sleepy

This late starting is completely unacceptable. If people are foolish enough to live on the wrong side of the country, that’s their problem. Besides, it’s my understanding that everyone on the left coast is a musician, an entertainer, or an unemployable Singles-style slacker. They could start this game at 8 PM regular time and the coffee shops would just have to show the game.

have you stepped out of your box?

look, buy some suntan lotion, a pair of sandles and some shades and chill out. it’s beautiful out there man…or gal…

what is it out here on the east coast that you can’t turn right on red?

totally agree

If those wealthy entertainment moguls have to listen to the game on the radio in their cars while they’re stuck in three-hour traffic jams, that’s not my problem.

oh, dear lord.

MLB.com’s t.v. edition … i’ve got to listen to Tony Gwinn? hell of a hitter but a nasaly voice

really?

IMHO, Tony Gwynn is one of the smartest and most fun ex-ballplayers to listen to. I think my dream ex-player broadcast team (in a few years from now) would be him and Pedro Martinez.

that would be a hell of a combination. tony knows his stuff, but his voice aint made for radio

but you’re right, for accuracy’s sake, I should’ve said Pelfrey wished he were pitching in Groucho glasses.

anyone notice this move by the batters

left handers going away from the ball as they swing. i can’t tell if it’s to try and take advantage of momentum to go towards first or what?

In general, it’s probably nice not to dump too many pictures into the game threads, anyway (this means you, fat cat posters).

What you want to put inside the “img src=” tag is the URL of the picture itself, not the URL of the wrapper page. There’s even a little button up above the comment text area that wraps the picture URL in an img tag for you (the little tree thing).

by anonymous on Jun 5, 2008 10:44 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, i see the tree. hmm. i saw the prompt too.

but if i’m on the page w/the pic, where do i get the link for the pic and NOT the page?

Regarding the poll about the draft...

My answer, personally, is “I have no idea.”

by JoshNY on Jun 5, 2008 10:44 PM EDT reply actions

mine too

I voted for “Yay” solely because some of the draft analysis I saw said that Reese Havens (sounds like a peanut-butter-cup theme park) was a good pick. I haven’t got a clue how this stuff turns out until the players have a few years under their belts.

by anonymous on Jun 5, 2008 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions

totally

i voted for “meh” because i had no idea what it meant.

a baseball draft just can’t grab my attention because the prospects normally don’t make an immediate impact on the team

although i’d prefer if avoided the drama in the first place

The best part here is the dude to Kevin's right

Who’s sitting there like “should I be moving out of this shot? am I on TV in New York?”

by JoshNY on Jun 5, 2008 11:27 PM EDT reply actions

wow.

Pelfrey continues to do just enough, aided by a few sharp plays from Reyes. How many runners can Kouzmanoff strand on base before he gets lucky once? By rights, the Padres ought to have four or five runs in this game.

by anonymous on Jun 5, 2008 11:43 PM EDT reply actions

i wish the offense would take advantage of this luck

but with banks only having thrown 63 pitchers so far, it seems like the offense will be moribund for another two innings or so. what’s with the mets and young pitchers they’ve never seen before…this goes back to 2006

by englishgrey on Jun 5, 2008 11:47 PM EDT reply actions

Seriously

These young pitchers seem to pitch lights out against the Mets

by Lou619 on Jun 5, 2008 11:49 PM EDT up reply actions

funny you should post this now

just as the Mets broke through to a totally undeserved tie. I found Banks’s baffling them totally predictable up to now; he’ll probably still pitch a complete game and win 2-1.

So, nobody remembers that Bell was terrible for the Mets?

ERA over 5 the last two seasons. As I recall, we couldn’t wait to get rid of him.

by JoshNY on Jun 6, 2008 12:17 AM EDT reply actions

Not me

I recognize his lackluster performance at the big league level, but I never stopped being a supporter. Even with the Mets his peripherals were terrific.

by Eric Simon on Jun 6, 2008 12:20 AM EDT up reply actions

what do you mean we, white man?

You’re talking to the largest group of Heath’s supporters outside the Bell family here. People were talking about getting “FREE HEATH BELL” tee-shirts made, for crap’s sake.

by anonymous on Jun 6, 2008 12:24 AM EDT up reply actions

OK, fair enough

I wasn’t reading this site at that point so I was not aware of that

He kept getting

sent down, they didnt give him a shot

by Lou619 on Jun 6, 2008 12:18 AM EDT reply actions

maybe...

he was ineffective because he knew he’d get sent down right away unless he was lights out

by englishgrey on Jun 6, 2008 12:21 AM EDT up reply actions

true

but i’m just trying to come up with a reason why he sucked with the mets but then rocked out with the padres…

by englishgrey on Jun 6, 2008 12:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Well

Again, his peripherals (strikeout and walk rates, specifically) were very good with the Mets. He gave up a lot of hits, but sometimes that’s just bad luck. San Diego is a much better place to pitch than Shea, but I suspect he relaxed a bit and some of the balls starting bouncing his way.

... from the department of people I didn’t know were on my team.

by anonymous on Jun 6, 2008 12:31 AM EDT up reply actions

They gave him #6?

Melvin Mora and Timo Perez are offended that their legacies have been tarnished thusly.

by JoshNY on Jun 6, 2008 12:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Timo Perez gets a legacy?

Some sort of prize for spinning entirely around when you swing at a pitch in the dirt?

by anonymous on Jun 6, 2008 12:32 AM EDT up reply actions

From the "things I was not aware of" department:

Timo hit .389/.427/.533 in 29 games for the Tigers last year.

by JoshNY on Jun 6, 2008 12:34 AM EDT up reply actions

wow

Yeah, I knew he was playing for them, but I just assumed it was mostly as a defensive replacement. Had no idea he was hitting, much less hitting that well even in a small sample (to be fair, only 90 AB).

by anonymous on Jun 6, 2008 12:36 AM EDT up reply actions

And

In 2003 he tied for 2nd in the NL with 9 sacrifice flies

by JoshNY on Jun 6, 2008 12:36 AM EDT up reply actions

He was always a bit doughy

He lost some weight one spring by rollerblading to and from the Port St. Lucie complex. I think he’s added a bit back on, though.

by Eric Simon on Jun 6, 2008 12:34 AM EDT up reply actions

EAMUS METROPOLI!

by pingel on Jun 6, 2008 12:45 AM EDT reply actions

That's a LOT of hits to only score one run

If I were a Padres fan, I would be REALLY pissed off if they lost this game

by JoshNY on Jun 6, 2008 12:47 AM EDT reply actions

for goodness' sake, somebody score a run

Between the ballpark and the Mets’ finding the only other team as offensively challenged as they are, this one could go 1-1 all night.

by anonymous on Jun 6, 2008 12:48 AM EDT reply actions

Knowing these teams...

One of them will discover a way to lose a run that has already been scored and lose the game 1-0.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

(click to embiggen)
Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
