Around SBN: Steve McNair Dead - Former NFL QB Shot and Killed

Hardball Times article "The remains of the season: Mets edition"

This'll probably end up in an 'applesauce' post but just in case Eric's preoccupied with the trade deadline. good read.

I have a huge problem with one thing!

“Brian Schneider has been an upgrade behind the plate. “

Compared to what?

I think Studeman is just talking about defense

And Schneider is an upgrade over LoDuca there.

Nice

That article has the best one-sentence summary of the reaction to the Willie firing that I’ve seen:

“The New York media had a cow because the timing of Randolph’s firing wasn’t convenient for them.”

Quotable

“But here’s what I want to ask you: Who’s leading the Mets in Runs Created? Beltran? Nope. Wright? Delgado? Nope. Nope. Jose Reyes is. Or try to answer this one: Who’s leading all major league shortstops in Runs Created? Hanley Ramirez? Nope. Derek Jeter? Jimmy Rollins? Nooo! It’s the same guy, Mr. Jose Reyes. Reyes has quietly (if anything can be done quietly in New York) put together a heck of a season, on track to set personal highs in both OBP and SLG. But you haven’t heard much about it, have you?”

I was inspired by Eric's comment that Olerud had the best 3-year run as a Met outside Carlos Beltran to look at a few different Mets, and when I noticed that two of my all-time favorite players (Alfonzo and Strawberry) were kinda screwed by having (relatively)bad seasons in between some really good seasons, I decided to see which Mets had the best 3 seasons, period (non-consecutively). Beltran still comes out on top, but my all-time favorite player Alfonzo comes in 2nd place, and him and Straw are the only two to have three 6.0+ WAR seasons. Also interesting that Hundley comes out ahead of Gary Carter, Cleon Jones almost finishes ahead of Mike Piazza, and Joe McEwing doesn't make the list.
