4 YRS 60 MIL

The Atlanta Braves have offered the above for Derek Lowe.  I doubt very seriously that the Mets will even come close which is why they have extended the 3 yr 30 mil to Perez.  I would not go any higher than that for Perez, if he and Boras start getting greedy we need to look at other options.  Sheets anyone?  I think Sheets with the right incentive laden package is a far better option than Perez.

I'm not sure why anyone wouldn't want Sheets

I’d absolutely prefer him over Perez. And I also think his agent might actually be, you know, not a jerk.

I AGREE

Sheets to me is a much better option. His agent has put out his medical records for all teams to view. He’s in the best physical shape of his career and was 13-9 even with his bad elbow. Like I said, an incentive laden contract for one yr, and then we go from there. He’s right up there with the best in the game when he’s healthy, I think he’s going to put the injury bug behind him and be a solid #2 for a team willing to take a chance.

Sheets and Pettitte

Derek Lowe – FIP/xFIP

2005 – 4.10/3.53
2006 – 3.72/3.80
2007 – 3.88/3.50
2008 – 3.23/3.43

Andy Pettitte – FIP/xFIP

2005 – 3.03/3.29
2006 – 4.08/3.82
2007 – 4.00/4.47
2008 – 3.74/3.79

2009 Projection – FIP

Derek Lowe:

Bill James – 3.80
CHONE – 3.71
Marcel – 3.67

Andy Pettitte:

Bill James – 3.66
CHONE – 3.93
Marcel – 3.98

Why is one of these guys getting 6x what the other was offered?

Pettitte and Sheets would be a terrific, complimentary, bargain basement, 2 for 1 sale. Sheets ace upide is well documented, and the risks he brings are decreased with a durable veteran like Pettitte, not to mention another lefty to throw and the Phils and Braves.

Why?

Because Omar’s not that creative, and he can’t shake his mancrush on Ollie. Sheets and Pettite would be a nice bargain basement pair of signings. But it ain’t happening until one of us becomes GM.

I was inspired by Eric's comment that Olerud had the best 3-year run as a Met outside Carlos Beltran to look at a few different Mets, and when I noticed that two of my all-time favorite players (Alfonzo and Strawberry) were kinda screwed by having (relatively)bad seasons in between some really good seasons, I decided to see which Mets had the best 3 seasons, period (non-consecutively). Beltran still comes out on top, but my all-time favorite player Alfonzo comes in 2nd place, and him and Straw are the only two to have three 6.0+ WAR seasons. Also interesting that Hundley comes out ahead of Gary Carter, Cleon Jones almost finishes ahead of Mike Piazza, and Joe McEwing doesn't make the list.
