Ugh
While I clearly think giving Church the day off is the right move, this lineup is really dogshit without him.
So he's getting the day off
because of migraines? I guess this really makes Jerry’s move to give him a day off for Game 1 even more crazy.
"I got my pregnant wife (the Yankee fan) with me. Hoping my kid learns to kick her everytime the Mets score." -Schifftis-
Well
Surely he couldn’t have predicted the migraine. If Church were to get a day off it would make sense that it be one of the first two games against a lefty, not today against Kendrick.
ugh, Marlon
We’re all professionals here, right?
We've got ourselves a ball club, the Mets of New York town!
ah all the elements of mets baseball are here
unrequited baseloading, stars useless with RISP, befuddlingly bad defense. I feel so at home.
At least it gave us a new nick: “Wave em off” Marlon.
I.M. Forme
Endy!
Now that’s how you catch a ball, Marlon.
We've got ourselves a ball club, the Mets of New York town!
what's happening, Doc.
I haven’t been around for too many game chats lately, but I usually catch up on them when I get home.

Ollie is really giving the Mets a chance to win here
Some more runs would be nice.

man, Endy needs to be dropped down in the order

The step back the Mets took this year.
All-Star teams announced. No Jose. No David Wright. No Beltran.
The 2008 NY Mets: Reyes singles. Castillo infield single. Wright walks. Beltran lines out. ZaBlanc bitches. Delgado strikes out. Reyes picked off third. Fans boo. Padres win 2-1.
Wright, Reyes
Wright was rightfully beaten out by Chipper. Chipper is having a great year. That said, will he play? Reyes should be there. Pitchers haven’t been announced, nor subs. Santana will be there. Wright will, too. Beltran won’t, though. Hopefully Reyes doesn’t get in…he can use the shot in the arm, plus, I’d like to see him get some rest.

We already know about the reserves
and Wright and Reyes aren’t among them. Nor Santana. Billy Wagner is the sole representative from the Mets. And honestly, I don’t care. Better our stars get rest than participate in a sham exhibition.
Game chat from Warsaw, Poland
Hey all – is the team still as mediocre as I left it before heading to Europe?

indeed.
You’re not missing much. Flashes of brilliance, punctuated by stretches of utter ineptitude.

Thank about it.
We have a team with Jose Reyes, David Right, Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, Johan Santana, Pedro Martinez…................and our closer is our lone rep. Wow.
Looking at the reserves, I don’t like Clint Hurdle’s pick. Can’t expect better froma guy who should have been fired before his team sold their souls last year.

Nice one, Christina

please just bring in billy wagner ASAP
Somehow I feel this is another game where he won’t make an appearance
Billy's gotta come in.
Duaner is handing the Phils a huge rally…give it to the All-Star.

sanchez is ineffective
with the glove and with the hurling. if its not one thing, it’s another.
I.M. Forme
HOLY SHIT, that 3-2 was a clear strike!
It better be Wagner and Feliciano
what higher leverage situation could there be?
That’s insane! Two outs make the difference? That’s just suicide
Dale Scott could call the game on account of rain
one of the only ways i see the mets taking this one.
I.M. Forme
It's so fucking painful to watch Perez pitch a great game, the Mets waste opportunities in every single inning,
and then a bullshit ball call on 3-2 to Utley, and now bringing in a much inferior reliever with 1st and 2nd with one out in the bottom of the eighth. Why can’t managers get it through their idiotic skulls that IN THE HIGHEST LEVERAGE SITUATIONS, ONE SHOULD USE THE BEST AVAILABLE RELIEVER, and that is Billy Wagner, the expensive closer.
And now the rain delay.
Keep raining.
The offense has killed us all year. The Mets could easily be on their way to 3 wins ina row IN PHILLY. How great would it be? But, barring a miracle sustained rain storm, we may very well go down 1-2. And that’s our problem this year.
And once again I’ll say it…no matter how irritated it makes everyone…but you guys have to STOP trying to sugarcoat our season with numbers. All the numbers in the world can’t hide the fact this team is NOT a contender right now. Someone, or two, needs to make a change. Either Delgado has to find his old stroke back, or Alou needs to get healthy and produce, or Perez and Maine have to keep pitching like they are.
BTW, again, great trade…give credit where it’s due. Benson for Maine. Nifty.

according to FanGraphs.com, Beltran is plenty "clutch".

he has been pretty clutch
this year…..now David Wright on the other hand
Save America. Impeach Bush
What-ever.
Hide behind the numbers. Forget everything you see. Clutch single indeed. But TATIS has hit two bigtime homers this year for us…and he plays a fraction of the time and gets a fraction of the money.
The 2008 NY Mets: Reyes singles. Castillo infield single. Wright walks. Beltran lines out. ZaBlanc bitches. Delgado strikes out. Reyes picked off third. Fans boo. Padres win 2-1.
Come now, are you suggesting...
that Tatis is an everyday player? By the way, you do recognize that, in accusing us of hiding behind of numbers, you offered up your own stats? ;-)

In case anyone forgot...
HRs that Beltran hits actually result in runs being taken AWAY from the Mets.
i've seen enough of Billy in the big spots
Dude comes a small a lot + his mouth = My least favorite Met
Perhaps this was his way of celebrating
his being named to the All-Star roster.

"big game" billy has just ruined my day
i wait through a rain delay longer than the game for this?
where can the mets get a closer? i can’t wait to bid adieu to Billy Goat—
I.M. Forme
Is Billy Goat my favorite Met?
Naaaaaahhhh!

he did
Iguchi in Game 2 and he almost blew Maine’s lead in Game 6. I remember having very little confidence in him in that series. I can’t stand him and his big mouth
Save America. Impeach Bush
did anyone notice...
Chavez tried to bunt for a base hit in the top of the ninth with a 3-1 count and Reyes on second?
Fernando Tatis has such a stupid, long, loopy swing.
How the hell was he ever successful in the big leagues?
Here's my question
to those who chose “He’s not any good” on today’s poll: Is ARGENIS REYES a better PH-ing option?
oh well, when is Beltran coming up again?
tomorrow?
Another reason to hate the 08 mets: it’s the way they waste our time with long drawn out chokes, didnotcompetes, and other mishaps.
I.M. Forme
well...
This is what we get for only scoring two runs.
BTW, there are two other games in exra innings right now.
Houston 6, Atlanta 6, bottom 15. 2 outs.
Detroit 1, Seattle 1, going to the 15th.
My events...
Watching Joba throw 4 strong.
The 2008 NY Mets: Reyes singles. Castillo infield single. Wright walks. Beltran lines out. ZaBlanc bitches. Delgado strikes out. Reyes picked off third. Fans boo. Padres win 2-1.
Yea, Delagado swing that bat.
They just insulted you by throwing that pitch over your head. You should write that in your little notebook.
interesting stat
I have the Sox-Yanks game on the tube. (I am watching our game via MLB.TV.) Francona’s on-field managing is becoming a bit suspect. As of this moment, Boston is 1-for-6 in stolen base attempts in this series. (Why would you want to run against Molina is beyond me.) Francona is giving away WAY too many outs.
I don't know...
Even Ortiz-less, I would still kill to have that lineup. Also, remember the botched SB attempt in the ninth in Tampa?

I saw all those comments pop up and managed not to read them.
Instead I looked at the screen and convinced myself that they were a response to my overwhelming wittiness, instead of something of import in the game.
Jimmy Rollins
I’d trade Beltran for Rollins straight up if offered. No hesitation. Anyone else?
The 2008 NY Mets: Reyes singles. Castillo infield single. Wright walks. Beltran lines out. ZaBlanc bitches. Delgado strikes out. Reyes picked off third. Fans boo. Padres win 2-1.
yeah, last I checked...
Beltran can’t play shortstop.
by JE on Jul 6, 2008 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions
Sure it is.
I’m not going to make points based on streaks. Beltran had a clutch hit today, and I cheer him on for it. That doesn’t make me change my mind, though. If I made sugh high-level points of the Mets weaknesses this year based on a 4-game streak, or one that would require me to take it all back because he managed an insurance single, that would be lame indeed.
Tatis did what I want to see Beltran (and Wright) do more often. It seems are biggest hits have come off the bats of Tatis and Easley this year. Weird.
The 2008 NY Mets: Reyes singles. Castillo infield single. Wright walks. Beltran lines out. ZaBlanc bitches. Delgado strikes out. Reyes picked off third. Fans boo. Padres win 2-1.
Um
Look up clutch in a dictionary. 3rd inning, 0-0, ain’t it. Nice homer. Not what I’m talking about.
The 2008 NY Mets: Reyes singles. Castillo infield single. Wright walks. Beltran lines out. ZaBlanc bitches. Delgado strikes out. Reyes picked off third. Fans boo. Padres win 2-1.
Losers hit HRs in the third inning, winners hit HRs in the ninth inning
Oddly enough, in the 16th inning it switches back to losers again
your memory notwithstanding...
Tatis deserves credit for his home run, but come now, he plays when everyone else on the team is dead or dying.

I think you're beating a live horse
Almost everyone here disagrees with you. That doesn’t mean you’re wrong, but at least take a step back and think about whether it’s really worth the fight, and if maybe you’re not giving Beltran enough credit. You’re welcome to keep making the same argument, but I think it’s a losing battle, and don’t be surprised when you continue to get very little support for it. If you’re just one of those cats that will never forgive Beltran for striking out looking to end the 2006 LCS, well, then nothing he or we can do or say will change your opinion of him.
Nice win.
Hopefully, for once, it means we’re not due to have our hopes dashed again tomorrow. How good would 3 of 4 look>
