Too Legit To Quit: Mets 6, Phillies 3

It's funny: on Tuesday night, even when the Mets led 7-0, I had little doubt they would find a way to blow the game. Yet last night, trailing by a run in the eighth, I thought there was no way they'd ever win. Well, they won, they're back in first place, and the disaster of the previous night is all but forgotten. For better or worse.

Johan Santana wasn't at his best, and the Mets' offense was mostly held in check by Kyle Kendrick. Down 3-1 in the sixth, Carlos Delgado put the rest of the team on his back and solo homer-ed the Mets back in the game, knotting the game at three when he poked his second longball of the game over the short porch in left with two outs in the eighth. The Mets' offense erupted for three more runs that inning, and a trio of Met relievers combined to pitch two perfect innings to close things out.

The Mets have a *gasp* day off Thursday before heading to Florida for three games against the Marlins, featuring Instant Replay™.

Last night!

I haven’t had that much fun since I put a 6 foot inflatable gumby on the roof of my high school as a senior prank and then thrown in the back of a sqaud car.

"Saturday, Donny, is Shabbos, the Jewish day of rest. That means that I don't work, I don't get in a car, I don't fucking ride in a car, I don't pick up the phone, I don't turn on the oven, and I sure as shit don't fucking roll! Shomer shabbos!"

delgado's OPS+ is now 124

he’s making a lot of fans eat the words, especially me. if we’re not in the teixiera sweepstakes you’d have to pick up his option for next year, right? i mean its still a tough call but what other good options are out there?

Dunn

Not that I’m necessarily sure I’d take him for five-six years if I thought I could keep Delgado for one-two and have him sustain this level.

yeah, Dunn

It might make sense to pick up Delgado’s option anyway, though. I’d love to see him and Dunn splitting time at 1B and Dunn playing some games in LF.

if dunn has another year in the OF in him

so that he could then take over first the following year then we’d really have something. i think he’s pretty much finished out there tho. i fear he may also head to the AL so he can DH too.

he definitely another option tho that i would support. i forgot that he had just gotten traded and not resignd.

I like Dunn

But I don’t know that you’d want a platoon at 1B where both of them are lefties and neither of them is particularly good in the field.

they split the series, which is what I expected

And while the Mets lost a game they should’ve won, they also won a game the Phillies should’ve won, so it’s even.

The Phils have to head to Chicago for a 4-game set against the best team in the NL (if not all of baseball). Hopefully the Cubs will brutalize them while the Mets pummel the fading Marlins. Only 3 games left with the Phils (at Shea), so the Mets simply have to take care of business against the Marlins of the world.

Brian Schneider

every time I abuse this guy on one of these threads, he actually does something to help us win a big game. So for the rest of the year, I will scream Schneider Sucks!! and watch him shine. I am like a reverse jinx for that guy.

Scheider

Enough with blaming the pen for the other night. The second baseman threw an absolute strike to Schneider which he turned into a short hop by getting on the foul side of home plate to field. And somebody please tell him to watch some film of Grote whose mask would have been 10 feet away ,not blocking his vision on a throw he HAD to field and get the runner on. Ahh , it’s only fundamentals , if they dont give a s..t , why do I ?

+1

However, if you look in that game thread, you’ll see about 12 different people post the same thought after that play: “Schneider sucks beyond words”.

I was inspired by Eric's comment that Olerud had the best 3-year run as a Met outside Carlos Beltran to look at a few different Mets, and when I noticed that two of my all-time favorite players (Alfonzo and Strawberry) were kinda screwed by having (relatively)bad seasons in between some really good seasons, I decided to see which Mets had the best 3 seasons, period (non-consecutively). Beltran still comes out on top, but my all-time favorite player Alfonzo comes in 2nd place, and him and Straw are the only two to have three 6.0+ WAR seasons. Also interesting that Hundley comes out ahead of Gary Carter, Cleon Jones almost finishes ahead of Mike Piazza, and Joe McEwing doesn't make the list.
