Page 2 Slams Mets' New Patch, Is Right
Paul Lukas of ESPN.com has taken the time to ridicule the Mets' new sleeve patch commemorating their inaugural season at Citi Field. Sadly, he's absolutely right: it's the most boring, unoriginal, completely thoughtless logo this side of a Congressional campaign. And yes, the Yankees have unveiled a very nice patch of their own. Lukas goes on to mock Citigroup and the effect of the Bernie Madoff scandal on Fred Wilpon. Enjoy.

KingC that's hilarious.
Who on earth came up w/this lousy design? If it weren’t so laughable it’d be depressing. One thing is certainly strange though – Isn’t it befitting that Citi and the Mets share the same colors. God, that’s just even more depressing.

If it makes you feel better
Citi does not share our blue and orange scheme in their corporate logo:

'Oh yes, I know all about that duty-of-a-citizen stuff. It doesn't go. There are exceptions to every rule, and this was one of them. When a man risks his liberty to come and root at a ball-game, you've got to hand it to him. He isn't a crook. He's a fan.'

Seriously it is atrocious
It’s like the Mets were figuring, “Hey, the Yankees are gonna get the back page anyway when the new stadiums open, so why bother trying?” Lukas makes a good point that the other “official” CitiField inaugural logo looks way better.
I did enjoy, however, the tidbit at the end of the article about Sabathia being the most pin-striped Yankee of all time. He is a large man.
'Oh yes, I know all about that duty-of-a-citizen stuff. It doesn't go. There are exceptions to every rule, and this was one of them. When a man risks his liberty to come and root at a ball-game, you've got to hand it to him. He isn't a crook. He's a fan.'

I can't believe
he’s bigger than David Wells.
Gotta agree that this patch is atrocious. It doesn’t even say what it’s the inaugural season for. Are the Mets an expansion team this year?
by cjmulrain on Jan 12, 2009 11:20 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Wells
That was my thought too, but Sabathia’s got about a half-foot and I’m guessing at least 60 pounds over Boomer. Still, Wells has got to be in the conversation.
'Oh yes, I know all about that duty-of-a-citizen stuff. It doesn't go. There are exceptions to every rule, and this was one of them. When a man risks his liberty to come and root at a ball-game, you've got to hand it to him. He isn't a crook. He's a fan.'
by Catsmeat Potter-Pirbright on Jan 12, 2009 11:27 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
yea
I guess Wells looks fatter, b/c he’s shorter. The full article by Lucas suggests that Randy Johnson may have the most pre-Sabathia, which seems hard to believe b/c he looks like a twig, but he only looks like a twig b/c he’s 6’10.
Also, looking at those photos, I’ve gotta say I liked the Yankees uniforms a lot better in the flannel days, with the thicker stripes. Now they just look like little league uniforms to me. But I think pretty much all uniforms looked better with the wool/flannel uniforms than they do today:

Give me the top one anyday.

CJ, check out the patch for the Nationals season opener at Nationals Park last year
Since I live in D.C. I purchased one of their therma base fleece warm up jerseys and it had the inaugural patch embroidered on it. Were it not for the patch I probably wouldn’t have bought it.
I was going to wait to purchase my Mets warm up jersey so that I could see what their patch looked like. Now that I’ve seen it, I’m not going to waste my money on it.

I noticed that a bunch of them didn’t explicitly say WHAT it was the inaugural season for – but at least they all featured images of the stadium. The only other one that I thought was pretty bad was the Astros Enron Field inaugural patch – it had a design, but it would be really tough to tell that it was for a new stadium. But it was still better than ours.

I figured out why
most of them don’t include the stadium names – MLB doesn’t allow corporate names on uniforms, and since the vast majority of stadiums are corporate named, they can’t put the name on the unis. The Yankees obviously don’t have that problem. But still, most other teams put SOMETHING on there that made you realize it was the inaugural season of a stadium.

"choking on my bran flakes"
Wait a sec. You’re telling me that MLB allows gargantuan signs of the sponsor on the stadiums however, will not allow an itty bitty, embroidered name of the same sponsor on the uniform? There’s no waiver for the "inaugural season patch?

I haven’t read enough of paul lukas to form an opinion…yet. I have read a great deal of how people on this blog hate / don’t respect / loathe certain sports writers. I’d be interested in hearing from bloggers; “Whom do you like?”
I’d like to expand my reading past:
Buster (my hair cut resembles a 3rd grader) Olney,
Tim (I know every odd stat known to mankind) Kurkjian and
Peter (pardon my spittle) Gammons.
Can anyone recommend someone worth their salt? Is there an MLB version of the NFL’s Peter King? Sure, maybe you don’t like him either but he seems to be well respected in the sports writing realm.
Thanks guys. (and gals)

I find the the Yankee patch (like everything associated with the team) overblown. I see the minimalism of the Met patch as subversive of romantic notions traditionally associated with baseball fields.

I don’t know what poor bastard is sewing these things in some sweatshop in China, Taiwan or Malaysia but there’s almost 3 whole months before the Mets play an “official” game @ Citi – Taxpayer Federal Bailout – Queens field. Surely, with enough hate/disgusted w/the patch mail, maybe the Mets can get the darn thing changed in time.

I know we've beaten a dead horse here but...
Before this Fan Shot loses the wind from its sails and floats away to Fan Shot oblivion, I’ve got one more round of irate vitriol that I’ve just got to get off of my chest.
I just read the NY Times article on the patch hoping to find that someone, somewhere was discussing the fan’s general disgust with such a lousy design and hopefully a change. To no avail. This IS it! It will not be changed. I can’t tell you how embarrassed I truly am. Another bad part about this is that for all of those who haven’t seen or heard about this STUPID patch, it will rear its ugly head again during the season. How many close ups and snide remarks are we going to have to endure?
Check out some of the comments from Citi officials and Mets personnel in the article:
Dave Howard, the Mets executive vice president for baseball operations:
"Everyone has their own point of view," Howard said. "Taste is very subjective, and we understand that and appreciate the passion of Mets fans."
BULLSHIT Dave! Apparently, you don’t understand the fans at all. (Sorry KingC. I know you just went over THE RULES yesterday, but I couldn’t bite my tongue on that one.)
Howard said the Mets were flattered that Citigroup designed a logo that incorporated the team’s blue and orange colors.
Uh, hello! You just don’t stop at agreeable colors DAVE! Once you’ve got the color scheme, that doesn’t mean you stop thinking about the design.
The official Citi Field logo has been widely panned as drab and too evocative of the Domino’s Pizza logo. But fans will have to get used to it, because it will be affixed to the side of every other seating row at the ballpark and used extensively in marketing and promotions, assuming the Citi name survives.
Good luck selling those seats when you implode Citi Field in 2059! Mark it down – It won’t be called Citi Field in 2059.
And finally:
The Mets do have an alternate inaugural season logo that features the windows of the distinctive rotunda at Citi Field. But Howard said that logo would be available only on merchandise sold at the ballpark. He added that the team would not change the sleeve patch, which will be used for all home games.
Han anyone seen this alternate logo? I’d love hate to see it!

read Lucas' original story
he has a link to it. It’s a quadrillion times better than what they’re using.
That said, at this point, if they backed down and went with a different patch, people would just make fun of them for caving to pressure. It’s a lose-lose situation at this point, and honestly I’d rather them be focusing on improving the team than some patch. But it’s embarrassing that this was what they came up with in the first place.
by cjmulrain on Jan 15, 2009 11:38 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree and disagree
I agree with you with respect to it’s more important to improve the team as opposed to the patch
but
I disagree with people would just make fun of them for caving into pressure. Were it not for revolt, mass disagreement, rally’s and things of that nature, how else would some things get changed? Don’t the fans matter? I think it would display that once and for all, the consumer does have a stake in the team/sponsor and is not just some cheap date they can drop off at the door after a romp in the closet.
