Damn
And here I was, about to recite the lyrics. Oh well. At least SNY can’t steal this poll from us, right?

Let's Go Mets
But really I’m cheering for my swag contest prediction (which is a secret!) to come true because I want to win a life-sized stuffed Mr. Met doll. I just know that Eric has one!
Yankees got Pudge?
And all they gave up was Farnsworth? Holy shit.

Reyes & Reyes
Either a personal injury law firm, or a very good 1-2 punch.

2 groundouts and a K
Yep, he’s looking mighty good these days.

Got home in time to see Pelfrey in the first
Big Pelf does, indeed, look pretty alright.

Marlon
How much longer is Jerry going to keep hoping Marlon gets it together? We’re in a tight race here.

Till Omar gets the perfect trade
Marlon Anderson for a ham sandwich, a bag of kettle chips and a Dr. Brown’s root beer.

We'll even throw in Schneider
For a piece of crumbcake.

You know, I was tempted

Well, he did just make a sweet tag on Uggla.
Maybe there’s something to this, after all.

ugh
Do we really need Schneider and Anderson in the same lineup?

No team does

Can we use this thread as an open trade discussion forum?
I’m worried the Marlins’ possible acquisition of Manny Ramirez might make Omar send Niese to the Mariners for RAúúúúúúúúúúúúúúl Ibañez.
You really think he'd be that desperate?
The Marlins have problems that Manny not only won’t cure, but actively exacerbate. That’s not the kind of veteran you bring on to a team loaded with young players.
by BobbyV_Incognito on Jul 30, 2008 7:48 PM EDT up reply actions
send Omar an e-mail
with the Marlins RS/RA that shows that, barring incredible luck, they will be out of this by September.

I don't think the Mets make estimations of teams based on run differential.
by JohnPeterson on Jul 30, 2008 7:52 PM EDT up reply actions
Not sure if anyone does
except the A’s and maybe the Red Sox.
by BobbyV_Incognito on Jul 30, 2008 7:54 PM EDT up reply actions
what's funny
is that based on run differential, the Braves and Marlins should have each other’s record.
Of course, the Braves are now finished with Hudson and Larry Wayne hurt and Teixeira playing in Disneyland.

But if your arm gets tired, or if you start to blister, switch arms.
If we do . . .
Omar will get on the phone after the game and give Seattle F-Mart, Niese, $8,000,000 and a Diamond Club suite at CitiField for next year in exchange for Jose Guillen. Then I will cry.

pelfey
was due for a bad game, but I have my doubts if we can make do with Tatis and Endy/Marlon for rest of season. I think Omar is going to make some move
Save America. Impeach Bush
Agreed
On all counts. Tatis is smoking hot and I have no problem with Jerry riding him until he turns back into a pumpkin. Endy is a fine defensive replacement and Marlon Anderson, well, his mom sure thinks highly of him.
Don't be so sure about that
She may have seen him play this year

I would say gooden too
HEre’s another: what HOF pitcher who is predominately a starter was the most recent to make his major league debut
Save America. Impeach Bush
you might be suprised with the answer
Save America. Impeach Bush
I'm thinking either
Nolan Ryan or Tom Seaver. Can’t remember who came up first.
by BobbyV_Incognito on Jul 30, 2008 9:04 PM EDT up reply actions
you're very warm
Save America. Impeach Bush
final answer
ok you’re right. I was amazed by this. The next starter to go in will probably be Clemens and he started in 1984 so that means that no starter will have made the HOF who started in bigs between 1967-1984
Save America. Impeach Bush
Probably won't be Clemens
Not after the whole McNamee affair. And the actual affairs
by BobbyV_Incognito on Jul 30, 2008 9:09 PM EDT up reply actions
I think he will and
should get in. If he doesn’t than the next guy in hasn’t even retired yet-Glavine, Maddux, Johnson, Martinez, Smoltz?
Save America. Impeach Bush
That's assuming that
Morris and Blyleven never garner enough support. Bert should, but won’t. Jack shouldn’t, but might. And for the record, I think the whole steroids thing taints Clemens far too much. Personally, I think there’s too much of a cloud around him to allow him in.
by BobbyV_Incognito on Jul 30, 2008 9:13 PM EDT up reply actions
I think Morris deserves to be in
more than Blyleven. I think he won more games in the 1980s than anybody and how about Game 7 performance against the Braves.
Save America. Impeach Bush
“most wins in the 1980s” is an arbitrary time delimiter added on top of the act that wins are a poor way to measure a pitcher’s performance
excuse me
I’m sorry I picked he wrong time delimiter. I thought this was baseball, not quantum physics
Save America. Impeach Bush
excuse me
I’m sorry I used a long word. “time period” if you prefer. The point is it’s arbitrary. Why is that more important than who had the most wins from 1983 to 1993?
Not so much arbitrary
as it is convenient. And yeah, Game 7 was a hell of a performance by Morris, but it’s just one game. You might as well cite his 16 Opening Day starts.

I know what
you meant. I was commenting on your pompousity
Save America. Impeach Bush
It was your way with words Josh
Save America. Impeach Bush
never mind
forget it
Save America. Impeach Bush
Predominantly
I’m assuming this is to discount Dennis Eckersley, though Eck threw many more innings as a starter than a reliever.
The fact that we're going that far back
is both a damning indictment of pitchers from the ‘70s and 80s, and a testament to the longevity of those who really were great.

by BobbyV_Incognito on Jul 30, 2008 9:14 PM EDT up reply actions
that woke everybody up
no more trivia questions we have a game. Easley is ok as starter but I woud rather see him coming off the bench and let Reyes play second and send Castillo home.
Save America. Impeach Bush
The Mets have had so many viable second basemen
but they’ve always made the wrong decisions about them.
by JohnPeterson on Jul 30, 2008 9:15 PM EDT up reply actions
Heh
For a second there I thought you meant Jose Reyes. I was trying to figure out who was playing short.
I gasp every time a ball is hit to Marlon.
You know, I am never going to embiggen us all with my game thread contributions. I can’t see it happening.
I was thinking the same thing
Not about your embiggening skills, but rather about when Endy was coming in as a defensive replacement and Tatis was being moved to left field.
'Catsmeat!' he cried. 'I see it all. It was that chump, Catsmeat.'

Joe
has really sucked lately. We need some bullpen help too
Save America. Impeach Bush
Marlins
have tailored their team to the ballpark with Green Monster Lite in left center and their righthanded power. They are pretty scary
Save America. Impeach Bush
since when is Florida a bad team
Save America. Impeach Bush
Since they're outperforming Pythagoras
by 6 games
by BobbyV_Incognito on Jul 30, 2008 9:42 PM EDT up reply actions
in other words
Since they’re lucky to be 5 (soon to be 6) games over .500 when they’ve been outscored by 30 runs over the course of the season
this is absurd
a win is a win. It doesn’t matter how you get there. they are not a bad team and have a good chance of finishing ahead of the Mets who I guess aren’t “lucky.”
Save America. Impeach Bush
They're not a 'bad' team
but they are decidedly mediocre. They’ve been outscored by 30 runs so far this season. That doesn’t happen to good teams
by BobbyV_Incognito on Jul 30, 2008 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions
hey Josh
stick to your guns. Don’t flip flop on me
Save America. Impeach Bush
so they're like about a game more mediocre
than the Mets
Save America. Impeach Bush
More than that.
Coming into the night, the Mets were meeting their Pythagoran prediction. In other words, they’re about where their run differential would lead you to expect them to be
by BobbyV_Incognito on Jul 30, 2008 9:51 PM EDT up reply actions
oh I thought you were kidding
what is this pythagorean bullshit is it pitching squared plus hitting squared equally mets blogger squared
Save America. Impeach Bush
Nothing so complicated
Runs scored vs. runs allowed. The higher your run differential, the better your expected record. According to Pythagoras, a team that’s -30 should be a few games under .500. Outperforming Pythagoras means a team’s been lucky.
by BobbyV_Incognito on Jul 30, 2008 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions
this is bullshit
Luck can’t be behind a team being 6 games over 500 after more than 100 games are played.
Save America. Impeach Bush
Sorry
Didn’t mean to hit ‘post’. But why can’t luck be behind a team overperforming? Isn’t a player who has a career season just getting lucky?
by BobbyV_Incognito on Jul 30, 2008 9:59 PM EDT up reply actions
Then what is it, then?
If a career .250/.320/.380 hitter puts up a .330/.400/.510 line for just one season, and then reverts back to his normal craptacular ways, that’s not luck?
by BobbyV_Incognito on Jul 30, 2008 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions
