Is this a big game or something?

The pendulum can swing between .5 game back and 8.5 games back depending on how this series goes.

Nice start

Reyes has been drawing a lot more walks over the past couple of months.

My impression of Delgado’s fielding:

Well

That inning is a disaster if Santana isn’t so slick with the glove.

haha

did anyone else just think that Keith said, “No sh*t.”

Too good a hitter

Doesn’t really fit into the Mets’ plans of utter ineptitude. I suspect Jerry just wants to give him a day off against a lefty; make sure Church gets plenty of rest after his post-concussion issues.

Happ's gone

The Phillies have to get at least 4.1 innings out of their bullpen in the first game of a four-game series. Nice work, even if it’s only 2-0.

about that Beltran fella

I know this subject is touchy around here, but here are my observations:

fielding: can’t get much better
baserunning: like butter
basestealing: latent ability
fouling off pitches with 2 strikes: not so much

I blame the tennis ball machine he works with, it encourages him to watch.

I think so

I conjectured above that Manuel wants to give him the occasional day off to rest his weary head. Happ is a decent lefty so tonight was a good fit.

But for some reason the same principle doesn’t extend to Delgado.

Way too important a situation. He’ll take a pass here and maybe take a crack at it in the 14th if we make it there.

Phew

Wright’s throw sailed a little bit there; Delgado does a good job of keeping his foot on the bag, in general, and knows when it’s a good idea to leave the bag and apply the tag instead. Otherwise the dude is absolute shit at first.

Lay off Santana

How many pitchers with a sub-3 ERA are 7-7? Thanks to Beltran and the boys, Mr. Santana. NO OFFENSIVE SUPPORT for this guy. He has to be perfect to win.

There we go.

Clutch hits. Still this team’s Achille’s Heal. Note that all 3 Phillie runs came with 2 out. Freakin team. Kudos to Santana for pitching 8 tough innings.

The 2008 NY Mets: Reyes singles. Castillo infield single. Wright walks. Beltran lines out. ZaBlanc bitches. Delgado strikes out. Reyes picked off third. Fans boo. Padres win 2-1.

by ZaBlanc on Jul 4, 2008 9:41 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

no kudos

Sure he pitched great, but when you’re the best pitcher in the game you have to put the team on your shoulders and pitched the goddamn shutout. He had the 2 run lead and couldn’t get the big out. He seems to have just one bad inning and he’s just good enough for his lifeless team to lose and the Carloses just suck big time.

Save America. Impeach Bush

by elifriedman on Jul 4, 2008 9:45 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Give him a break

You give up 2 runs to the Phillies lineup in 8 innings, you are being a damn good pitcher. The Mets couldn’t manage a single RBI via a hit. Give me a break.

I was inspired by Eric's comment that Olerud had the best 3-year run as a Met outside Carlos Beltran to look at a few different Mets, and when I noticed that two of my all-time favorite players (Alfonzo and Strawberry) were kinda screwed by having (relatively)bad seasons in between some really good seasons, I decided to see which Mets had the best 3 seasons, period (non-consecutively). Beltran still comes out on top, but my all-time favorite player Alfonzo comes in 2nd place, and him and Straw are the only two to have three 6.0+ WAR seasons. Also interesting that Hundley comes out ahead of Gary Carter, Cleon Jones almost finishes ahead of Mike Piazza, and Joe McEwing doesn't make the list.
