Maholm-ie
He’s got a nice little track record against the Metsies (3-1, 2.16 ERA since 2005). Let’s hope we can turn that around with a little day baseball!

God, I love early day games
It’s like a procrastination special, virtually guaranteeing I get no work done today. What could be better?

Camp Day Games
Did anyone every go to one of those mid-August ‘Camp-Day’ games that start good and early? I never went to a ball game as part of summer camp, but it seems like people from NYC did.

Day 1 of my week and a half off
Yeah, I’m done with work, but school doesn’t start until August 27th, so I’ll finally get a chance to watch a whole game in this series (left to go out on Friday and Saturday nights before the game was over, and finally saw the Dark Night yesterday afternoon).

I liked the Dark Knight
But I was bummed by the lack of a tie-in with Superman, Wonderwoman and the Wonder Twins. It would be rad if the “Superfriends” were done in the dark-brooding-hero style.

I'm still thinking it over
It seemed a bit rushed at times, as if they tried to cram a 3 hour movie into 2 1/2 hours. That being said, Ledger’s Joker was one of the most terrifying villains I’ve ever seen on screen. He was that rare bad guy who I was almost afraid to watch, out of fear of what he’d do next (see also: Anthony Hopkins in The Silence of the Lambs, and Joe Pesci in Goodfellas).
Overall, I liked it, but I’m not sure it’s the masterpiece everyone said it was.

Pretty much
If you take Ledger away, it’s a still a pretty good movie but his performance was far and away the highlight for me.

Yeah.
I think people keep leaving off one thing when they talk about how awesome the Dark Knight was – “..for an action-hero film.” Because the villain was great, and because Christian Bale talked like Cookie Monster, people were distracted. It was certainly exciting, but in that one scene where the Joker invaded the fundraiser they just cut away and we never found out what happened when the Joker was along with a room of Gotham’s rich and terrified. I hope they were all killed.

Pittsburgh’s rotation is really all over the place, isn’t it? Last year, Maholm looked terrible, and I thought that Snell and Gorzelanny had real chances to become stars. This year, Snell and Gorzelanny have been terrible, and Maholm has been the only good one.

good start for Maine
OT, but did anyone see what the Rays did last night? Up 7-3 in the bottom of the 9th, the bases were loaded for Josh Hamilton, and they intentionally walked Hamilton to force in a run, and then Marlon Byrd struck out to end the game.
I love how the Rays have gotten so confident that they’re doing ballsy things like that.

I liked it
To me, it said “we’re the fuckin’ Rays! C’mon and beat us!”. And it worked. The Rays went 7-3 on this recent road trip, and they hadn’t played well on the road this year. The pressure is really on the Red Sox now.

it only makes sense psychologically
As a screw-you gesture, it’s hard to beat spotting the other team a run as a kind of golf handicap — but there’s no effing way that did anything but decrease the Rays’ chances of winning the game. A good outcome does not make it a smart decision in retrospect.

That was ten kinds of basly. They need to be because the Red Sox have all the aura and mystique these days. Someone needs to slap them in the face with some balls.

My brother and I went to Fenway in 86
Dad got tickets on the first base line for a Boston-California game. We learned all the different ways Wall Joyner’s mom services dudes in Boston that weekend (he was a rookie.) There was much cussing.

If Maine’s shoulder is hurting a bit and maybe he loses 1-2 mph off his fastball, do we see this phenomenon getting worse? I mean, he can’t go 8-10 pitches deep in every at-bat where he rings up a two-strike count and he’s always seemed to have trouble sneaking that third strike past the bat.

The problem with Beltran (and A-Rod)
Is that they are not clutch enough. It is well documented by ESPN and other Boston-based ‘writers’ that Carlos and Alex have a clutch-deficiency and are thus useless. In fact, while science is looking for a cure for unclutchiness, they should retire.

Say what you will about the Red Sox in Williams’ day, but I’m willing to bet that Teds walk numbers is a product of him being the best hitter on a less-than-stellar team.

I’ve spoken with big baseball fans who lived during that era and they have all told me you wanted Joe D up in a big situation. Williams was selfish and cared about his stats more than his team. But back to Williams/DiMagio
If you wanted a batter to just make contact, I’d go with JoeD. All he ever did was hit or (sometimes) walk. He was not gonna strike out.
However, if you wanted somone who could make contact, or failing that, get his ass on base with a walk, I’d take Williams. That dude K’d as infrequently as Joe but walked like only Barry or Babe did.
So I guess I’d go with Ted in a pinch, but I don’t fault anyone for picking Joe. He was a damned awesome ballplayer.

Since I forgot to follow the game...
And since Eric doesn’t have the postgame thread up yet…
Why did Maine come out so early? Was it because of the walks? He had only thrown 96 pitches, wasn’t lifted for a pinch hitter. Surely he could’ve at least started the 6th.
Sanchez HAS to be able to get those guys out in the 8th. It’s hardly like that was Albert Pujols or Pat Burrell up there.
Why on earth is Endy and not Jose Reyes your pinch hitter leading off the 8th? (Unless Jose is injured rather than just getting an off day and I’m not aware of it.)

Re Maine
I took my lunch break during the 2nd inning and watched while I ran on the treadmill. Maine’s velocity was way down that inning – he was throwing his fastball around 86-87 mph. His control was off too. If he looked like that all game I think he was pretty lucky to throw 5 scoreless innings, and Manuel was smart for taking Maine out when he did.
