Nice

It took 4 pitches for my swag form to be killed.

Damn, that was close. But a nice start nonetheless.

nice.

One batter, one swag contest question failed. Still nice to see Reyes doing what he does best.

I thought the game was at 7:05 (9:05 ET).

I went to do the swag at 6:05, and it was already closed. Damnit

Ignorance

I know some of y’all are slow. My beef is with his clutch hitting, not his overall numbers. Now, back to reality.

The 2008 NY Mets: Reyes singles. Castillo infield single. Wright walks. Beltran lines out. ZaBlanc bitches. Delgado strikes out. Reyes picked off third. Fans boo. Padres win 2-1.

Yeah, I do.

And it’s because some of us on the site take it personally and harshly when there is fair criticism of a Met player. The issue I identified with Beltran has been picked up by other sources, including some on this site. There’s not much critique that I’ve identified that hasn’t been picked up here as well. I have no eprsonal vendettas, I am a committed Mets fan

It’s unfortunate if there are those who feel that we can’t openly and honestly speak about our team here.

But, it’s worse when my words get bent around and then I get criticized for a viewpoint I never put forward.

Am I tough on Beltran? Yes. I expect more. But no one cheers more loudly for him when he’s at the plate than I. Just being honest.

as far as the question of the day goes. C-YA PEDRO. I love your attitude man but there is no way on God’s green earth that this guy is worth 10-12 million for the next 2-3 years. Asta la vista baby!

Wow

It seems that these stupid mistakes are happening to opponents more and us less.

Angels 2 Phillies 0

in the 7th. A win here and a cheesesteak loss would put us 3.5 back, 2 in the loss column. For all the commotion around this team, you would have thought they were 15 games out already

by Endys Game on Jun 21, 2008 8:33 PM EDT reply actions

And you would think the Phillies were running away with it

For all the praise they get from the media, they still have four mediocre starting pitchers.

Wayne Krivsky

He did a pretty good job as the Reds’ GM. It’s a good addition.

Wayne Krivsky

He’s had some good drafts as Reds GM. If I’m not mistaken (and I’m sure i will be corrected if I am) that he drafted Jay Bruce and the kid who just shut-out the Yankees in his debut.

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

by sireric on Jun 21, 2008 8:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Krivsky

Krivsky took over as Reds GM prior to the 2006 season. He didn’t draft Bruce. Bruce was drafted a year before. I don’t think any of his pick have it to the majors yet.

His success is hard to judge. He is responsible for acquiring Brandon Phillips and Edinson Volquez, but he is also responsible for trading Austin Kearns for Gary Majewski and signing Fransisco Cordero to an awful contract. To his credit he allowed Rich Aurillia and Scott Schoeneweis to walk and got picks in return.

FYI, Daryl Thompson who started today was drafted by…Our very own Omar Minaya

wtfbunting?

I don’t usually hold with all the bitching about Beltran dropping one down now and then, but Howie’s right here—this is Coors Field, swing away.

by anonymous on Jun 21, 2008 8:53 PM EDT reply actions

can someone tell me why the double steal is not used more often

you’ve got castillo on third, beltran on first.

send beltran (decent speed)...the moment the catcher shows the throw to second let castillo make a go at it!

is there any strategy left in today’s managers heads? gee-zus!

I don't hate

bunting as much as some of the others around here, but I thought the same thing swing the bat.

Of course if he had gotten the bunt down it would have been 2nd and 3rd and 1 out and Delgado’s grounder would have scored a run.

It's too bad the remaining interleauge series are at Shea

I would love to see if Manuel would have had the guts to DH for Schneider.

by Reg Dunlop on Jun 21, 2008 9:14 PM EDT reply actions

Why is the infield in?

It’s Colorado. You can make up four runs

by Reg Dunlop on Jun 21, 2008 9:27 PM EDT reply actions

Probably one of the worst plays in Baseball

I don’t understand why managers insist on bringing the infield in unless it is a potential game ending situation. If the IF is back Reyes has a good shot of catching that ball. Even if he doesn’t, the runner at second has to hold and it’s 5-1 with 1st and 3rd.

When the IF in play works it is usually due to luck. It’s just bad baseball.

Keep the Faith!

Last June, the Cubs erased an eight-run deficit to beat the Rockies 10-9 .. their biggest comeback since 1999 when they trailed the Rockies 9-1 at Coors Field and rallied for a 13-12 win. The Rockies are Chokies! Ya Gotta Believe!

by citislicker on Jun 21, 2008 10:21 PM EDT reply actions

Indeed

The Rox bullpen has the propensity to tank it in these situations. However, with the Mets unable to score a guy from 3rd with less than 2 outs in the 8th, the odds are slim they can put up 6 here. Go get em tomorrow!

The 2008 NY Mets: Reyes singles. Castillo infield single. Wright walks. Beltran lines out. ZaBlanc bitches. Delgado strikes out. Reyes picked off third. Fans boo. Padres win 2-1.

by ZaBlanc on Jun 21, 2008 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions

What bothers me about tonight's game.

What will bother me about this loss tonight is not just that we lost. It’s those last two innings. In the 8th, with a runner on 3rd with 1 out, the Mets failed to score him. And especially the 9th, with the BASES LOADED and none out, the Mets managed to not score a thing, and there wasn’t even a double play.

That reminds me of the Mets losing baseball, not the much sharper play we’ve seen the last two nights.

Hmmm, hope they get back to it tomorrow.

And to think I'd stay in on Saturday night ...

and still get blue-balls! Pathetic 9th inning – ZERO runs with 3 on and none out? All up to Big Pelf to salvage this series .. see you all tomorrow. And I’m a newbie here, so welcome me dammit.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

(click to embiggen)
Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
