kind of a harsh poll question

i mean…the team’s in first and they had won 10 of their last 11. they’re not going to win ’em all.

that being said, i voted for “really fucking pathetic.”

yeah

They had been rolling pretty hard. As long as they don’t lose too much of their groove, I won’t be upset. But Maine needs work.

well, nuts to last night

Let’s Go Mets!

'Catsmeat!' he cried. 'I see it all. It was that chump, Catsmeat.'

Last night was gonna happen

Nothing last forever, people.

For instance, Catsmeat’s swag contest lead will last until the end of the month when he wins. Ha! Good work little brother.

I do what I can

Games like last night are no help but almost everyone sucked last night so no big deal.

Except Beelzebot – all picking again the Mets and getting 60 points.

'Catsmeat!' he cried. 'I see it all. It was that chump, Catsmeat.'

Also,

nice to hear Keith back in the booth. I’m pretty much over Gary/Ron solo games forever.

'Catsmeat!' he cried. 'I see it all. It was that chump, Catsmeat.'

was he serious?

Did Jose lose a bet or something? That was absurd.

I was wondering

something in the scouting report that Bernie Williams was in center-field today?

'Catsmeat!' he cried. 'I see it all. It was that chump, Catsmeat.'

Too early to be clutch!

nice one Bel-TRON!

'Catsmeat!' he cried. 'I see it all. It was that chump, Catsmeat.'

hold on

Wright’s walk was clutch.

The HR was just stats-padding.

Selfish baseball on his part

There is no BELTRAN in TEAM!

so goddamn UNCLUTCH

meaningless bomb in the first. come on. save that shit for the 7th, please.

That

That's what I was thinking.

Beltran has no sense of propriety or clutchness. What if the Mets need like two runs in the bottom of the 8th?

kiner’s gonna be in the booth today. i understand about half of what he says. good stories though.

and that

was a terrible at bat

by gogomets on Aug 24, 2008 2:05 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

what if

in this quantum-mechanical, non-intuitive universe where an effect sometimes precedes its cause, it actually is more conducive to winning to have a scrappy clubhouse leader who grinds out hits and fosters good chemistry than to have a big stats producer?

I would feel kinda silly.

Are you suggesting

The Mets should have more former punters on their roster?

by Reg Dunlop on Aug 24, 2008 2:16 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

not really

But what if there is a non-quantifiable phenomenon (we could call it an "Edge") where a player is “Driven” to win, mostly by playing the game the right way and wanting it more?

Just like how we can’t predict what happens to all the subatomic particles, we may never understand how to measure a player’s heart with today’s technology.

Can't wait for the movie

What the @#$%& do Bill James and Theo Epstein know?

by Simons on Aug 24, 2008 2:36 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yes, exactly

They can make Scary Movie 5 but can’t bankroll that movie?

what happened to Moneyball?

I thought they were making it, but I can’t find anything to suggest production ever began.

Emotional

Ty Wiggington slaps bat after K cool. Jose Reyes does it losing control of emotions.

Semi-Clutch!

After all it’s only the 5th

by Reg Dunlop on Aug 24, 2008 2:42 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Meh

Still too early to be clutch.

by ams258 on Aug 24, 2008 2:43 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't consider a Beltran hit to be clutch

unless it’s a grand slam in the bottom of the 9th with a full count and the Mets were trailing by 3 beforehand.

If Beltran did this in the top of the 9th, however, it would not be clutch.

by ams258 on Aug 24, 2008 2:44 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

and there have to be 2 outs, obviously

And really, it’s only clutch in the NLCS — doing it in the regular season doesn’t really count either.

by anonymous on Aug 24, 2008 2:48 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Good points

Although I don’t think it would be clutch if Beltran did that in the NLCS. He’s already shown that he couldn’t produce in one specific at bat, so we already know he can’t be clutch in the NLCS.

Beltran has to do that with 2 outs in Game 7 of the World Series. Against the Yankees. Otherwise he isn’t clutch.

comparison

to great a young pitcher who did end up blowing out his shoulder at age 27 and was never the same

tune on over to WFAN

It’s refreshing to hear Eddie Coleman call a few innings — though, be warned, the Haginator continues to step all over his play-by-play.

Ausmus

That was unfortunately Schneideresque.

by anonymous on Aug 24, 2008 4:04 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

... and the punter kicks a field goal

I think I made a mistake there: it was really Feliciano who was being batting-practice-esque.

I was inspired by Eric's comment that Olerud had the best 3-year run as a Met outside Carlos Beltran to look at a few different Mets, and when I noticed that two of my all-time favorite players (Alfonzo and Strawberry) were kinda screwed by having (relatively)bad seasons in between some really good seasons, I decided to see which Mets had the best 3 seasons, period (non-consecutively). Beltran still comes out on top, but my all-time favorite player Alfonzo comes in 2nd place, and him and Straw are the only two to have three 6.0+ WAR seasons. Also interesting that Hundley comes out ahead of Gary Carter, Cleon Jones almost finishes ahead of Mike Piazza, and Joe McEwing doesn't make the list.
