A Win

I missed this whole game because I was out eating belgian blue burgers and drinking adult beverages at the local food-and-adult-beverage establishment. Hey, lookie here, the Mets scored some runs! And if that weren't enough, they allowed even fewer runs! A win, I tells ya! Judging by the paucity of comments in the game thread I'm guessing not too many of you saw the game, either.

Very well, SECRET SWAG CONTEST time. The best 500-words-or-less recap wins; a DVD or a book or something. Just leave 'em in the comments.

last night

Games like that remind me that as much as I hate this current incarnation of the Mets, at least we’ll still have David Wright, Jose Reyes, and John Maine for a while. There are worse players we could be rebuilding around.

Secret Swag Recap?

The Mets won 8 to 2 and I didn’t even bother trying to follow this game on MLB.com or ESPN.com because both versions of their gamecast are flashtastic memory hogs and I have an ancient computer at home that chokes on them…and I left my nice laptop at work. Regardless, this team starts a little winning streak and reels me back in, then loses a couple to another crappy team and I lose a lot of interest. Wright with 2 homeruns, Reyes with 1 homerun. If I spent more time writing my master’s thesis or looking at strippers, it would be time better spent. I am shocked that more people have not jumped all over secret swag and written something much cooler than this especially since I am hardly awake yet.

I don't think so

Mets apathy has reached a season low point.

nope

New girlfriends have ways of distracting one from the Mets suckitude (which is a good thing).

Sappy Recap!

The start of last nights game recalls a time when men wore fedoras and smoked openly in the stands. A Reyes walk, a steal, a wild pitch, an RBI ground out, 1-0. Ah small ball! We love you so much!!! But then selfishness took over. David Wright hit a selfish solo home run to give the Mets a 2-0 lead. (Way to only drive in one run DW) And then, as if that weren’t selfish enough, he a two run home in his second at bat to make it 4-0. (Couldn’t he have at least waited until a clutchier time to selfishly hit a home run?) After an Anderson Sac fly RBI in the 3rd, (thank god for productive outs) Jose Reyes brought selfishness to a new level by hitting an unclutch 3 run homer to make it 8-0. When will these players learn that it ’s the “little things” that win games!!!

John Maine gave up 2 ER, 5H 2 BB and 3 K in his usual six inning 100 pitch performance before he was taken out. (Bob Gibson never came out after six innings! He used to throw 188 pitches in a game!) The bullpen performed well in the unclutchiest of situations.

I watched the game

I was there. It was an old-fashioned Mets romp, even though the bats quieted down after the first few innings. It was a fast game, too. I was nearing Manhattan on the 7 train around 10, which was great.

Too damn busy at work today to recap it, even though there is Swag Potential. I promise a full report on all three games against the Skanks this weekend.

It says something about the state of our season

when Hacksaw Jim Duggan is the Aftermath lol.

The butcher and the baker and the people on the street, where did they go? To meet the Mets!

Recap

Rime of the Ancient (Seattle) Mariner

As the Mets looked to salvage their series and avoid a sweep
I went to Shea expecting to see their bats fast asleep;
But lo! I was in for a most marvelous surprise
A first-inning home-run! (I leapt and dropped my fries!)

David Wright hit a bomb on a pitch from Seattle’s Batista
Just after Reyes and Castillo small-balled in a run;
Anderson and Schneider failed with the bases juiced
But the Mets were up two-zero after one.

Inning two featured another offensive burst
Mr. Castillo reached base on a bunt;
Again D. Wright homered to make it four-nil
A brat knocked over my beer in celebration (That little runt!)

John Maine breezed through the first four frames
Like a summer wind through Peterson’s hair:
In the third inning Anderson sacrificed for another run
And Reyes’ long-ball drove in him and a pair.

By the time the Mariners threatened in the fifth
Maine and the Mets had an eight-run lead;
Ichiro then plated Sexson with a pop-fly
After Bloomquist singled in Jeff Reed.

That’s all John would give up Wednesday night
Heilman, Smith and Sanchez went on to close it out;
Maine was Wright on and Wright the Maine man
Only thing awry at Shea was $8 for a Guiness Stout!

But enough with this poem
I must let the cat out the bag;
I only wrote this recap
To score some sweet swag!
