I agree, we could do worse
And as long as OMar or Bernazardare here, he will be a smart experienced “baseball guy” in the front office, it’s always nice to have a couple of them around.
The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

Good move
If old Freddie is smart, he will have Wayne at the helm by year’s end.

Caveat.
I caught an interview of the Reds’ announcer Brenneman on FAN the other day. He said that while Krivsky was very smart, he lacked people skills and eventually alienated almost everyone else in the front office and (needless to say) the media. Doesn’t sound like a good fit for a NY GM to me.

There are better people out there.
Krivsky’s performance as a GM is mediocre at best. The Kearns trade and Cordero signing are offset by the fact that he let some bad players walk and the early success of Volquez. His drafting ability will be evaluated in a few years. He probably deserved more time to turn around a bad organization. Why would anyone think the NY media would be more patient.
Let’s also not forget that Dusty Baker was hired on his watch. For his sake I hope that was an ownership decision. Otherwise…Yikes!

Kearns Trade
The Kearns trade turned out to be a winner for the Reds, Wagner never became anything, and Lopez and Kearns were never very good with the Nats.
Bray and Majewski are still in the Reds’ bullpen, and Darryl Thompson just made a great debut against the Yankees.

I'm not sure I agree
Majewski and Wagner’s awfulness offset each other. Lopez was a bad player in Cincy and has continued in DC. Bray has been serviceable and Thompson only has one start so who knows how that will turn out.
Kearns had a very good end of 2006 in DC and a decent year last year. This year he has been bad and hurt, but he is still only 28. Majewski was awful in Cincy in 2006 to the tune of a 2.26 WHIP and 8+ ERA. He has been bad since. It seems to me that this trade was the traditional trade deadline misread of a mediocre team that is in a pennant chase because of mediocre teams around them. (Think Kazmir) The specific point of the trade was to pay short term dividends. Since it didn’t, i think it has to be considered a failure even if it doesn’t come back to haunt the Reds down the road.

Krivsky question
How much did he have to do with stacking the Reds farm system with guys like Bruce, Votto, Cueto, and Bailey? I ask because the Mets desperately need to replenish the farm system, and Krivsky might just be the man to do it.
Krivsky certainly made some head-scratching trades as GM in Cincinnati, but his record of building the Reds farm system seems to be strong, so the guy might be just what the Mets need.

Sorry to disapoint
Bruce, Votto, and Bailey were all drafted prior to Krivsky. Cueto was signed as a FA prior to Krivsky. Krivsky oversaw the 2006 and 2007 drafts. Nobody from those drafts has made it to the Majors yet.
Dan O’Brien was responisble for Cueto, Bruce, and Bailey while Jim Bowden drafted Votto.

While that is true....
Krivsky also showed he had a pretty good eye for talent himself….getting several good years out of Bronson Arroyo for Wily Mo Pena, trading cash for Josh Hamilton in the Rule 5 Draft, who he later traded for Edinson Volquez, snatching Brandon Phillips for a PTBNL. He made alot of pretty good moves himself. I felt he was an underrated GM who was never really able to shed the Kearns trade label.

as a reds fan
I was actually pleased with Wayne. He did some confusing things, like giving Stanton a two year deal, giving Juan Castro a mid-year contract extension, trading for and extending Cormier, but he also brought in Arroyo, Hatteberg, Phillips, Ross, etc. He had a positive VORP if you compare the players he traded and released, compared to the players he acquired.
