500 Pitches Of Disappointment

Apparently Brandon Knight started this game, though I don't really remember so well at this point. Lots of comebacks for the Mets, but an unacceptable number of runners left on base, particularly in scoring position. Carlos Delgado is officially awesome again.

Big winners: Fernando Tatis, +47.3% WPA, Billy Wagner, +28.6% WPA
Big losers: Joe Smith, -27.6% WPA, Carlos Muniz, -25.5% WPA
Teh aw3s0mest play: TATIS!!, +43.3% WPA

I would just like to take a moment to thank...

All of the little people: Those who made fewer than 25 post(s)

Eric Simon: Who was gracious enough to accept multiple pics of Derek Jeter soliciting his foul smelling essence to the masses.

I.M. Forme: Who keeps me in stitches throughout the game.

Shomov: (Is that correct?) for getting all of the banter started w/regards to cheesy facial hair.

For anyone who I left out: Thank you for staying glued to the game. It had its ups, it had its downs but most of all…It had “us”. The fans! Without the fans…Sports aint nothin!

C’yall next time.

five hours of my life (plus travel time)

I was at the game last night, and I can say honestly that I questioned bringing in Muniz with a one-run lead in the sixth. I literally complained about it to my buddies before he threw a pitch.

What is the logic that says the last guy on the bullpen bench should come in with the top of the order coming up? I hate that the inning number-not the actual situation-determines which pitcher comes in. And then he blows the game up.

The real problem was the hitting, of course. They had guys on in every extra inning, and couldn’t push one across. It was all downhill after the failed Chavez bunt. What the fuck was that, anyway?

I blame Tatis

He made me sit around Shea for another 5 innings when we all could’ve gone home with the same result after the 9th. ;-)

And I disagree in blaming the offense. Yeah, they couldn’t get that one big hit in extras, but they wouldn’t have needed extras if the defense and pitching had done their jobs during regulation. Remember Chavez botching Pujols’ 1st inning fly? Yeah, turned out to be pretty big in restrospect.

true

That was an ugly job in the field there. My friend and I decided that Endy often doesn’t get great reads off the bat, but then makes up for it with his speed. On that ball, which was over his head and off the wall, he initially broke in before sprinting backward and spinning around a bunch. And he still almost made the play!

I can't believe

I didn’t log in until the top of the ninth, and still got the third-most posts. I have no life.

I was inspired by Eric's comment that Olerud had the best 3-year run as a Met outside Carlos Beltran to look at a few different Mets, and when I noticed that two of my all-time favorite players (Alfonzo and Strawberry) were kinda screwed by having (relatively)bad seasons in between some really good seasons, I decided to see which Mets had the best 3 seasons, period (non-consecutively). Beltran still comes out on top, but my all-time favorite player Alfonzo comes in 2nd place, and him and Straw are the only two to have three 6.0+ WAR seasons. Also interesting that Hundley comes out ahead of Gary Carter, Cleon Jones almost finishes ahead of Mike Piazza, and Joe McEwing doesn't make the list.
