Our 3d stringer

No, I meant the umpire.
How nice of Jerry to give away 3-4 outs to the Braves tonight.

Who is he?
I don’t think I’ve ever heard of him.
by Reg Dunlop on Aug 20, 2008 7:17 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
he's actually hit well of late
His OBP is up to .352. Yeah, he can barely get it out of the infield, but he’s been better of late.
And it goes without saying that I’d prefer Castro in there.

Argenis batting 2nd again
Maybe Jerry just likes to bat the 2nd baseman 2nd. Could be a symmetry thing.

When a ground ball pitcher is in. Hopefully he will make up in the field what he takes away at the plate

that's good stuff
I say let him run, even if he might have gotten lucky there with a good pitch to run on.

Not quite lucky
Seems like just about anyone faster than Hippo can run on Jurrjens

Some managers think there's a rule saying
that only middle infielders or centerfielders can hit in the first two slots. I’ve also noticed a correlation between being small and hitting second.

Interesting. I didn’t know that MLB placed limits on the length of a rehab stint.

and then they either have to activate him or, as Gary said, send him back to Florida.

I wouldn't mind seeing him come back
Easley hasn’t hit since early July and A. Reyes hasn’t hit ever. At least he draws walks.
by Reg Dunlop on Aug 20, 2008 7:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree
Commentators continue to talk as if they have been tearing it up.
The other night, Gary said the following about A Reyes (I paraphrase): He doesn’t have a high OBP, only has one extra base hit, hasn’t scored many runs, doesn’t drive in runs, but he is “always in the middle of things” — not sure how that can work.

Lots of sac bunts, maybe?
Though even that’s pushing it. If your big contribution to the scoring is always getting out, you’re not contributing.

Getting out alot in the two-hole?
He is “always [getting out] in the middle” of hits by Reyes and Wright?

Murphy is God!
I just can’t believe how well he commands the stike zone. You never see that with rookies, especially ones right out of AA.
Also, I love that Manuel has the confidence to let him protect Beltran. I remember shit-for-brains Randolph had Wright batting 7th for much of 2005, even though he was the 2nd best hitter on the team.
Also, ha ha, Larry Wayne Jones.

When did Ron turn into Joe Morgan?
If he starts blathering about ‘consistency’ and Gary Sheffield, we start planning the intervention

Ron hates computers
At some point, he has to prove he’s smart. References to Yale and his SAT score only go so far.

I say Bench and Piazza
by BobbyV_Incognito on Aug 20, 2008 8:16 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Bench and Gary Carter, I think
Piazza was 25 when he was a rookie. Gary was a lot younger when he broke in with Montreal.
