Just heard about Pedro's father's death
He won’t be starting tomorrow. Obviously he should take as much time as he needs.

Rollins a late scratch?
I’ll take an Eric Bruntlett ground out to lead off the game.

I was positive it was gonna happen today
There ya go, Ollie.

133 strikeouts for you, Ryan Howard.
We should make a pool for what date he’ll notch 200.
We've got ourselves a ball club, the Mets of New York town!
Here are my two questions
1. Why does Jerry insist on having somebody crappy hit second?
2. Why does Jerry insist on hitting Castro eighth when he’s in the lineup? It’s like he’s decided the catcher always needs to hit in the same spot, and because Schneider is a crappy hitter that spot has to be eighth.
With this group of guys playing, the lineup should be Reyes, Wright, Beltran, Castro, Delgado, Tatis, Easley, Evans, Perez.
Because he thinks the same way as Willie, unfortunately

I'm with you on that.

I mean...
This isn’t rocket science I’m talking about here. I’m not using some sort of crazy advanced statistic that Joe Morgan would make fun of. Castro has the highest SLG% on the team. If you want to use him sparingly because “his durability is a concern” or “Schneider handles pitchers better” that’s one thing, but when he IS in the lineup, why not put him somewhere that he can do some damage?
2 slot
counldnt agree. its criminal how poorly our second batters have been at getting on base. filling out the line up order is seriously not that hard.
would you rather
see beltran hitting two? and stick evans in the 8 hole? the guy hasn’t established himself as a hitter yet and beltran’s career numbers in the 2-hole - if i remember correctly - are remarkable. castro hitting 8th is equally inane.
hell yeah
beltran instead of evans in the 2 hole is a no brainer. pretty much anybody but evans in the two slot is preferable. evans, as the worst hitter in that line up, should be bating 8th, or maybe even 9th. hopefully he will improve but right now there no excuse for batting him 2nd.
Moyer is amazing, isn't he.
He is old, crafty, and the umpires respect him enough to make the strikezone extra wide.
Or, at least that’s what Wayne and Howie are telling me.
It would be better if they stopped fawning over the elderly Philly and complained about Nick Evans batting 2nd.
Anyone watching the game?
Three backwards K’s for Moyer in the first five hitters, is he actually getting an overly generous strike zone?
Howie just said...
“it’s not like the Moises Alou school of hand moisturizing.” when discussing why Moyer does not use batting gloves.
Get well soon, Pee Hands!
Ollie is looking great
But of course, here comes Pat the Bat.

relatively efficient
42 pitches through three innings, 29 for strikes. At that rate he could go eight.

Alright!
Baseball Jesus gets the ribby after Wayne said he’s been having trouble driving in runners. Good work.
1-0!

you see Sabathia threw another CG shutout?
That’s three on the season. He has five complete games (two are of the non-shutout variety).
That’s keeping it real.

waking up at 9:30am only to realize i’ve missed the first inning of a mets game? priceless.
just getting in gang.
what is the big deal w/the bat between moyer and delgado?
delgado…you should have walked the bat to him or the bat boy.
moyer, shut the hell up! the mets don’t like you, you don’t like the mets. get over it and play ball.
NEXT!

how about some runs????
The Mets blew a good start by Johan 2 nights ago. They’d better not blow a great start by Ollie. Get him some runs!!!
Vote change: DePodesta/Acta in 2009!!!
Man, the Mets are not making fucking Moyer work at all
He has thrown fewer pitches than Ollie at this point.
We've got ourselves a ball club, the Mets of New York town!
Delgado, missed bunt on the second pitch?
I guess he was trying to put it up the thirdbase line?

hey Moyer next time
don’t throw your bat! Old bastard, what are you going to do? Chew Carlos’ kneecaps off?

I’ve been sitting in the rain watching the Rochester Red Wings and Toledo Mud Hens. It seems that good Ollie showed up today?

Haha
But he’s Ollie, so you know he’s gonna revert to inconsistency for a while again. Then start dominating again, prompting this very argument again…
It’s a vicious cycle.

a fastball that tops out at 81 and the Mets can't rake off this guy?
Come on, Mets. This should be batting practice.
We've got ourselves a ball club, the Mets of New York town!
Exactly
I wonder why this team has so much trouble with a soft-tossing 95-year-old man.
by Catsmeat Potter-Pirbright on Jul 24, 2008 1:52 PM EDT up reply actions
why do they call pitchers like moyer "cagey"
he’s a junkballer. plain and simple. how he ever wins a ballgame is beyond comprehension.
How is Moyer getting so many popups?
The butcher and the baker and the people on the street, where did they go? To meet the Mets!
by Rod Gaspar Fan Club on Jul 24, 2008 1:53 PM EDT reply actions
it might have something to do with the fact that
his changeup is 2-3 miles per hour slower than his fastball, I dunno.

by kingcritical on Jul 24, 2008 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions
one thing i'm noticing is how far the mets right handed batters
are standing towards the outside part of the batters box and moyer is painting the outside part of the plate. so the batters are hardly getting any good wood on it.
pop out to second then a pop to right field. not much wood or pop on the ball

No argument there
But he seems like an odd choice for a pinch-hitting specialist. As long as it keeps working, though . . .
by Catsmeat Potter-Pirbright on Jul 24, 2008 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions
true
but cancel is pretty much the worst hitter we’ve got. maybe marlon anderson at this point. i think it was a horseshit call. cancel is the 3rd strong back up, to use if youve already used castro, or even schnieder, as a PH in these situations. pretty egregious. manual basically sucks.
was he going for the hit?
Otherwise it’s obscenely stupid to take the bat out of the hands of one of your best hitters (who isn’t a DP threat) to let a 4th OF hit.

sac bunt by reyes is also horshit
chavez, who blows, is next. reyes is a much better hitter. also look at the run expectancy matrix.

were now LESS likely to score that run. when can we fire manual?
Not until November

I wish that was my last name
Delgado-Romero would be cool. Something like Angel Delgado-Romero, Race Car Driver!
You would be faster
The name alone adds about 70 mph.
by Catsmeat Potter-Pirbright on Jul 24, 2008 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions
Maybe
Having D hit fourth is genius. He’s all gotta make up for the notably un-clutch Carlos B hitting behind him. Cos Carlos B? No clutch in that guy. If there was, he would have told Delgado to get out there so he could win the game next inning.

you know
Your signature betrays you. “Beltran lines out” suggest Beltran hit the ball hard, and yet was unlucky, right?

What do you mean "don't buy it"?
Hitting the ball hard but right at a fielder is bad luck. With Beltran’s line drive rate this year, he should be hitting like 20 or 30 points higher. Even Keith Hernandez recognizes this.
C'mon Wags
I should put in at least an hour of work today . . . get this over with.
