Where'd Those Dudes Come From?

In case you were wondering, I killed some time last night and compiled the geneology of everyone on the Mets' 40-man roster. I couldn't find some of the exact dates, denoted by ??. Sort of a fun exercise. This should be 99% accurate, though it's possible that I've missed the origin of some of the early round draft picks the Mets have had (i.e. if they were compensatory picks).

The square brackets denote current denizens of the 40-man roster. Parentheses denote transaction dates.

The Mets had a player named GOOCH?

Good work, Eric. Because this is so awesome, I’ll forgive you for taking four days to update the Swag Contest scoreboard.

I’m pretty much amazed that the Mets traded away a kid named (Arnold) Gooch. What a great name.

You are dumb

It’s Mr. Met. When he landed his spaceship in 1962, the US Government assigned him permanetly to the Mets to keep him safe. On his planet, people have oversized hands, big heads, and hate the Yankees.

Good point.

I forgot about Mr. Met. Maybe he should be the new manager instead.

I thought about...

...putting him on my list of potential managers, but I prefer my Bobby V pipedream.

Maybe that's for someone else

Are the Mets still paying Bobby Bonilla? Maybe part of his compensation deal is a spot on the 40-man until 2015.

funny

but no, they just have an empty spot

Wow

When you put it like that, the Mets have SO MANY expendable players on the 40-man. There are 12 players by my count who are easily replaceable and would not hurt the Mets at all if they were to leave, not counting veterans with large contracts:

Lugo
C. Vargas
Wise
Cancel
Molina
Easley
A. Hernandez
Tatis
M. Anderson
E. Chavez
T. Nixon
A. Pagan

Of course the Mets need SOME players like this, but none of these guys have much value and the Mets have 12 of them on their 40-man. That’s not even counting:

O. Hernandez (questionable value at this point)
Burgos (probably still has some value)

As far as prospects on the 40-man, it’s pretty weak:

J. Vargas
Bostick
Collazo
Muniz
Evans

And there are the following players whose contracts are pretty much untradeable:

P. Martinez
Schoeneweis
B. Schneider
Castillo
Delgado
Alou

Which leaves:

Feliciano (nice free agent find)
Heilman (drafted)
Maine (good trade)
Pelfrey (drafted)
O. Perez (good trade)
D. Sanchez (good trade)
Santana (nice trade, but essentially signed as expensive FA)
J. Smith (drafted)
Wagner (expensive FA)
Castro (nice FA find)
Church (questionable trade)
Reyes (amateur FA)
Wright (drafted)
Beltran (expensive FA)

I don’t know why I did that.

Nice breakdown

And it gives me a good perspective on what Willie was dealing with. Thanks for not posting the number of Win Shares (or VORP) next to their names.

yeah, that was merciful

Also a great relief was how Eric didn’t chart all the chopped-off and dealt-elsewhere branches of this family tree, limiting it to the players who are still here now. It’s a great mercy that the name “Jesus Flores” - much less “Scott Kazmir” - doesn’t appear here.

that is a lot of turds

its not like most teams have all stars on the bench or waiting in the wings, but there is no depth on this team. im sick seeing of seeing the scrub team out there. how much do you want to bet omar had a conversation with julio franco before he officially retired? disgusting.

Jerry seems just like Willie

in terms of personality, both are very laid back. Nothing wrong with that but you have to wonder if this team doesn’t need more of a fiery manager.

New to the site

I’m a frequent poster at Metsblog and at BigBlueView (the Giants SBN blog), I’m surprised I’ve never been here before. Anyway, this was pretty interesting, I admit I was wondering who in the hell on the current team could have come out of our drafting Todd Hundley 20 years ago, was pleasantly surprised to see it was Wright. Hopefully in the new park he can put together a season to wipe Hundley out of the Mets record books for once and for all.

Omar's off-season contract strategy. (Get it?)
(Yes, I'm having too much fun with GraphJam)
I'm doing a little study on the NL East and thought I'd share an interesting little tidbit. To all of the self-loathing Mets fans/lazy 'MLB insiders' and journalistic parrots who have 1) Condemned the entire Mets organization as a joke 2) Written off this core's impressive run to date and 3) Deified the Phillies as unstoppable juggernauts w/ no chance to lose this division:

Yes, those wins are weighted towards '06-'07 and yes, the Phillies' are more recent but the fact remains that no other team in that span can even come close to the Mets total of days in first place, which should be garnering a lot more respect than it has. If only because we still have nearly the same core in place that has clearly had a lot of success and health-willing can very easily do so again in 2010.
