Friday Applesauce

This'll be a quick hits version of Applesauce because we're leaving in a couple of hours for Pittsburgh and Geek Day 2. Posting may be iffy over the next couple of days, but I've made sure the game forms are up and the game threads will be ready to go as well.

At MetsGeek, Alex Nelson looks at the pitchers the Mets will face over the next four days at PNC Park.

John Maine says he feels fine, but there's still concern about his shoulder.

Once a total question mark, Oliver Perez as looked ace-ish, and is probably the Mets' second-best starter right now.

Billy Wagner made a rehab appearance with Binghamton last night, pitching a 1-2-3 seventh inning and throwing 16 pitches in the process. He is expected back in time for Monday's game against the Pirates.

Chris Russo is leaving WFAN. One down, one to go.

The White Sox hit four straight homeruns last night, the third time a team has done so in the last three years but just the sixth time in the history of the sport.

Fat boy isn’t going to last long by himself. I see Joey B. and Evan Roberts in that slot in a year.

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

Have fun in Pittsburgh, guys

When I went for a weekend series in 2006, the Mets were one win away from clinching the division. They lost all three games I saw there. It really, really sucked.

It’s a beautiful park—you’ll see what we have to look forward to in Citi Field—but I won’t go back there if the Mets are playing. I’d see some other team, though.

We've got ourselves a ball club, the Mets of New York town!

That was a good thing, sort of

That series sweep allowed my brother and me to see the Mets clinch against the Marlins at home. Great night of baseball.

'Catsmeat!' he cried. 'I see it all. It was that chump, Catsmeat.'

yeah, of course we had to go to the Monday night game at Shea

And Trachsel threw a gem. But man, what a waste of a weekend. I felt compelled to smash a whole stack of Jack Wilson bobbleheads after the Saturday night game.

Incidentally, if you ever see that clincher game on Mets Classics, you can see me in the broadcast. It’s during Jose Valentin’s at-bat in the seventh inning.

Me and a friend are carrying a banner around in the Upper Deck with Mr. Met on it that says “Get your playoff tickets now. Call (718) 507-TIXX.”

On the broadcast, Gary Cohen says, “Wow, that’s a great sign. They even got the number right.” They spent a good 30 seconds talking about it and showing us, which was pretty cool.

That night was awesome

We got us those tickets weeks in advnace in hopes of cheering on the NL East Champs, but we lucked into front row seats in upper deck for the clincher. Our one mistake was standing around after the win to watch the antics on the field. By doing so we missed a chance to get the official tee-shirts. But really whatever because the Mets won the Division that night.

Mike and the Mad Dog

I say good riddance (to Dog and preemptively to Francessa). Why they have a Yankees fan and an SF Giants fan in the most listened-to time slot (I assume) on the Mets’ flagship station is beyond me.

Alright gang!

Time to feast on some more sub par opponents.

I was inspired by Eric's comment that Olerud had the best 3-year run as a Met outside Carlos Beltran to look at a few different Mets, and when I noticed that two of my all-time favorite players (Alfonzo and Strawberry) were kinda screwed by having (relatively)bad seasons in between some really good seasons, I decided to see which Mets had the best 3 seasons, period (non-consecutively). Beltran still comes out on top, but my all-time favorite player Alfonzo comes in 2nd place, and him and Straw are the only two to have three 6.0+ WAR seasons. Also interesting that Hundley comes out ahead of Gary Carter, Cleon Jones almost finishes ahead of Mike Piazza, and Joe McEwing doesn't make the list.
