tbach81's bull pen fix

Imagine a world where the Mets' bullpen is terrible. Just god awful. Can you picture it?

These images have been forever burned into the depths of my mind.  So heres how I assess the situation and try to rectify things.

First the onus has got to fall on the GM to understand what he has supplied to the manager to utilize.  Since thats me, heres what I do.

In the bullpen right now Id really get rid of two guys and not think twice about getting rid of them.  First I would simply DFA/Release Scho and Blow as well as Heilman.  Id give them a first class ticket home and do it the day before a day off (dont want a repeat of the Wille incident).  The rest have performed adequately when they are put into positive situations.  We have a loogy in Pedro2 and a roogy in Smith.  We have a good closer in Wagner.  Id give Dirty a little time off to recuperate his dead arm and use Kunz and Stokes more.  Also, Id make Stokes the long relief guy.  Muniz would be optioned down with Niese and Parnell taking the spots of Scho and Heils.

The only other option that I would consider would be trading Fernando Martinez.  I really would not want to deal FMart but if the right guy was avaiable Id pull the trigger.  Most of our minor league talent is in the lower depths of the minors.  Flores, Marte, Havens, Davis, Tejada and Holt are all in lower part of the minors.  So our only real chance to get an impact bullpen arm would be to deal FMart.  So Id actually targer a very select group of guys.  If Huston Street, JJ Putz or George Sherril was able to be had in a trade Id have to seriously look at the idea of dealing FMart.  Acquiring any one of those guys helps bridge the gap to Wagner and gives us some insurance incase of Billy having another flare up with his forearm.  Also it has a positive effect on the rest of the bullpen becuase it lest them all bump up an inning and gives them a little less pressure to deal with.

Feel free to call me crazy but its just how Id handle things

I'm doing a little study on the NL East and thought I'd share an interesting little tidbit. To all of the self-loathing Mets fans/lazy 'MLB insiders' and journalistic parrots who have 1) Condemned the entire Mets organization as a joke 2) Written off this core's impressive run to date and 3) Deified the Phillies as unstoppable juggernauts w/ no chance to lose this division:

Yes, those wins are weighted towards '06-'07 and yes, the Phillies' are more recent but the fact remains that no other team in that span can even come close to the Mets total of days in first place, which should be garnering a lot more respect than it has. If only because we still have nearly the same core in place that has clearly had a lot of success and health-willing can very easily do so again in 2010.
