Just heard about Pedro's father's death
He won’t be starting tomorrow. Obviously he should take as much time as he needs.

Rollins a late scratch?
I’ll take an Eric Bruntlett ground out to lead off the game.

133 strikeouts for you, Ryan Howard.
We should make a pool for what date he’ll notch 200.

Here are my two questions
1. Why does Jerry insist on having somebody crappy hit second?
2. Why does Jerry insist on hitting Castro eighth when he’s in the lineup? It’s like he’s decided the catcher always needs to hit in the same spot, and because Schneider is a crappy hitter that spot has to be eighth.
With this group of guys playing, the lineup should be Reyes, Wright, Beltran, Castro, Delgado, Tatis, Easley, Evans, Perez.
by JoshNY on Jul 24, 2008 12:20 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Because he thinks the same way as Willie, unfortunately

I'm with you on that.

I mean...
This isn’t rocket science I’m talking about here. I’m not using some sort of crazy advanced statistic that Joe Morgan would make fun of. Castro has the highest SLG% on the team. If you want to use him sparingly because “his durability is a concern” or “Schneider handles pitchers better” that’s one thing, but when he IS in the lineup, why not put him somewhere that he can do some damage?
by JoshNY on Jul 24, 2008 12:25 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
2 slot
counldnt agree. its criminal how poorly our second batters have been at getting on base. filling out the line up order is seriously not that hard.
by kendynamo on Jul 24, 2008 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
would you rather
see beltran hitting two? and stick evans in the 8 hole? the guy hasn’t established himself as a hitter yet and beltran’s career numbers in the 2-hole - if i remember correctly - are remarkable. castro hitting 8th is equally inane.
by goth brooks on Jul 24, 2008 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
hell yeah
beltran instead of evans in the 2 hole is a no brainer. pretty much anybody but evans in the two slot is preferable. evans, as the worst hitter in that line up, should be bating 8th, or maybe even 9th. hopefully he will improve but right now there no excuse for batting him 2nd.
by kendynamo on Jul 24, 2008 1:26 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Moyer is amazing, isn't he.
He is old, crafty, and the umpires respect him enough to make the strikezone extra wide.
Or, at least that’s what Wayne and Howie are telling me.
It would be better if they stopped fawning over the elderly Philly and complained about Nick Evans batting 2nd.
by IanB in MD on Jul 24, 2008 12:25 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Anyone watching the game?
Three backwards K’s for Moyer in the first five hitters, is he actually getting an overly generous strike zone?
by JoshNY on Jul 24, 2008 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm not watching
But Howie said that it is wider than normal.

one thing i'm noticing is how far the mets right handed batters
are standing towards the outside part of the batters box and moyer is painting the outside part of the plate. so the batters are hardly getting any good wood on it.
pop out to second then a pop to right field. not much wood or pop on the ball

true
but cancel is pretty much the worst hitter we’ve got. maybe marlon anderson at this point. i think it was a horseshit call. cancel is the 3rd strong back up, to use if youve already used castro, or even schnieder, as a PH in these situations. pretty egregious. manual basically sucks.

Hitting the ball hard but right at a fielder is bad luck. With Beltran’s line drive rate this year, he should be hitting like 20 or 30 points higher. Even Keith Hernandez recognizes this.
