so many of these 10pm starts in the schedule. The Mets can’t be pulling in much of a viewership these days under the best of circumstances…
blame the scheduling
It’s been only one week since the last west coast swing…ridiculous.

dang right!
keep them rally monkeys sad tonight, son.

DH
Why not DH Anderson and put Endy in left?
Maybe Wright should DH a game or two against the AL.
The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.
Of course...
As I write that Gary says the same on the SNY coverage.
The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.
Willie's plan seems to be to rest the stars
He said something on the pre-game about DHing Beltran, Wright, and Reyes one game each.
Willie Needs Some time
with the players before he is fired. So one of these games he’ll chat with David about plans to meet for lunch or something.
Stop being ridiculous
I will throw a Tequiza through your head.

Pelf loved watching Weaver when they were both in college
he was very inspired by Weaver’s aggressiveness… this will be an interesting matchup
Big Pelf
Watching Bradon Webb seemed to do wonders for Big Pelf; let’s hope Weaver doesn’t cause a let-down.

I’m in no hurry to see my scores right now anyway. I don’t think I did very well this weekend.
The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.
Well, I think I killed on Sunday
Picked the scores pretty well. might have broken 70. I want to see it!!
Dub plays a ton
Is it just me, or would Dub playing every inning thus far this season not have been a big deal, say, 15 years ago? Don’t want to sound old or nothin’, but I don’t really want to hear it.
by Catsmeat Potter-Pirbright on Jun 16, 2008 10:15 PM EDT reply actions
It's that way with everything
Bob Gibson used to throw 200 pitches a game in a 3 man rotation and he never whined about a sore shoulder.
The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.
Yay! Some run support for Pelf!
he’s been 51st out of 58 pitchers or something like that, in run support
ZaBlanc
is upset that the home run didn’t come in the top of the ninth.

right, I momentarily forgot how un-clutch that was
Selfish bastard—how dare he not cause Wright to reach base in front of him?
Modernization?
Streamlining for speed?

Apparently
The National League needs to join the 21st century. You know, like removing the names from their jerseys and having the groundskeepers dance to YMCA.

Are you suggesting
that The great Giambino with his glod thong isn’t a real baseball player, because he’s a DH?
The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.
I thought that was officially sanctioned
Isn’t there a rule that any practice appearing in Bull Durham is exempt from criticism?

Or am I getting that wrong?

eh
Not much that coulda been done with that second hit; the double was a bit more disappointing.

BABIP wonder is my guess
Funny how people place a huge importance on steroids changing the game and affecting results and they don’t even understand the fundamental laws that govern the game in the first place
by JohnPeterson on Jun 16, 2008 10:58 PM EDT up reply actions
sure
but people always assume steroids when luck is much more likely a factor
by JohnPeterson on Jun 16, 2008 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions
I guess that's probably more likely
.349 BABIP in 2006 is well higher than the .308 that would be expected from his line drive rate. I guess that might be enough to account for his career-high .495 SLG. For some reason I remembered him hitting more than 19 HR that year, which was why I was inclined to speculate he might’ve had some chemical assistance.
whoa.
I think I just heard Wayne Hagin analyze something. He linked the number of ground balls that Pelfrey’s inducing to his improved performance in the last start. There’s nothing to call that but analysis, right? Someone pinch me, I must be dreaming.
Wait, no jacket?
What in the hell? Is Rick Peterson going incognito to avoid being fired?

okay, Hagin's back to normal
Angels score a run to make it 4-2; Hagin immediately calls “Torii Hunter has cut the Mets’ lead in half!” There’s the broadcaster I know and love.

radio or teevee?
Cos if they said teevee, they are just morons.
by Catsmeat Potter-Pirbright on Jun 16, 2008 11:35 PM EDT up reply actions
philistines
The Red Sox’ radio crew is enjoyable enough.
they may just have a mental block against all things gotham
They’re not homers by any means, and Darling is always good for an astute point or an oddball comment (like his allusion to John Lennon’s lost weekend in yesterday’s game e.g.)
That reminds me - Jon Miller is pretty good
When he’s free of the albatross that is Joe Morgan, that is
i was watching the giants game the other night
no idea why. their uniforms were horrible—very bright orange. anyway, miller was tolerable. he just overdoes everything
Does he overdo the names of Latino players?
I had always assumed that was some ESPN thing but maybe it’s just him.
wasn't paying attention to his pronunciation of latin players' names
but it’s hard to describe. just think of someone who talks as if they’re reading the script of shakespeare play. overly dramatic and shit. i don’t know.
no
he’s not terrible, just a little overdone.

Saw some of him on TV during the playoffs
He’s pretty awesome. Sounds exactly like he does in the video games.
I’m a Rangers fan so I love Sam Rosen, but I can definitely see how his voice would grate on other people.
well, there are the marlins announcers

Comment at B!T
Dmitri Young? Nice guy, but not even in the top half of NL 1Bs offensively, a horrid defender, and oh by the way OF COURSE he’s hurt. And 10 mil over 2 years? Last year, that was an adept reclamation project. This year it’s stupid money for a fat, aging, fat, not that good fat guy.
No context necessary.
that's a setup line, I assume
I think it’s pronounced “bad GM.”

none of it was in close-and-late situations
therefore none of it counted. Beltran’s contribution to this lead being a relatively safe and comfortable one is like the antithesis of clutch… he actually destroyed the potential clutch situations that might happen later in the game.

the OED endorses Gary's version
I think the “koo” version might be an artifact of the candy bar? Anyway, don’t blame me, I voted for Kodos.
In Canada...
They pronounce it “koo-doos”. Or at least, that was what seemed to be the case during the NHL playoffs one year.
oh, thank god
Nice to see a line-smash double play go the Mets’ way for once.
double play to end the game!
and we’re on the other end of it!
Good to be on the winning side
But how are we going to keep it going? There is a lot of catching up to be done.
