Friday Applesauce

Christina Kahrl explains why the Mets have a better chance of making the playoffs than the Yankees. Her findings are based on Baseball Prospectus's Playoff Odds Report.

Nate Silver thinks Barry Bonds might be a good fit with the Mets. I've supported signing Bonds basically all season now, so I'm not likely to change my position at this point. Having said that, I'd still wager dollars to donuts that he plays nowhere this season.

The fact that the Mets' bullpen and/or lack of hitting has cost Johan Santana numerous wins this season doesn't bother him. The fact remains that with some better support he could be looking at 13-15 wins, and with his sub-3.00 ERA he'd be within reach of a 20-win season and would certainly be in the Cy Young discussion.

At MetsGeek, Alex Nelson looks at the pitchers the Mets will face against the Marlins this weekend.

At MetsBlog, Matt Cerrone and Ted Berg interview Giuseppe Franco. Awesome.

bonds

whats the worst that happens with this guy on your team or the rest of the year? the wilpons waste 5 millions bucks? who cares, they’ll still be rich.

bonds as a club house cancer is a concern, but it wont be the same situation he had with the giants. there he was an established big asshole on campus and could do whatever he wanted. now he’ll be a known indicted rented merc coming into a new club house. i dont care how big of a prick he is, i have faith in the rest of the team managing to stay professional and deal with the distraction of bonds.

with church likely out for the season, why the hell not? we’re too close to a play off spot to not try something like this.

Giles

The Red Sox have outfielders coming out their ass and yet they see fit to put a claim in on Giles. The Mets have outfielders that suck ass and yet they do nothing.

You can make an argument that at this point in the season it’s too late for Bonds to really be effective. He is old, he can’t play defense, and it’s going to take a while to get into playing shape.

But there is no argument to be made for not attempting to get Giles. He’s hitting .295/.390/.423 playing in one of the worst hitting environments in baseball. He would fit perfectly into the number 2 slot, so there might actually be some players on base in the first inning for Wright and Beltran.

This is just one more example of Omar’s incompetence. He has to go!

*Unless the Wilpons hire someone more incompetent which they will probably do. Then I will be longing for the sometimes benign incompetence of Omar.

Giuseppe Franco

Giuseppe Franco is great. He seems like a really down-to-earth guy. I’d like to have a beer with him and hear some stories. Maybe he should run for president of the USA.

Also, I posted this on another thread, but check out the client list on his Web site. It’s no joke.

I especially like that his website could easily pass for softcore porn.

Yeah, Mickey Rourke's pretty cool.

I cooked for him once. Nice guy, but let’s just say it’s easy to understand why Rodriguez cast him in Sin City.

I was inspired by Eric's comment that Olerud had the best 3-year run as a Met outside Carlos Beltran to look at a few different Mets, and when I noticed that two of my all-time favorite players (Alfonzo and Strawberry) were kinda screwed by having (relatively)bad seasons in between some really good seasons, I decided to see which Mets had the best 3 seasons, period (non-consecutively). Beltran still comes out on top, but my all-time favorite player Alfonzo comes in 2nd place, and him and Straw are the only two to have three 6.0+ WAR seasons. Also interesting that Hundley comes out ahead of Gary Carter, Cleon Jones almost finishes ahead of Mike Piazza, and Joe McEwing doesn't make the list.
