We’re all just little bundles of guarded optimism, aren’t we?

by anonymous on Jun 2, 2008 9:32 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

2-1 is the minimum acceptable

we have a guy that can’t throw strikes tonight and Zito tommorow.

by DoctorK16 on Jun 2, 2008 10:19 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Cain / Lincecum

Due to the fact that we have to deal w/one of them for the series, we’re not going to get all 3.

by LOUtheMETandNATSfan on Jun 2, 2008 10:21 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

apparently, we can't hit w/runners in scoring position

forgive me for my negative vibes, but dang…1st inning and we can’t drive ONE home?!

okay.

It’s getting close to time that we seek a more entertaining way to spend the remainder of the evening. Self-cutting, perhaps.

broadcast suckitude

I think this inning has been one of the worst I’ve heard on WFAN all season, so this is as good a time as any to complain about the WFAN broadcast team once more. I’m not exempting Howie Rose this time, either, though I detest Hagin so much he should take the balance of the blame. Perez’s breakdown would be a great time for a broadcaster to deploy some analysis—why has this happened, injury, psychology, just bad luck? what pitches was he throwing, which missed, which ones was he getting hurt on? But instead what we got, both from Rose and Hagin, was merely complaining, castigating Ollie for failing to “manage the inning” (meaningless bullshit), and a total absence of thought or even detailed description. Hagin just repeated over and over “how disappointing!” while Howie ranted about Perez’s need to “grow up.” Well, I think the WFAN team needs to grow up in a hurry here, and start providing a more thoughtful and content-rich broadcast.

by anonymous on Jun 2, 2008 10:49 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

that's part of the problem with not having a true

analyst in the booth. It would be nice if the hired a guy to sit next to Rose who was a player who could provide some.

by DoctorK16 on Jun 2, 2008 10:52 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

maybe, but I'm not sure that's the problem

Many, maybe even most, ex-ballplayer “analysts” just repeat contentless cliches and psychologize everything, too. The best of them have real insider’s insights into the game, for sure, but I think what’s called for is detailed description and analysis, and that just takes skillful observation and thought, not athletic talent.

by anonymous on Jun 2, 2008 11:00 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yeah but the best

of them ala Darling provide something that a guy who didn’t play can’t.

by itsmetsforme on Jun 2, 2008 11:22 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, it's tough to put that all one one guy

You’d like to hear Hagin give some good insight, but Howie has broadcast enough games, and seen and heard enough other broadcasts, that he’s got some responsibility to steer Hagin towards some useful analysis if he isn’t providing any. Good play-by-play announcers can be counted on to do that.

by JoshNY on Jun 2, 2008 10:59 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yes

All it would’ve taken was for Rose to say something like “Yes, Wayne, it is disappointing, but I wonder why this has happened. Is Perez injured, or have his mechanics gotten messed up somehow?” —and the whole inning would have been redirected in a more productive direction. I don’t know if Howie’s tired, or just frustrated in that moment like any passionate fan would be, but he really botched that inning badly.

Did it ever occur to anyone

that just maybe Howie is right and it is simply inexcusable and inexplicable what Perez has done not just tonight but basically the whole year. This is shaping into one of the worst seasons I have seen in a while for a well regarded pitcher who was in his walk year and looking for big money. He is costing himself millions and more important costing the Mets wins. All because he has a ten cent head at best. That trade with the Pirates looks less and less like a steal every day and more like a real problem.

by Endys Game on Jun 2, 2008 11:23 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i'm gonna have to agree with you today

except i woulnt go as high as 5 cents

I.M. Forme

by itsmetsforme on Jun 2, 2008 11:27 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

ten cents?

Can you put some analysis or evidence behind this “ten cent head” thing? Or even an explanation of what it means? Neither that nor Howie’s rant seem like explanations to me—it’s not enlightening or useful if we just call him dumb when he fails and smart when he succeeds.

by anonymous on Jun 2, 2008 11:27 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

he is dumb either way

no focus, all the talent in the world, cant learn to pitch

I.M. Forme

by itsmetsforme on Jun 2, 2008 11:29 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

need I point out the obvious?

Some very good pitchers are dumb as bricks.

by anonymous on Jun 2, 2008 11:35 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

do you have any hypotheses?

he has lapses of focus that sucessful pitchers do not have. if a butterfly or bunny bounded across the field, i get the idea he’d chase it. it’s “dumb” when you can’t focus enough to do the only thing you know how to do, the only thing that will put food on your family.

I.M. Forme

by itsmetsforme on Jun 2, 2008 11:41 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

is our children learning?

I am honestly a little baffled by Perez as a whole, too—he seems near-perfect some days and near-awful others, with more or less the same pitches. I don’t think I feel comfortable ascribing the variation in his performance to lack of focus or dumbness or whatever, just because it could be anything. I still think he’s a useful guy to have around, but it does seem like he’ll never rise to the potential we (and the scouts) keep thinking he has.

Tonight, specifically, I have no idea at all what happened.

by anonymous on Jun 2, 2008 11:45 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

fair enough but my response to the bafflement and frustration

is the working assumption that he is mentally not cut out to suceed. he certainly has the talent.
this helps me sleep better on nights like this.

Perez

Is it possible that he’s injured? He wasn’t walking people like he has in the past, he was throwing slow meatballs.

by DoctorK16 on Jun 2, 2008 11:31 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

this is my bet

I don’t think any of us know anything about why he failed yet, but my money’s on an injury of some kind, even maybe just a tight muscle that screwed up his delivery. He couldn’t get anything at all over the plate besides what seemed like batting-practice cookies. It didn’t look anything like Ollie’s usual failure modes.

by anonymous on Jun 2, 2008 11:34 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

oh brother, i heard the same comment a couple of days ago by buck martinez...i think

yesterday ron santo stated that Jim Edmonds was second only to Willie Mays in playing centerfield. A little too loose w/the comparisons I’d say.

by LOUtheMETandNATSfan on Jun 2, 2008 11:43 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

now that is patentially ridculous comment

by a guy who should be in the HOF IMO. Jim Edmonds was never even the best CF is era. Dude was overacted.

a lot of people believe that

if Mazorski and Ozzie Smith are in then it’s possible. It’s going to be interesting to see how it handled. I think the writers might put him as a repudiation to the steroid era.

I think its a joke that

the Giants are trying to white wash Bonds from their history. I’m ambivalent about him, but dude saved that franchise and helped them get that ballpark.

by DoctorK16 on Jun 2, 2008 11:46 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i get he was well compensated and all

but he was Giant baseball for much of 15 years. Give the guy his figurative Gold Watch. I’m not condoning his lying, roiding or his generally jerk behavior, but he deserves better from them IMO. They’d be playing in the Trop without him.

by DoctorK16 on Jun 2, 2008 11:49 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

but doesn't that cut both ways

the Giants and Peter McGowan made tons off Barry trips to Victor Conte. To wash their hands of the whole thing now seems like something a White House Press Secretary would do/.

i think the worst thing i saw during the whole escapade is when the commish saw bonds break the record and you could tell he wanted to smile…but he didn’t. he just looked dumb-struck. i think that look said it all.

I was inspired by Eric's comment that Olerud had the best 3-year run as a Met outside Carlos Beltran to look at a few different Mets, and when I noticed that two of my all-time favorite players (Alfonzo and Strawberry) were kinda screwed by having (relatively)bad seasons in between some really good seasons, I decided to see which Mets had the best 3 seasons, period (non-consecutively). Beltran still comes out on top, but my all-time favorite player Alfonzo comes in 2nd place, and him and Straw are the only two to have three 6.0+ WAR seasons. Also interesting that Hundley comes out ahead of Gary Carter, Cleon Jones almost finishes ahead of Mike Piazza, and Joe McEwing doesn't make the list.
