Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Leaky Ship: Astros 7, Mets 3

I was at one of those weird Friday night weddings and the reception hall in the hotel had zero cellular service and no WiFi within range. So what's a guy to do? Well, if that guy is me he sneaks out for a pee break every half hour and has the front desk clerk change the channel in the lobby lounge to SNY, that's what.

The first time I came out the Mets were winning 3-2. The second time it was 3-3 and Joe Smith was dominating. The third time it was still 3-3 and the Mets had the bases loaded with none out. We all know how that one ended, and the game unofficially ended a couple of innings later when Aaron Heilman gave up a grand slam to Mark Loretta. Big fail for the bullpen, again.

The consolation is that the Phillies and Marlins (and Braves and Yankees, if you care) also lost, so the Mets remain a game back of Philly in the NL East. Santana and Oswalt go tomorrow night.

Big winners: Jose Reyes, +11.8% WPA, Argenis Reyes, +8.6% WPA
Big losers: Aaron Heilman, -28.6% WPA, Endy Chavez, -18.8% WPA
Teh aw3s0mest play: Easley RBI single, +12.9% WPA
Teh sux0rest play: Loretta salami, -21.1% WPA
Total pitcher WPA: -27.2%
Total batter WPA: -22.8%

Big Winners/Losers?

Shouldn’t they be swapped?

technical difficulties

The only thing that pissed me off nearly as much as the METS BULLPEN losing another game!!!!!!!!!!!! ....was the fact that I wasn’t able to blog during the game because of some stupid technical difficulty between my service here at work and the site.

Did Armando Benitez leave a curse w/the METS? Honestly. What on earth is wrong w/our bullpen? I truly think it’s mental. The pitching coaches have obviously not made any mechanical adjustments to either: Heilman, Schowenweis et. al.

And it has to be mental w/the offense as well. Do the little fellas get scared when they see their own players on 2nd and 3rd? In scoring position? Do they need viagara for batters? Can they not get it up? It’s so utterly disgusting and embarassing to watch this play out over and over again. Almost every game is the same. Can’t score w/RISP and can’t finish w/the bullpen.

I was inspired by Eric's comment that Olerud had the best 3-year run as a Met outside Carlos Beltran to look at a few different Mets, and when I noticed that two of my all-time favorite players (Alfonzo and Strawberry) were kinda screwed by having (relatively)bad seasons in between some really good seasons, I decided to see which Mets had the best 3 seasons, period (non-consecutively). Beltran still comes out on top, but my all-time favorite player Alfonzo comes in 2nd place, and him and Straw are the only two to have three 6.0+ WAR seasons. Also interesting that Hundley comes out ahead of Gary Carter, Cleon Jones almost finishes ahead of Mike Piazza, and Joe McEwing doesn't make the list.
