What's the Point of All This?

Some things I did today that didn't make me want to kill myself:
- Ate some leftover Indian food
- Picked up a prescription at CVS
- Watched an awesome new Mets DVD
- Took a nap
- Talked to buddy on the phone
Notice anything missing?
Time to drink.

Eric...I can't stop laughing
Man, God bless you. I think every fan truly needed some comic relief after watching the implosion that was Mets, relief pitching.
But more importanly distressing was getting swept by the Padres.
I don’t know what is harder to take, this, or the possibility that the price of oil per barrel may reach $150 by the end of the summer.
Where can I go to read post game comments from players and the manager? I’m so damned curious on what, if anything Willie and Wagner had to say about the 4 day performance.
I’m currently on 24 hour missle watch and the only thing I can drink is water and decaffeinated coffee. If I were allowed alcohol, I met do something stupid like release on the of the Minuteman II missles toward Omar Minaya’s home.

How does a professional athelete oversleep and how can his teammates not help each other out?
I know it’s the pros and the guys should get their own rooms, but I always always under the impression that each player had a roommate and they looked after one another. If not, well, now maybe the METS have a reason to change. Also, I’m assuming that the METS were staying at the OMNI downtown. It’s one of the newest and most plush hotels in the area (good enough for our underachieving METS) and it’s built…RIGHT BESIDE THE F-ING BALLBARK!!!! Literally, the OMNI and PETCO are attached by a walking bridge that takes six seconds to get across!! So if the METS played there, there is no reason what-so-F-ING-ever for the guy to be late!

lost in a fog
Yes, I have stayed there…only an asshole could oversleep and miss the game. Whatever happened to wakeup calls? Apparently, Castro spent a little time on 5th avenue too late.

FIRE WILLIE!
Nah, that’s not really what I’m feeling this morning, but I suppose I might as well get it out of the way.
I figured putting up a three-spot would have guaranteed a win yesterday, but I guess not. Curse you, San Diego. Go fuck yourselves.

something's gotta give
You can’t fire the players (well, I could deal with it if they fired Castillo), but at some point someone is going to answer for the team’s underperformance. And that someone will be Willie.
Of course, it may just be that this is a .500 ballclub, in which case Omar will get canned as soon as the season is over.

Oh, no doubt
I am sure we can all agree that there are people clamoring for Willie’s head after this weekend, but I cannot lay the blame on him for this weird, weird weekend. Who do you fire when bases are getting loaded but no one is able to even slap a dang single to knock those runners in? HoJo? Scott Hairston (man that was a sick catch on Friday night)?
I guess Eric’s post title really sums it up for me—there does not appear to be anything to learn from this weekend other than this Mets team really has no identity.

you nailed it
No identity.
It sounds corny to say, but I think the 2006 team would have found a way to win at least three of those games, if not all of them (the one-run games especially).
The 2006 squad had balance. On any given day, the 2008 team has at most three hitters in the lineup, and those three never seem to be hitting at the same time. It’s frustrating as hell.

Wait a second...
The Mets have ANOTHER West Coast trip next week? What the fuck, schedule-makers? 20 days without an off day including two SEPARATE trips out west, then another one after six games at home? You’ve gotta be able to do better than this.

Good point
But does it really matter where they play? This season has all the earmarks of a meltdown both on and off the field. Combine horrible luck with bad play. The thing is and not to sound like I am beating a dead horse, but while I am depressed and sad about the team’s play, I am angry and outraged about the Ryan Church fiasco. It’s things like that that make the Mets look like not just a baseball team having a bad year but an organization that rivals say the Knicks for competence and/or class.

Does it matter where they play?
Honestly, I don’t know. I think the effects of teams’ home parks are largely exaggerated. If you play poorly, you’ll lose no matter where the game is. But going a long period of time without an off day is bound to wear players out. Flying across the country frequently is tiring – you can’t rest well on a plane (even on a ritzy team charter with big comfy seats and everything) because the air is dry and the amount of time you spend in one spot isn’t conducive to a lot of sleep, and your sleep schedule gets thrown out of whack by time changes. If the players have looked lethargic (as has been observed), I think actual physical fatigue is a more realistic explanation for it than “they don’t care about winning” or “Willie isn’t firing them up” or something. I mean, I get tired towards the end of west coast night games, and I’m not even PLAYING.

This team is old
A lot of the players have hit some bad luck, but Omar should have expected a certain amount of decline and injuries. How could he build a team without a suitable replacement for Alou and/or Delgado? Did he really expect Pedro and El Duque to stay healthy all season long? And I don’t even want to started on that awful contract he gave Castillo. I’m no fan of Willie’s, but Omar has to take a lot of the blame here.

It's The Chance One Takes....
when building a team with veteran players. This could’ve worked out better for the Mets, too, but it didn’t, at this point. This season is not nearly over, yet, but I agree it does look shaky for the Mets. One wonders what trades they can and will be able to make. What’s down on the farm they can use to trade? To me, it looks like they’ll have to go with the devil(s) they know—unless something falls in their lap. The poor play is the fault of the team—there are plenty of places to point fingers, and there are plenty of fingers on the hands of Mets’ fans. I can guess which finger many of the fans want to use right now.

Willie should have been fired today
an off day. Perfect time for bad news…or good news…however you look at it.
He is a textbook manager. Never varies from the script. Yesterday, required variation. He decides to go with Wagner for four outs….why not let Duaner finish the inning? Oh no, the book says, make the switch.
KABLAMMM…fucked by a fossil that used to play for us. I am sorry, WILLIE MUST GO!
