Amazin' Avenue Swag Contest: August Results

Congratulations to Catsmeat Potter-Pirbright, the winner of the Amazin' Avenue Swag Contest for August!

For those of you who are new to the site or who still don't know what the deal is, all of the information about the contest can be found in the left sidebar under "AA SWAG CONTEST". There you will find a link to the current game, the current month's scoreboard, and the contest rules. If you have any questions about the contest I ask that you read over the rules first. If anything is still unclear after reading them then by all means fire away.

For winning the August contest, Catsmeat Potter-Pirbright claimed -- among several options -- the The New York Mets: Greatest Games of Shea Stadium, which is a six-disc collection featuring six historic Shea games in their entirety.

Having won a month, Catsmeat Potter-Pirbright is not eligible to win another monthly contest this season. If the Mets are fortunate enough to make the postseason we will have some sort of playoff contest, so he would be eligible for any prizes there. Also, there's a chance to win a prize every single game for racking up a perfect 100 on that day's contest, so he (or any other monthly winner) could still cash in there. It's not easy to score perfectly; you have to get all five questions right, including nailing the pitcher's game score right on the nose. However, this is a neat way for past winners to keep playing and for folks who missed a few games or joined the monthly contest too late to participate and still win a prize even if they are too far behind to win the monthly contest.

Here are the top ten scores for the month of August:

# User Score
1 Catsmeat Potter-Pirbright 1231
2 simons 1168
3 anonymous 1155
4 IanB in MD 1034
5 Sesmus 997
6 mmxii 979
7 kingcritical 934
8 beelzebot 858
9 ams258 845
10 BobbyV_Incognito 791

The full August scoreboard can be found here. You may notice the occasional duplicate entry because some folks have filled in forms using different e-mail addresses. As a reminder, the scores for the month are aggregated by username and e-mail, so make sure you use the same ones every day. Also, make sure the e-mail address you use matches the one you signed up with here on AA.

Thanks again to everyone who participated this month. I think we all had a lot of fun, and hopefully it made the games and the game chatters here a little more interesting. Here's to more fun and even more participation in September.

Family pride

First my brother wins, now I win . . . I’d say the family was taking things over but, you know, we can’t win again this season. Ah well.

Simons? Sorry you couldn’t back up all your smack-talk. But I’m pulling for you this month, buddy. Finishing in second five times (or whatever) must be pretty rough.

'Catsmeat!' he cried. 'I see it all. It was that chump, Catsmeat.'

Excellent

You don’t see Art Brut songs referenced every day

We're fans

We missed all but about a song-and-a-half of their show at Irving Plaza in October 2006 to watch game 7 of the NLCS at a bar on Houston Street (the name of which I can’t remember but I did walk past it early sunday morning — next to a gas station).

'Catsmeat!' he cried. 'I see it all. It was that chump, Catsmeat.'

Art Brut

I saw them in Philly when they opened for the Hold Steady. I left after their set ten different kinds of happy. I didn’t bother seeing HS. Nuts to that. Art Brut rocked my world.

That sounds like an excellent show, two great bands

Going to see the HS in November, couldn’t make it to their gig at McCarren Pool earlier in the summer.

They do put on a good show

I saw HS/Art Brut in Columbus, OH last year. Great time. Got very drunk. Also shared a cab with the Brut. Nice guys, even tho they stuck me with the cab fare (but offered me guest list access to the show).

Swag: busticated!

Eric, I know it might not be up to you, but the Swag Site is busted.

It gives you a message that says “This Account Has Been Suspended. Please contact the billing/support department as soon as possible.”

We've got ourselves a ball club, the Mets of New York town!

Bwah-Ha-Ha!

Since my brother and I won our prizes, none of you can! Ha! Now who is the evil genius?

I hope your brother isn't holding his breath

I still haven’t gotten my swag from the bullpen contest like a month ago. God, what a worthless guy that Eric Simon is.

Um, I mean, don’t ban me from the extremely well-maintained site, sir.

Hey, I got mine.

And it included a kind note from Mr. Simon. I trust that in time you will all get what you have coming to you.

I hope not

I talk a lot of shit, some of what I have coming to me is probably bad

I know

It will go out this week. I promise.

Yea

The guy who hosts the game form forgot to pay his bill. It’ll be offline for a couple of days. I’m going to move the application to my own server for next season so we don’t have to deal with this.

I was finally in the lead for once!!!!

The last month

I’d rather win by continuing to randomly pick values…

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.
