Mets Discuss Sheets, Pettitte

From ESPN's Insider Rumor Central:

"The Mets are discussing Ben Sheets as a possible candidate for their rotation in case negotiations with Oliver Perez fall through, Newsday reported.

The newspaper reported the Mets do not want to end up bidding against themselves for Perez, but it's doubtful that a three-year deal, in the $30-million range will get it done. Perez is represented by Scott Boras, who steered another client, Derek Lowe, to the Braves rather than accept a deal with the Mets. Two of the most intriguing names still available are Sheets and Andy Pettitte, with the Mets only recently showing interest in the former Brewers ace. A person familiar with the situation told Newsday that Sheets is now being discussed, but it's unclear what the parameters of such a deal would be. As for Pettitte, Newsday said the Mets are not involved in any talks with the former Yankee."

Here's hoping Omar and his brain trust come to understand the benefits of Sheets over Perez.

Right

FanShots are perfectly suitable for links and quotes like this one. A FanPost should really be reserved for longer user-submitted pieces of insightful commentary or cogent analysis. Links are great, but they should be created as FanShots instead.

Ugh @ "in case negotations with Perez fall through"

I can understand the injury argument with Sheets but until this season most of his injury concerns have been isolated freak incidents. And imo not enough to prefer Perez over Sheets.

Not to mention Boras didn’t exactly steer Lowe away from us we either misplayed our hand or Omar wasn’t that interested in signing him in the first place.

If no one else is bidding for Perez

where is Boras going to steer him to? Do they really want to wait until the season starts and some GM gets desperate to fill out his rotation?

A plant.

This has all the earmarks of a story planted by Omar to make Perez and Boras a little nervous and more pliable in negotiations. I doubt Boras will be fooled. If the Mets were really interested in Sheets (and they should be), you don’t leak the news to Newsday, you make his agent an offer.

The hard number seems to be between $36 - $40 million.

Lowe gets offered 3yr / $12 mil per. He rejects it.
Perez may be offered around (ref. column above) 3yr / $10 mil per.
Pettite turned down 1yr / $10 from the Skanks. (Based on comparisons for what has and what may be offered for others) this seems to be about what would be offered to Pettite from the Mets.

So, after all of my blabbing, is it safe to assume that the Mets are only in a position to offer $36 – 40 mil for whatever is left out there with respects to pitching?

The Warm Stove is reporting that

Oliver Perez said that he wanted one and only one incentive in his future contract, regardless of how much the contract was worth.

That incentive? Dibs on costumes for this years halloween party.

Is Sheets really only looking for 2 yrs/$18 million?

If so, how does Omar not make that happen immediately?

Oh snap.

You went there.
In all honestly, though, I just think its more Omar is overestimating the severity of Sheets’ injury, or they know something we don’t know. I’d say most likely Omar just REALLY likes Perez.

I would start talks with Sheets at 2 years $18 mil and go from there.
With Perez I’d offer 3 years with a club option for a 4th at $10 mil per and I wouldn’t budge one bit.
