Laugher: Mets 12, Nationals 0

I guess it's nice to know that the Mets can still beat up on the also-rans. John Maine was solid in his first start back from the disabled list, though he'll have to do better than four walks in five innings. It could be that the couple of weeks off was enough rest to keep him strong through the summer and down the stretch, which will be a bonus as many starters begin to wear down in the season's final weeks.

Brian Stokes "saved" the game for the Mets. Regardless of how bad the Mets' bullpen is, if you need yet another indictment of the save as a ridiculous stat, that anyone could record a save in a 12-0 game should fit the bill. That said, Stokes was very strong through four innings, allowing the rest of the 'pen to take a much-needed day off.

Fernando Tatis: the legend continues to grow.

Dan Murphy: Benny Agbayani reincarnate.

Big winners: Fernando Tatis, +13.3% WPA, John Maine, +11.6% WPA
Big losers: Carlos Beltran, -2.7% WPA

"But it's not over yet, everybody thinks it over, but if we can just get the Earth to reverse rotation...this thing can be played again. So there you go, New York Mets......motherf*ckers." - Jon Stewart

I was inspired by Eric's comment that Olerud had the best 3-year run as a Met outside Carlos Beltran to look at a few different Mets, and when I noticed that two of my all-time favorite players (Alfonzo and Strawberry) were kinda screwed by having (relatively)bad seasons in between some really good seasons, I decided to see which Mets had the best 3 seasons, period (non-consecutively). Beltran still comes out on top, but my all-time favorite player Alfonzo comes in 2nd place, and him and Straw are the only two to have three 6.0+ WAR seasons. Also interesting that Hundley comes out ahead of Gary Carter, Cleon Jones almost finishes ahead of Mike Piazza, and Joe McEwing doesn't make the list.
