Endy Hitting Second

drives me crazy. Why is it a common practice for MLB managers to hit the worst hitter in the lineup second?

by Shomov on Jul 19, 2008 7:14 PM EDT reply actions

Because

If, for some reason, he happens to get on base, he has good speed.

Running Fast

doesn’t justify hitting him second. You want to bunch your good hitters together. Additionally, since the second hitter is likely to get one more at bat than someone hitting down in the order, you should give that extra at bat to someone who is likely to do something with it..

by Shomov on Jul 19, 2008 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I know

I was being sarcastic. It really is baffling why Endy and Marlon keep being put there. Why not Tatis or Easley?

My Bad

I realize that my post came across as pedantic.

Not a problem

Sarcasm is untraceable on the Internet.

Phillies

SNY just referred to Uggla as the AL MVP of the All Star game.

Phillies Lose

should have been the title of the previous post.

by Shomov on Jul 19, 2008 7:18 PM EDT up reply actions

That is ridiculous

Let’s get the game going, for God’s sake.

I agree.

This is so stupid. Isn’t this why they started the game later anyhow?

Yup

But Larkin just couldn’t stop talking, I guess.

Larkin

turned down a trade to the Mets in the middle of the 2000 season

by Shomov on Jul 19, 2008 7:46 PM EDT reply actions

yeah and Phillips went out and got Bordick

For Melvin Mora instead. An underrated shitty trade.

by DoctorK16 on Jul 19, 2008 7:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep

I’m not sure why that trade does not get more press as a really bad deadline deal.

by Shomov on Jul 19, 2008 7:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Phillips made that trade

and Abbot ended up starting the final game of the World Series; I am sure that wasn’t what he envisioned.

by Shomov on Jul 19, 2008 8:02 PM EDT up reply actions

and Bordick catches my ire

for not being able to make a play on the Sojo ball.

by DoctorK16 on Jul 19, 2008 8:04 PM EDT up reply actions

He homered

in his first at bat as a Met and I was fooled into thinking that he would be useful.

Where’s Castro? I’m going to make this my cause for the rest of the year. Free Castro.

I keep wondering whether he's hurt or not

Apparently Jerry is afraid of him, too.

And Beltran makes players throw the ball away with his grit and intangibles.

Who would be shocked if we've seen

the last of Ryan Church for 2008. I wouldn’t be at this point.

by DoctorK16 on Jul 19, 2008 8:45 PM EDT reply actions

it would suck

but it wouldn’t surprise me either.

Also, Beltran sucks. Real clutch hitters find a way to not hit their 4th inning screaming line drives right at the first baseman.

Who's fault is that?

The 2008 NY Mets: Reyes singles. Castillo infield single. Wright walks. Beltran lines out. ZaBlanc bitches. Delgado strikes out. Reyes picked off third. Fans boo. Padres win 2-1.

Here's my proposal:

Trade him to the Yankees for Melky and cash considerations. Maybe the Melkman can get a hit with 2 outs.

this game sucks

after that inspiring first game come back, i really expected something out of this team. instead they seem to have reverted to being Willie’s wankers. Mediocre pitching, butcherboy fielding and anticlutch hitting. Argenis and Fernando can’t do it by themselves!

i just want to say to all the Heilman apologists

i don’t care if he is a second half pitcher, i tired of him long ago (in st louis playoffs) and won’t shed any tears when he takes his penchant for pivotal suckiness to go be a mediocre starter on some other team. I don’t know if there really are any Heilman lovers, but I just want to vent.

yes they can

they have a stable of vacation guys to fill in for them. It makes sense, their people too, and while they get paid well they don’t have a stable assistants to help them players and they do have lives to attend to. Plus the travel is brutal and they don’t get built in off days like players.

by DoctorK16 on Jul 19, 2008 10:31 PM EDT up reply actions

plus baseball is every day

the other sports get days off by virtue of the fact they don’t play every day. An NBA official might work 4 games a week and NFL official works 1 game a week.

I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
In order to raise extra capital, the Mets have explored signing Kosuke Fukudome to a minor league contract with an invitation to Spring Training (replete with curiously high uniform number).
