Mets Make Offer To Oliver Perez
"During tonight’s Hot Stove show on the MLB Network, SI.com’s Jon Heyman said the Mets offered free-agent LHP Oliver Perez a three-year deal, ‘worth close to $30 million.’"
Eric's take:
Interesting. I had read last week that Minaya favored Perez even though almost everyone else fancied Derek Lowe, but I didn't realize he liked him so much that he'd throw an offer out there. I think Perez will be about as quick to accept this deal as Lowe was to accept the 3/$36 million deal the Mets offered him (which was rebuffed and whose very existence has been denied by Scott Boras).
Clearly, Minaya is not content to lose both Lowe and Perez, so he now (reportedly) has offers on the table for each. Who knows where Boras will take this.

Trying to get the discount package deal?
Well at least we know the bottom numbers, I guess.

According to b-ref
he signed with KC a year ago, and then dropped off the face of the earth. Which is probably standard for guys who sign with the Royals.

I don't know what game is being played by omar
But I like it.
I’m trying to wrap my head around where this puts Boras.

Boy-o-boy...
Let the rambling commense. I feel like we’re about to be inundated so much free agent information/rumor/conjecture/punditry in the next few days concerning Perez and Lowe that it will be like drinking from a charged fire hose. I’m ready…

I have an idea
Let’s pay a player twice what he’s worth over 3 years, giving up our potential first round draft pick and the money to sign useful players.

Personally speaking
I’m willing to give Omar the benefit of the doubt for the time being. I don’t pretend to know what he’s trying to work out here, but I’ll wait until things reveal themselves a bit more.

Over Lowe? No. With Lowe? Yes. If we can't get Lowe at all? Yes.

any chance omar is trying to put pressure on lowe?
that could be the motivation behind the offer…3 years/less than $30 mil is not really a serious offer considering that perez wants something closer to 5 years/$70 mil.
i wouldn’t mind perez coming back for three more years, but the money would be better spent on lowe.

Maybe it is
But I don’t think Omar’s cagey enough to play that game, especially since both pitchers are repped by the same agent.

God, I hate Perez.
Stories like this make some stupid fans think Omar only likes Latin players.

I still don't get it.
Is Ollie the second coming of Koufax? No. But is he still a solid pitcher? Yes. I understand he’s going to get overpaid, but most MLB players are overpaid. Especially 27 year old LH pitchers with decent stats.
I really think this handwringing over the possibility of the Mets resigning Perez is getting a bit ridiculous.

i agree
i think the team will be pretty competitive with perez…he’s great as a fourth starter if pelf and maine can hold down the second and third spots in the rotation.
i don’t think he’s going to turn a corner and become consistent enough to become an ace, but i think he’s shown over the last two years that he’s not going to revert to his 5.00+ ERA years. whether the current version of perez is worth $10 mil per season is debatable, but he’s certainly not going to hurt the team if signed

Signing Perez doesn't hurt the team
But allowing Lowe to go to our division rival and “replacing” him with Perez does. It hurts a lot. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Braves close the gap in division standing projections. It’s not that no one wants Perez, it’s that no one wants him over someone like Sheets or Lowe. Especially when the difference between him and guys like Garland and Wolf is pretty small and allowing Ollie to walk will net us draft picks.

That's fine.
But then say that. It seems to me that some here want Lowe or Sheets so badly that they end up denigrating Perez. It is possible to state a preference for one player without tearing down another.

everyone thought that last year too, though
with Glavine back, a “healthy” Smoltz, a “healthy” Hudson, and a “healthy” Hampton. Hopefully Lowe ends up just as healthy as the rest of them…

Perez would be stupid not to take the offer
He just got a gift from the worst talent evaluator this side of Kansas City.
For $4M, Omar will waste two draft picks, pay Perez close to 2 times what he’s worth, and lose a good pitcher to a division rival. This is specifically Omar’s idiocy, we are told, because his staff appears to have some brains of sorts.
I think it’s a pipe dream to suppose that these are shrewd negotiations. Omar is an OK negotiator, but he never really drives hard bargains and usually pays close to market value for what he wants—note that he slightly overestimated the K-Rod market. This is the guy who gave us Luis Castillo, recall, and it seems little has changed. Omar lowballed Lowe and gave a gift to Perez because he is interested in Perez and only wants to look interested in Lowe. He is not pretending to suck. He sucks.
