Joe Blanton traded to the Phillies
Report is that Joe Blanton has been traded by the As to the Phillies in exchange for three prospects, Cardenas, Outman and Spencer.
Surprising to see a move this soon, but Beane was flat out ready to rid of Blanton as quickly as possible.
I was hoping the Phillies would have had to part with Carrasco but doesn't seem like it.
Will keep you guys updated.
It's official, Cardenas Outman and Spencer for Blanton. Beerleaguers do not seem happy.

They never are.
Being from Philly as they are, they see the downside of every deal. Then factor in the tendency of avid fans to overrate their team’s own prospects (we’re guilty of the same here). These guys seem more like suspects than prospects, but on the other hand I think Blanton’s overrated and has been genuinely awful this year. But I’m sure he’ll love pitching in that bandbox.

Well
some people believe that Cardenas, not Carrasco was the top prospect in the Phillies organization. Some say Cardenas can play second, others don’t agree and say he’ll end up at third or CF, but regardless his bat is amazing.
I’m not sure what to tell anyone, I just don’t think it is as cut and dry as people realize…
The Phillies fans have watched the Cubs get Harden for not that much and still see Bedard on the market. I think they’re a little perturbed because they thought that if any move was going to be made involving the sacrifice of prospects, that it would also involve someone that didn’t suck.
Looking at Blanton’s last full season of starts (second half of 2007 and first half of 2008) he looks absolutely horrid. Maybe he could turn it around, but the stats say otherwise.
But we all know how baseball goes. A guy could be 0 for 300 against a guy and hit a home run the 301st time. Stats give you an idea of what might happen but they aren’t an absolute indicator.
Blanton has an ERA around 4.94 including the second half and first half. He’s been an incredibly different pitcher since the end of the first half of 2007, he ended that with a sparkling 2.69 ERA.
Maybe the Phillies are hoping it was poor luck…but the BABIP is hovering slightly over .300 so it’s not so much bad luck as they were hoping. It’s not the worst move in the world and Blanton might turn it around, hell Rudy Seanez and JC Romero look competent this season so who the hell knows what’s going on this season.

Good points
Seems like Blanton main comparable for the Phillies should be Lieber, 6’3’’, fat, white*, control/fly ball pitcher. It could work out for the Phils ala Lieber in 2005 or not ala Leiber in 2006 and 2007. Overall, the move doesn’t really scare me as the upside is pretty low while the downside is huge.
