Well

Out of our hands . . . just fucking win this win and let’s see what happens.

Let’s Go Mets! Ya Gotta Believe!

'Catsmeat!' he cried. 'I see it all. It was that chump, Catsmeat.'

Super positive thread

Good vibes, people. We have the whole offseason to piss and moan. Let’s Go Mets!

by Eric Simon on Sep 27, 2008 12:56 PM EDT   0 recs

ha

Maybe you’ve forgotten who you’re dealing with here. Pissing and moaning are the only option.

by anonymous on Sep 27, 2008 1:09 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Maybe everyone can at least hold off until after the rain delay, anyway.

'Catsmeat!' he cried. 'I see it all. It was that chump, Catsmeat.'

by Catsmeat Potter-Pirbright on Sep 27, 2008 1:11 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

fucking rain delay.

I can’t believe Omar couldn’t have done something about this terrible weather. Man, what an incompetent. Paul DePodesta would have used a sophisticated meteorological computer to work out his pitching plan.

… there, that took care of that.

by anonymous on Sep 27, 2008 1:13 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

yeah

let me get back to you on that

The butcher and the baker and the people on the street, where did they go? To meet the Mets!

by Rod Gaspar Fan Club on Sep 27, 2008 1:15 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I guess

One benefit of the rain delay is that Santana is getting closer and closer to pitching on full rest.

by Eric Simon on Sep 27, 2008 1:37 PM EDT   0 recs

Off-topic

Does it bother anyone else that Kelsey Grammer spells his last name with an “e”?

by Eric Simon on Sep 27, 2008 1:40 PM EDT   0 recs

It's a common mistake.

That’s one of the most common misspellings in English, so it just shows he’s not really that different from the rest of us. At least Aaron and Tori have better Spelling.

by anonymous on Sep 27, 2008 1:42 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

It bothers me that his hair is nothing like Sideshow Bob's hair.

'Catsmeat!' he cried. 'I see it all. It was that chump, Catsmeat.'

by Catsmeat Potter-Pirbright on Sep 27, 2008 1:43 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

If it's any consolation

Sideshow Cecil’s hair looks kinda like David Hyde Pierce’s.

by Eric Simon on Sep 27, 2008 1:48 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

OK

one inning down. Maybe that rain delay did Johan some good.

'Catsmeat!' he cried. 'I see it all. It was that chump, Catsmeat.'

by Catsmeat Potter-Pirbright on Sep 27, 2008 1:52 PM EDT   0 recs

so far so good

If Santana can give us five or six innings, we can’t expect any better.

by anonymous on Sep 27, 2008 1:53 PM EDT   0 recs

mark my words

with this god awful bullpen he will give us more than that

again, so far, so good

They look like they showed up ready to play today.

by anonymous on Sep 27, 2008 1:57 PM EDT   0 recs

Okay

Single, steal, single. Runners on the corners, none out.

by Eric Simon on Sep 27, 2008 1:57 PM EDT   0 recs

Alright

1-0. Nice to get a run in from third. A hit would’ve been nicer, but beggars can’t be choosers.

by Eric Simon on Sep 27, 2008 1:58 PM EDT   0 recs

There's one!

Let’s score more than that!

'Catsmeat!' he cried. 'I see it all. It was that chump, Catsmeat.'

I'm here for one last burst of enthusiasm!

However, if any of you are out of town subscribers to “Extra innnings” and like me, can’t see the damn game on account of Faux policy feel free to email me and join my powerful social movement. I plan to spend/waste all my time this winter petitioning MLB to amend this ridiculous policy.

Santana looks strong

maybe he can put to test this crap that he has to have 4days rest-that he can only go 5 or 6. He’s a stud. A gamer. The best in the game. May prove to be the real bright spot in another disappointing season.

So glad MLB Extra Innings isn't showing this game.

I’d even take the Marlins announcers right now, I’d just mute it.

Fannnnntastic.

MLB.tv is a great deal, $20 a month and you can watch anything. Well except for the games they black out in your home area. But it’s a great deal for out-of-market fans like meeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

I'm not completely sure what a sopcast is.

But it is magical.

That’s how I watched Maine’s almost no-hitter last season.

Just got in from hitting up the farmers market, didn’t realize they had started because they were delayed when I left. Quick first 3.5 innings.

me too

But I seem to recall that Beltran hates batting second, and I’m concerned that he be happy — as long as Murphy and not the second baseman du jour is the alternative 2-hole hitter.

by anonymous on Sep 27, 2008 2:41 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

which is weird

because he’s got great skills as a #2 hitter and also because he’s GOOD at it – his career OPS in the #2 spot is .924, better than anywhere else in the lineup except 7th/8th (which I assume must’ve been way early in his career with KC and is only 141 combined plate appearances)

by JoshNY on Sep 27, 2008 2:50 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

yes

(with the caveat that lineups don’t really matter much) Beltran’s skills seem like a natural fit for the #2 spot — great on-base ability, real homer power but also constant doubles threat, amazing baserunning (best SB ever!). All that to me adds up to a natural fit in the 2-hole. But, because lineups don’t matter much, I still think it’s more important to keep the dude comfortable and happy with his role.

by anonymous on Sep 27, 2008 2:54 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

sorry

that should read “best SB rate ever!” (obviously).

by anonymous on Sep 27, 2008 2:54 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

true, as I understand it they don't matter much

maybe he sees better pitches as #2? maybe he’s just trying really hard to show that he’s awesome so that he gets moved back to 3/4/5?

by JoshNY on Sep 27, 2008 2:56 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

refresh my memory

With all the statistical studies (or “the” study) that argue that lineup doesn’t matter, then why don’t they advocate having your four worst hitters hit 1-4? Your best hitters still need to hit more often right? A team like this that often lacks a certain chemistry on offense, I would not take any option off the table.

If Beltran could help the team more in the 2 hole, than I don’t see the argument that he shouldn’t bc he’s not “happy” there.

by itsmetsforme on Sep 27, 2008 3:06 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

yeah, the most important thing is the number of ABs

Hitters higher in the lineup sometimes get one more AB late in a game, so they end up getting a couple dozen more ABs over a full season. That’s about the sum total of the lineup’s effect.

by anonymous on Sep 27, 2008 3:07 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

my default assumption is that Belty would

embiggen the team more in the 2 hole with the particular skill he has.

I don't believe it's "doesn't matter"

I believe it’s “doesn’t matter much”

there’s a piece on this here (note: PDF).

by JoshNY on Sep 27, 2008 3:10 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

thanks

I’ve seen that argument before but. I dunno. I guess I just hold out hope for some magical tweak that would address the way this particular offense goes cold at the same time so often. Isolate the contagion.
