Too bad the game was during the day...

I was in rehearsal all day and missed it. Sounds like an amazing game.

It pretty much was amazing.

That is, Johan was pretty much amazing. I guess it’s why he’s here.

Is 2008 another 2007?

So, I only monitored the game via some GameCast and then, ultimately, cell phone. Without seeing it, to me, John Santana gave one of the guttiest, clutch performances I can imagine in the situation. 3 days rest, threw a ton of pitches, and didn’t let the bullpen come near the game to get a shutout. And not just a shutout, gave the bullpen a much needed day of rest (especially seeing that we haven’t had a day off in weeks.)

But, is 2008 another 2007? Check out the parallels.

In both seasons, we obviously spent a portion of the season totally sucking. Our offense shows this rare ability to find magical ways to blow scoring chances.

In the last month, the Mets start to slide a bit. With a sizable lead (albeit larger in 2007), the Mets start losing games to bad teams and fall behind late in the season.

Here’s where it gets creepy.

Both seasons feature a ball-buster loser. In 2007, it was the game where the Mets scored big runs late against the Marlins to seemingly win it — only to have the Marlins put up 4 or so runs in the 9th and go on to win…a cruel, cruel defeat.

In 2008, it was the Cubs game where the Mets failed to hold the 5-1 lead, only to find themselves tied 6-6 int he 9th when Murphy leads off with a TRIPLE. Somehow, with their three best hitters to follow, the Mets fail to even get the ball out of the infield and don’t score…then lose in the 10th when, after getting 2 out, Ayala explodes and give up 3.

The same cruel loss.

In both seasons, the Mets enter the last series tied with the other team (we’ll stick with the Brewers for this analogy). Both final series’ are against the Marlins. At home.

In both seasons, the Mets lost the first game (in lame style) and fall a game back. Now, that leads us to today.

Do you remember what happened in 2007? John Maine pitched a near NO-HITTER and the Mets win in a shutout over the Marlins. HOPE IS RESTORED.

So, now we lead into tomorrow, a day game against the Marlins. The Mets will pitch a lefty. And what happened in 2007? Glavine gave up 7 runs in the 1st and that sealed his Mets career.

Yes, folks. Remember how you felt when Tom Glavine gave us no chance in the final game? We are at this EXACT point again. In fact, Perez’s first inning will give me chills. All I can say is I hope he gives us a damn chance this time.

The 2008 NY Mets: Pedro hurt already. Delgado still sucks. Mets still can't beat the Braves. Beltran only plays 6 innings. WTF with Pelfrey?? Mets win 60 in a row. Freakin' Wagner. PLAYOFFS, NO WAY?!

by ZaBlanc on Sep 28, 2008 12:50 AM EDT   0 recs

Eh.

There are plenty of parallels but, I’ll just choose to ignore them.

'Catsmeat!' he cried. 'I see it all. It was that chump, Catsmeat.'

Sorry

I’m certainly not trying to insinuate a prediction. I’m just marveling at what seems like such an identical season. It because especially apparent after the big pitching performance yesterday, because I could never get over how John Maine, when faces with a huge Met disaster, nearly handed us the first no-hitter in Met history. NO ONE would have expected it.

I hope Perez break the parallelism and launches us you know where. Let’s see Shea end with a great, great memory.

Amen to that.

an identical season?

what?

last year the Mets were in first place essentially all season long and famously had a massive lead on September 12th that got away. up to the point when the collapse began, their pitching was the best in the division but the offense had scored more runs only than Washington.

this year the Mets were up and down in the standings all year including spending some time in fourth place leading to Willie’s firing. they had all of a one-game lead on September 1st and it was never bigger than, what, three games? the offense has scored the most runs in the division and the second most in the NL, but the pitching has given up more runs than Philly and is just middle-of-the-road in the league.

it’s just plain lazy to say that what’s happened this year is the same as what happened last year simply based on the fact that the last few days of the season have been the same when the seasons as a whole have been altogether different, and while I expect that from newspaper columnists trying to create a story where none exists, I don’t see any reason why we need to indulge in it here.

by JoshNY on Sep 28, 2008 11:04 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

well said.

Last year’s team, I’m afraid, was a lot better than this year’s team, making the Unprecedented Collapse a much bigger story. This year was just a pennant/wild card race among a group of flawed teams in a relatively bad league that had only one runaway champion. Honestly, the Mets are still about as good as anybody in the league except the Cubs, but that’s not much of an accomplishment these days, in an NL that has “parity” in the sense of comparative mediocrity being spread widely. And the competition is still basically to see who gets the privilege of being flattened by the AL team in the World Series.

Here is one non-parallel

Glavine 2007 vs FLA: 11.2 IP 0-1 10.03 ERA 8 K 4 BB Game Scores 55, 31, 11
Perez 2008 vs. FLA: 31 IP 3-0 2.03 ERA 32 K 16 BB Game Scores 69, 47, 60, 78, 59

I know it’s a stretch but I need to do something to try have faith in Ollie.

No matter what happens today

I am proud of this team and don’t think it is like last year at all. The Mets overcame not only the sting of last year’s collapse, the wrath of their fans and the press and the circus surronding their former manager but more important, devastating and I mean DEVASTATING injuries. You tell me what other team loses their closer, number #2 starter, left fielder for bascially the entire year, his replacement down the stretch and their right fielder for say 2/3 of the season and is still in contention for a wild card. That they are even at this point is nothing short of a miracle. And if we get the good Oliver Perez today, the dream can continue for at least a while longer. We have nothing to be ashamed of. Nothing.
I’ll be at Shea today so I won’t be able to log on. I just wanted to say that this was my first season where I was active in reading and commenting on this blog and I really enjoyed it. Thanks. You are all smart, passionate Mets fans and I enjoyed the banter and analysis from all of you, even when I disagreed with your points. That is what makes a true fan and a great blog. Thanks to Eric and all of you for your efforts. And I can’t wait to see the playoff posts!!!
LETS GO METS!!!!

Uncle Lou's Farewell Address

Since some of us are hailing farewell, I’d like to go ahead and get mine on the record.

First and foremost I would like to thank Eric Simon:
1. For not banning me in the early days.
2. For managing the blog, making it informative and entertaining at the same time. (That’s hard to do w/almost anything these days).

AWARDS:

  • Most Accommodating Blogger goes to: Bobby V Incognito – Thanks for your friendliness on the blog BVI. Intonation is always hard to figure in anything written in an electronic format such as: Emails / Blogs. So your patience and friendliness are much appreciated.
  • Funniest Blogger goes to: ITSMETSFORME. Hands down, some of the funniest comments this side of the Mississippi. I’m still laughing…
  • Most Difficult To Get Along With Blogger: “On no…We have a tie!” Catsmeat Potter-Pirbright and Anonymous. Upon my third or fourth day blogging they were on my a$$ like stink on Limberger. However, this was a good thing, because they forced me to understand that, this isn’t your typical blog and we’re trying to maintain a blog that can be “unlike” other blogs in their crassness and vulgarity. Indirectly they’ve also made me pay more attention to ‘stats’, something I’ve never done before. Sure, I’ve been a METS fan since ’97, but I had never bothered to take a look underneath the surface for what makes a baseball team tick. Hell, I always thought it was just good enough to yell. Thanks kids!

Finally, I would like to give a shout out to some bloggers that didn’t receive awards however, were influential in my growth as an Amazin Avenue blogger: “Pingel, Josh NY (man, you’re tough), KenDynamo, RodGasperFanClub, & LosAngelesMets. I know that I’ve left some people out, for that, I sincerely apologize. "Who Loves Ya Baby?!”

LET’S GO METS! YA GOTTA’ BELIEVE!! WHATEVER IT TAKES!!!
