New Night,
New game. Let’s see how the Human Slot Machine works without the Jacket’s zen-like influence.

What?
Adult Diaper is hitting second?
by Catsmeat Potter-Pirbright on Jun 18, 2008 9:37 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Winning series is extremely important right now
It would be huge if we could steal 2 out of 3 from a quality team like the Angels.

Wow
Obie is so happy to be with the big club. Again, I’m glad he finally got a crack with the Mets; he’s toiled as a manager in the minors for a long time.

That was a nice talk.
But not as nice as Joe Smith’s ‘Hello Kitty’ backpack.

Nice start
Single, stolen base, advance to third on the throwing error. Let’s see if dumpy can get him in.

All right!
Now knock ‘em in, “Adult Diaper”.

Not deep enough.
Adult Diaper must have felt weighed down by his ‘Oops I Crapped My Pants’.

Very nice
A walk to a guy who’s 0 for his last 18. Glad I took the “over” on the swag form.

It's like having an extra lead-off hitter!
A very slow lead-off hitter!

He's that fast
Didn’t even break out of his trot until he was almost at second. Amazing.

also, he seems scrappy but not obnoxious. I don’t know, he can hit a bit, run a bit, plays all over the diamond, doesn’t seem like a jerk. He’s okay by me.

like, he doesn’t loaf, but he doesn’t sprint to first on a walk either. Plus he can hit the ball out of the infield I think

He also plays decent defense at a few different positions
And can take some walks, and has a little bit of pop

Slow night in here so far
So here’s a short story. When I was in Dublin last year I met Ron Darling’s ex-brother-in-law, Jerry something or other, in my hostel room. The guy seemed nice enough and told me about visiting spring training in the 1980s and meeting Doc, Straw, Keith, etc. We went our separate ways around 11 p.m.
I next saw the guy at 6 a.m. after he woke me up screeching about how bad he had to pee. I explained that someone else from the room was using the bathroom and he would have to wait. Jerry said he couldn’t wait. I told him there was nothing I could do. Jerry asked what I could do to help. I told him to pee in a wastebasket but otherwise to fuck off and let me sleep. Eventually the bathroom door opened and for some reason Jerry thanked me for it.
If I ever meet Ron Darling, I’m telling him this story and asking about this Jerry guy.

I can live with games like this where we only lose by one run. Granted, I’m not happy that we’re not scoring in the last 2/3 of the game – but at least it wasn’t a complete meltdown (so far) like some past games.

How we can right the ship...
After tonight, we’ll be 6.5 out of contention. Keep playing like this, it’ll end up 20, but 6.5 is not far off if we start playing well.
I still contend we can right the ship. As of right now, here’s what’s needed:
- Fire Carlos Delgado. He just has to go. He rarely gets on base. When he does, he clogs the bases. He offers nothing defensively. Let’s cut our losses and move on. We have to pay him anyway. Release him.
- Get Ryan Church back. A lot is said about Alou, but it seems like more of a long-shot to get him back healthy with leg injuries. Church just needs to get his head on straight. Concussions can be serious, but better than limb injuries. (For us anyway, not him.)
- Promote Fernando Martinez. He may not be ready, but the Mets need positive fan support. Let’s get Martinez up to the pros and learn here.
From there, rely on some real talent to get back in things. Hope for the best.

We hear the same ole “just missed it” every time. Even when he did hit that big homer last week, it was in the 13th. Where was he in the 9th and 11th?

it doesn't count if it's in the 13th.
It only counts in the 9th or the 11th. Or maybe the 17th, if the moon is full.

“Another sort of blah effort tonight, but the Mets’ have such an embarrassing roster that I’m kind of surprised they managed even three runs. I suppose we should also be thankful that the game was close at the end; considering all of the baserunners Oliver Perez allowed the game could very well have been out of this thing by the fifth inning.”

You should probably wait until his stats are updated to reflect tonight’s HR; his sample size is small enough that it should have a decent impact.

Nice win
Wright’s play to leadoff the inning was outstanding.
With him already directing his weight toward fist base for the throw, the ball started to curl away from him severely toward third, and DW was still able to snag and throw the ball in one movement. Outstanding.
