Do the Mets need to make a trade or not?

The question that I have been pondering for a few eeks now is this; Should the Mets make a deal before the trade deadline? And if they did who or what would they target?

I still believe that this teams biggest need is for a corner outfielder. Even when Church comes back, Endy is not an everyday player, Tatis is usefull but not great, and Anderson is proving to be pretty much worthless.  Even if Church comes back there is no saying that he won't just get injured again. I think a corner outfielder is a must, followed by some bullpen help.

What does everyone else think?

Would like another OF/IF-type piece

Preferably an OF, I suppose, but I hope we don’t see Omar dumping three or four good prospects for an Ibanez or Dunn. I’m not saying those guys would be bad additions, and I, like most of us, don’t feel great about our current bench options, but my gut tells me that neither of those guys are worth clearing out the system yet again.

Agree

Ibanez and Dunn seem to be the names everyone is dropping, but there has to be someone available who is an in-betwwen better then Tatis and Anderson but cheaper than Dunn or Ibanez.

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

no selling the farm, please

No question this team has major flaws, especially needing some extra pop and OBP from its starters (half the “bench” is starting games). But this team’s farm system has been depleted by years of shortsighted trading for sometimes not-so-great older players. The Mets didn’t seem even to have the prospects to land Santana during the last offseason until Minnesota bungled the negotiations with their other suitors; and it’s been a good few (too many) years since a young player from the Mets’ system developed into a credible everyday major leaguer. Let’s not find ourselves hurting for young talent in two or three years by mortaging the future for a player like Adam Dunn.

pretty good but not worth selling the farm for?

I like Dunn as much as the next person who thinks batting average is way overrated, but I wouldn’t want to deal Fernando Martinez plus others for half a season of him plus the chance to pay Dunn a boatload of dollars, when the boatload of dollars ought to be enough by itself to get him this offseason.

It all depends on Church

If he can come back and be decent there is no need to trade for Ibanez. His WARP 1 this year is 2.0. Chavez is at 1.9. It doesn’t make sense to give away players for a guy who isn’t much of an upgrade. I don’t think the Mets have pieces (or desire to part with the pieces they have) to get anyone better than Ibanez. If Church is out, Ibanez would be an upgrade over Tatis or Anderson.

Juan Rivera is an interesting proposition. In the couple of seasons where he got some regular playing time, he was reasonably productive. And since he is basically the sixth outfielder he would probably come cheap.

I’d rather see them get a starter, maybe Paul Byrd, since Pedro is pretty useless. As scary as the bullpen is, most relief deals at the deadline seem backfire.

Can we count on Church for the rest of the year? Even if he comes back and looks good for a week or two, whats to say he stays that way? Jaun Rivera could be a huge help.
