This is basically the same line up that left 14 on base yesterday

On plus side, it’s basically the same line up that got 14+ guys on base to be left on

by Reg Dunlop on Jul 7, 2008 6:46 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

just checked

thats 5 position player with below average OPS+, including our super sweet #2 hitter’s 68 (including a .308 obp). thats effing gross. but then again its 8-0 in the third so i guess its working out ok right now.

Two Problems With The All-Star Game Nowadays, To Me

1. Since the AL and the NL play interleague games, the novelty of the match-up has died for me.
2. The game has meaning. Why ruin such a fun time with seriousness? I always saw the All-Star game and the break as a breather for everyone, those in the game and those outside the game.

I used to love watching the All-Star game, seeing the NL and AL players mix it up they way they didn’t during the season. The atmosphere of an All-Star game was relaxing. The players played but weren’t trying to take each other out and such. They were competitive but not so much as to not have it’s light moments. All-Star games should be frivolous and light-hearted. Not every single game during the course of a season has to have deep meaning and consequences. AL/NL pride was enough in my day, dagnabit!

I don’t care about it, anymore, and I don’t watch or listen to it. It’s too serious now. Thank you, MLB, for taking the fun out of baseball… again.

i think the game is still light-hearted

no one knows who’s gonna be in the WS, so none of the players really have a significant stake in the outcome. i’m sure the players want to win more for bragging rights than anything else

I love these games

When I just turn it on to see the Mets up by 5. Too bad they are so rare.

by Reg Dunlop on Jul 7, 2008 8:02 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

it's great to see another team

play as listlessly as the mets have played on some occasions.

Reyes

Now batting .301 and I would imagine his OBP is now around .360. He is back. Now will anyone in the press notice and start laying off the kid.

by Endys Game on Jul 7, 2008 8:08 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not really

he is a terrific fielder and has made some gems in this series. He slumped in June with the glove but will bounce back. last year he should have won a Gold Glove. His bat has been hot since May and he has been getting on base. I know he acts goofy sometimes but he is the Mets’ best player. And he is maturing, he is still only 24.

by Endys Game on Jul 7, 2008 8:14 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

His fielding is cause for concern

His RZR is down about half a point from his past two seasons and he is making fewer plays out of zone. He ranks way down among NL SS this year in terms of fielding which is a surprise given his play the last two years.

by Reg Dunlop on Jul 7, 2008 8:24 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

just not that concerned about it

if it keeps up, I would change my mind of course. But we have seen in the last two days, that he still more than capable in the field. Again when he slacks off mentally, he sometimes butchers the routine play or gets to a ball late. That will change when he grows up. There is nothing that suggests he has actually lost range physically.

need to have him strong for the second half and he needs his confidenice back.

by Endys Game on Jul 7, 2008 8:11 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i don't think we need pedro

starting pitching hasn’t been this team’s problem…consistent hitting has been a problem, but i think the offense has been playing a lot better on this road trip

it looks like the mets will be 7-5 on this trip if the score holds up, but they could have easily been 9-3. maybe this team is finally turning around.

by englishgrey on Jul 7, 2008 8:13 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

starting pitching

The offense needs to play more consistently , that goes without saying. But the starting pitching still has issues. Perez is still an engima, Pelfrey still a work in progress (albeit a sucessful one) and Maine can still be very spotty at times. The pitching might be good enough to win some games but to really take off we need Pedro to step it up.

by Endys Game on Jul 7, 2008 8:18 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Pitching has been worse than you think

7th in the NL in ERA, 12th in BB, 8th in HR’s. Not bad but not great. And those numbers have improved a little with Perez and Pelf having some good starts lately.

by Reg Dunlop on Jul 7, 2008 8:18 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Walks

that is the key. Far too many of those. Elevates pitch counts needlessly and taxes our bullpen. That is my problem with Maine and why i don’t think he is really a top starter in the league yet. Too many walks and pitches thrown.

by Endys Game on Jul 7, 2008 8:20 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

the starting pitching may not be great

but i feel like they usually keep us in games…it seems like the losses come more often from a lack of offense or the bullpen blowing the game. but that’s just anecdotal…haven’t really bothered to look at the stats

by englishgrey on Jul 7, 2008 8:27 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

holy shit

i just got around to checking the score on the internet. 8-0?!? why didnt somebody say something?

by kendynamo on Jul 7, 2008 8:10 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I just hope

Manuel doesn’t leave Pedro in too long if he struggles. He’s thrown 39 pitches through 2 and only 22 strikes.

since we have beltran lovers/haters in da hizzy, a question to kill some time

what do youall make of Belty’s inability to foul off pitchers with 2 strikes. he has problems with breaking stuff I know, but I find it most puzzling that he watches those called third strikes go sailing by so often. Shouldn’t a MLB hitter be able to protect the plate with 2 strikes?

When is the last time the Mets beat a good team, in a hostile atmosphere, so badly—that none of us had complaints? Good pitching, hitting, D.

I'm gonna disagree

It’s still just a three run deficit and you’ve gotta do whatever it takes to get on base. You don’t quit trying to win the game just because someone’s got a perfect game going.

I was inspired by Eric's comment that Olerud had the best 3-year run as a Met outside Carlos Beltran to look at a few different Mets, and when I noticed that two of my all-time favorite players (Alfonzo and Strawberry) were kinda screwed by having (relatively)bad seasons in between some really good seasons, I decided to see which Mets had the best 3 seasons, period (non-consecutively). Beltran still comes out on top, but my all-time favorite player Alfonzo comes in 2nd place, and him and Straw are the only two to have three 6.0+ WAR seasons. Also interesting that Hundley comes out ahead of Gary Carter, Cleon Jones almost finishes ahead of Mike Piazza, and Joe McEwing doesn't make the list.
