Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Mets sign RHP Al Reyes (NY Post)

Reyes closed for the Rays last year. He had a 4.9 ERA but had a 1.15 WHIP. Gave up a lot of HR (1.93 HR/9) but also struck out 10 per 9 innings.

UPDATE [by Eric @ 4:18pm]: Reyes is 38, but has had very strong strikeout rates and so-so walk rates throughout his career. The longball problem he had last season with the Rays seemed to be a new development, as he had mostly kept the ball in the park throughout his career. Injuries have been a big problem for him, but this is a fine low-risk pickup.

Well

Let the shots in the dark continue . . . why the hell not?

'Catsmeat!' he cried. 'I see it all. It was that chump, Catsmeat.'

Omars plan is not complete

This weekend I just know he’s gonna make a waiver trade for Jo-Jo Reyes. He is collecting Reyes’.

Now I know why the Mets didn’t deat for Mark Texiera – he had the wrong last name!!!

GWRBI: Reyes

Man oh man I miss the GWRBI. So meaningless, but when I was 10 and 11, I always wanted to see Gary Carter’s name next to that more than anything. That guy was awesome.

I loved Gary Carter when I was a kid

I was so sad when I first found out that some of his teammates couldn’t stand him

They couldn't?

Way to shatter the illusion, man.sniff

We've got ourselves a ball club, the Mets of New York town!

Reyeseseseseses

I think maybe we should just use the Spanish collective form “Los Reyes” instead. In fact, we could just rename the team Los Reyes de Nueva York and be done with it.

Last year they seemed to be colecting Carloses for a while

We had ’Los Uno (Beltran), ’Los Dos (Delgado), and ’Los Tres (Gomez). For a while I though the Mets might go for ’Los Cuatro in the offseason, but then the Cubs re-signed Zambrano.

Alas, now they just have Uno and Dos.

Omar is doing what he can

with a bad situation. Reyes and Ayala are good pick-ups. Perhaps they can duplicate Guillermo Mota in 2006 with the juice

Save America. Impeach Bush

I was inspired by Eric's comment that Olerud had the best 3-year run as a Met outside Carlos Beltran to look at a few different Mets, and when I noticed that two of my all-time favorite players (Alfonzo and Strawberry) were kinda screwed by having (relatively)bad seasons in between some really good seasons, I decided to see which Mets had the best 3 seasons, period (non-consecutively). Beltran still comes out on top, but my all-time favorite player Alfonzo comes in 2nd place, and him and Straw are the only two to have three 6.0+ WAR seasons. Also interesting that Hundley comes out ahead of Gary Carter, Cleon Jones almost finishes ahead of Mike Piazza, and Joe McEwing doesn't make the list.
