Aces High: Mets 3, Astros 0

The Mets were actually outhit by the Astros 8-4, but one of those four hits was an RBI bloop by David Wright in the first and another was another (!) bomb by the Schneid-dog. Otherwise the Mets were dominated by Roy Oswalt for most of eight innings.

Johan Santana didn't really have great stuff tonight but still held the Astros scoreless through seven innings and lowered his ERA to 2.64. He picked up his twelfth win of the season, which leaves him seven shy of Brandon Webb's league-leading 19. Santana would probably have to win all of his remaining starts -- probably six or seven -- to stand much chance of winning the Cy Young.

Aaron Heilman and Luis Ayala pitched a scoreless frame apiece to close out the game, as the Mets improved to 15 games over .500. The Phillies roughed up Greg Maddux in his Dodgers re-debut, so the Mets' lead remains 2.5 games.

Big winners: Johan Santana, +34.4% WPA, Brian Schneider, +13.7% WPA
Big losers: Carlos Beltran, -3.7% WPA, Carlos Delgado, -3.5% WPA
Teh aw3s0mest play: Brian Schneider, +15.0% WPA
Teh sux0rest play: Erstad double in 2nd, -9.0% WPA
Total pitcher WPA: +42.5%
Total batter WPA: +7.5%

Don't lump me in there

I don’t want my name attached.

'Catsmeat!' he cried. 'I see it all. It was that chump, Catsmeat.'

I love these fast games

2:08 on Wednesday. 2:18 last night. Keep it up and maybe my bullpen induced ulcer won’t be as bad.

I was inspired by Eric's comment that Olerud had the best 3-year run as a Met outside Carlos Beltran to look at a few different Mets, and when I noticed that two of my all-time favorite players (Alfonzo and Strawberry) were kinda screwed by having (relatively)bad seasons in between some really good seasons, I decided to see which Mets had the best 3 seasons, period (non-consecutively). Beltran still comes out on top, but my all-time favorite player Alfonzo comes in 2nd place, and him and Straw are the only two to have three 6.0+ WAR seasons. Also interesting that Hundley comes out ahead of Gary Carter, Cleon Jones almost finishes ahead of Mike Piazza, and Joe McEwing doesn't make the list.
