forgive my ignorance but...

are we calling someone up?

I guess this assumes...

that Niese or Stokes would take the fifth spot.

I missed teh game last nite so Im glad to see Keith back!

Dumb Idea

The Mets shouldn’t be thinking of putting any of the starters listed in the bullpen. I could be out of my mind for saying this but a good starter is more important. You’d be better off putting any of the young pitchers you bring up in games as middle relievers. Take Niese or Stokes and put them in the pen to get their feet wet as middle relievers. If Heilman was a good or effective starter, do you think he would’ve been in the bullpen? In 25 career starts his ERA was over 5.00. You could be hurting yourself more if you put Maine or Perez in the bullpen—would they take to it well? If not, and the young starters falter, then you’re shooting yourself in both feet.

This 100-pitch limit has kept more pitchers healthy and effective longer, right?

I think so. You see a lot more dudes pitching into their early 40s. I’m with the guy at BP (or somewhere?) who said teams should take advantage of the shorter outings and consider going back to the four-man rotation.

by Simons on Aug 13, 2008 7:16 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

less maybe

the fewer times through the order is always better for pitchers

Some manager should try a “twice through the order” rule for the starters with some good long relievers

the METS will play a total of 14 games against teams below .500 (NATS, PIRATES, BRAVES) in a row. If there is anytime to go on a serious winning streak, it would be…NOW!

The Nationals suck because the defense is failing to make plays like the play Zimmerman failed to make Wright’s tough dribbler. I like him as an announcer, but only when he is bragging about drinking and smoking in the clubhouse.

The contracts are a little weird on this game though. They change, Berkman only had a one year contract. I think that helped them decide to trade him…..even if it was for Zito.

I was inspired by Eric's comment that Olerud had the best 3-year run as a Met outside Carlos Beltran to look at a few different Mets, and when I noticed that two of my all-time favorite players (Alfonzo and Strawberry) were kinda screwed by having (relatively)bad seasons in between some really good seasons, I decided to see which Mets had the best 3 seasons, period (non-consecutively). Beltran still comes out on top, but my all-time favorite player Alfonzo comes in 2nd place, and him and Straw are the only two to have three 6.0+ WAR seasons. Also interesting that Hundley comes out ahead of Gary Carter, Cleon Jones almost finishes ahead of Mike Piazza, and Joe McEwing doesn't make the list.
