MLB Draft

(Promoted to front page; use as open thread for draft. --eric)

Big chance for the Mets to restock at Thursday's MLB Draft.  The new economics of baseball has made the draft more important to the franchises, and created greater fan interest.  This year it will have its most expansive television coverage ever.  It can be seen on ESPN 2 from 2-6PM.

I've never personally ever seen any of these players we hear the Mets associated with, but like many of you I've read scouting reports and analysis.  I've heard a lot about Ike Davis lately, but to me it seems we have a guy like that in Mike Carp.  Not to mention Martinez, and Murphy as fairly advanced lefty hitters, and Evans who plays a corner.  I'd rather take Gerrit Cole, the high school pitcher who might fall.  All the best groomed starters are HS guys, and not college guys where people don't pitch to contact (which was actually discussed on a game thread here lately).  I think if we have a chance to get a Billingsly, Kershaw, etc sort of player we should take it.  I like the idea of going with Castro, the catcher from Stanford with the other top 2 pick.  He'll be a great fit by 2010.  From what I read, I don't like Weeks the 2B from Miami the Mets may be looking at.  The next pick seems it like it hinges on what they grab with the first 2, so it's hard for me to venture a guess.  I just hope we have a chance to get Cutter Dykstra at some point, though not as a reach.  He seems like a solid center fielder type like his Dad, and that is a useful MLB player.

Enjoy the draft.  Big Day for Omar.  Let's go METS!

Hmm

I want Jemile Weeks badly and his stock is falling. We might be able to snag him with our 2nd pick in the 1st round but I don’t think the Mets want to take him.

Predictions on how many of tomorrow's Mets headlines will feature Eisenhower campaign slogans?

Mets take college bat Ike Davis with their first pick, as expected. Will be nice to see him develop, and maybe he’ll be of use before too long.

I know nothing

I know absolutely nothing about the players in the draft. However, I do know that I feel like “Ike Davis” and “Reese Havens” have the potential to be good baseball names, and that makes me feel okay, superficially.

Surprising stuff

started with Alonso going to the Reds at 7, and the Castro at 10 was a stupid pick, and crazily Smoak fell to 11. I’m glad we didn’t take Weeks.

Davis and Havens…Davis is like Carp, it’s true, but you still can draft for best player, and he’s a good hitter. Havens could be up fast enough to warrant the DFA of Castillo in the next couple years, I hope.

Shadow Draft: I took Freidrich (who just went to the Rockies at 25) at 18 and Anthony Hewitt at 22 (who then went to the Phillies at 24). Hewitt was my favorite player in the draft: drawing Bo Jackson comps for his speed, power, and arm (even some 80s out of 80s on the scale for that), and is the best athlete in the draft. His baseball skills, though…suck. So he’s a crapshoot. We took much safer, but probably better picks.

When asked why I was a Mets fan, I responded, "pain is my lifeblood."

draft signifigance

i find it hard to put much stock in the BASEBALL draft. it’s so hard to gauge how the draftees will do because of their having to toil in the minors. unlike basketball and football, you can’t see the immediate impact of a baseball draftee. unless you really have time to dedicate yourself to watching/paying attention to minor league ball, i find it hard to really get my hands around all of the draft interest. i thought i was a good fan of baseball. guess i’m just a casual fan

I guess I have enough time.

I mean, I do. And just because you’re not minors obsessed doesn’t make you casual. I’m just in a keeper league with 14 teams, 25 starters and 25 friggin reserves…so I’m taking B- level prospects in A+ ball. I know a lot of players. Just makes me a total geek and nerd.

Just took Tim Melville with that pick at 33.
