Rob Neyer is mostly right
Good description of Mets starting situation by one of my favorite writers, Rob Neyer. Only thing I disagree with is that Ollie is probably at best the 3rd best option for the Mets, and Sheets would be a great signing. Also, I could see a Niese/Redding combo at #5 being useful.

I just read
his other article about the Red Sox being nine deep in the rotation. I wonder if they would be interested in a Schneider (or Blastro) plus Evans for Bucholz deal (given Bucholz’s disappointing 08 but giant potential)…?

They won't trade Bucholz for Salty
So I would say no way.

Stock pile
If the Mets aren’t going to make an offer to Sheets, I think they should focus on stock piling some cheap reclamation projects. If they can get a few guys like Chuck James, Freddy Garcia, Mark Mulder, Jason Jennings, or Josh Fogg for cheap and shuttle them between Buffalo and New York based on health and performance, they might be able to piece together enough quality starts to survive the 4th and 5th spots.
I’d rather see them take a chance on this than commit long term to Ollie.

Garcia and Mulder are OK as reclamation projects
Maybe even Jennings; James and Fogg were never any good.
