Pedro time

I don’t think I’ve watched a full game of Pedro pitching this year (not deliberately, of course). I’m looking forward to it.

Well, maybe the Mets have finally learned how to feast on bad teams. A little late, but I’ll take it!

good start!

Jose!

Gary forgot to mention that Jose is 8th in the majors in VORP, 1 spot behind A-Rod. That’s another reason to consider him for MVP.

this is exhibit A

In why the Pirates suck while Minnesota/Oakland/Tampa Bay are awesome (well, not the A’s this year, but still). The Pirates just have no idea to develop players, and have wrecked a promising young pitcher like Duke (as they did Oliver Perez before). Contrast that to Minnesota, who churns out young pitcher after young pitcher who succeed. TB too.

Vote change: DePodesta/Acta in 2009!!!

by Greenpoint Ian on Aug 16, 2008 7:13 PM EDT reply actions

"this" is what?

Duke’s failure to become a great pitcher? I find the development-scouting part of the game kind of a mystery, actually — did the Pirates fail to develop Duke, or did they pick the wrong guy to try to develop? Organizations like the Marlins and Rays and Twins have great track records with young players, but is it a result of their coaching and teaching and how they handle them, or is it just that they pick the right guys to begin with?

by anonymous on Aug 16, 2008 7:24 PM EDT up reply actions

both the right guys and developing them right

Gary and Keith were both talking about how the Pirates messed with Duke’s delivery and he’s been a wreck ever since. I’ve seen comments about how Duke was messed up by Pittsburgh’s incompetent coaching over at Bucs Dugout as well.

by Greenpoint Ian on Aug 16, 2008 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I see

I don’t really know Duke’s history in that kind of detail. I mean, with an organization like the Pirates there has to be some reason to blame absolutely every facet of the way the team is run — but I wonder if another club would’ve been able to do any better with Duke.

No Keith

For the billionth time, the Yankees have good enough pitching. Their offense is pretty average, and that’s what’s killing them. They scored 2 runs through the 12 innings today, and only won because KC’s offense is even more wretched.

for when his skills start fading with age and the Yanks kick him to the curb like Bernie.

Then, if he signs with another team, do I root for him to make a surge and show the Yanks up, or for him just to keep sucking and finally be forced into retirement in disgrace.

There’s got to be a way to do both.

It’s the perfect combination of a mediocre but lucky pitcher vs. the Mets inability to score any runs for Santana. My guess is they lose 1-0 on a bases-loaded walk by Heilman in the bottom of the 9th.

With a lead this size against a team this weak, I’d rather see Pedro gut his way out of it (especially as his pitch count wasn’t too high) than ask for another inning from the bullpen.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.
