Schneider lost that game the other night for us.

Schnieder (and a few other catchers) have got to learn what most H.S. catchers were taught at one time. YOU WEAR A MASK PAL , LOSE IT ON INCOMING THROWS.  Fielding low throws is particularly tough with a mask on. He made that one into a short hop situation by not coming even with the line instead of letting the ball 'play him' behind the plate. I'll admit ,that would've been a damn good putout had he made the play. Major leagers are expected to make good putouts. That's why they're Major Leagers.

Schneider

Suffice it to say his reputation as a superlative defensive catcher has been staggeringly exaggerated. He doesn’t receive the ball well on throws, he doesn’t catch the ball from the pitcher with regularity, his plate-blocking is nothing to write home about.

Well, at least he makes up for it with his bat *rolls eyes*

Schneider's mask

Huh, that didn’t occur to me at the time but you’re absolutely right.

all of the catchers do it

they won’t take their masks off and they constantly fuck up plays at the plate because of it

Hockey mask vs. Helmet mask?

Those goalie-style masks (like Schneid’s) are a plus for catcher safety, but they aggravate the problem you describe. Harder to take off, smaller field-of-vision, especially for low stuff. (Why do you think world-class goalies still get scored on 5-hole?)

I did it like this / I did it like that / I did it with a Wiffle Ball bat

I’d say world-class goalies still get scored on 5-hole because their legs have to be apart to push off to move from side to side, not necessarily because they can’t see things in that area. The goalie has to see the puck coming and react to it long before it’s actually down by his legs.

Oh, well sure, if you insist on being logical about it.

Sorry, it’s a character flaw of mine.

I was inspired by Eric's comment that Olerud had the best 3-year run as a Met outside Carlos Beltran to look at a few different Mets, and when I noticed that two of my all-time favorite players (Alfonzo and Strawberry) were kinda screwed by having (relatively)bad seasons in between some really good seasons, I decided to see which Mets had the best 3 seasons, period (non-consecutively). Beltran still comes out on top, but my all-time favorite player Alfonzo comes in 2nd place, and him and Straw are the only two to have three 6.0+ WAR seasons. Also interesting that Hundley comes out ahead of Gary Carter, Cleon Jones almost finishes ahead of Mike Piazza, and Joe McEwing doesn't make the list.
