Willets Point Vote Tonight
If you are going to be in or around the Flushing area tonight and you are in favor of the plan to transform Willets Point into an area worth visiting instead of an environmentally unsound morass of run-down chop-shoppery, the Queens Community Board 7 will be meeting tonight to vote on the redevelopment effort. The public is invited to attend and speak either in favor or opposition of the plan, so if you care strongly one way or another I encourage you to go.
The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Union Plaza Nursing Home, 33-23 Union St. in Flushing. You can read more about the development effort at Chris McShane's Develop Willets Point.

this should be a no brainer for everyone
but i bet there will be huge resistance from the current landowners and tenants. not because they city will try and screw them over. for the current landowners, all they have to do is open their books to an independent arbiter and then get a huge payday to move thier ‘business’ elsewhere. unfortunately since im assuming so much of this ‘business’ is over the books or just plain illegal they’ll be fighting for ‘fair’ value throughout the whole thing.
worst thing the city can do is try and ram the redevelopment down their throats without due process.

What do you mean “all they have to do is open their books to an independent arbiter and then get a huge payday to move thier ‘business’ elsewhere. ”? Maybe you shouldn’t assume so much- probably some is illegal but I don’t think most of it is. It seems to me the larger business/property owners run respectable family businesses that have been there for generations. I think all should be treated fairly. If there is illegal activity, isn’t that what law enforcement is for?
