John Maine in 2009
Hello Mets fans,
I was wondering if anyone head any 'inside' info on John Maine's status for the start of 2009. He had shoulder surgery at the end of the season and was supposed to start long tossing in December. Is he on track?
Also, what are your expectations of him performance wise should he be healthy.
15+ W, 3.75 ERA, 1.25 Whip, 175 Ks too optimistic?
By the way, happy new year!

No news
is good news (I guess). I’d encourage everybody to post updates here as they find them.
You’re projection is a bit optimistic but entirely possible.

I can't find something more updated but
Here’s an article after Maine’s successful surgary, of note, he will beginning throwing in Decemeber and be ready for Spring Training. Also, the doctors said that it was the biggest bone spur they have ever seen and were surprised he could pitch with it. I read somewhere recently that he was on schedule and will be ready for spring training but I can’t find the link.
As for an excellent link to what Maine could do next season. I really agree with this article stating that you cannot just look at Maine’s numbers last season without realizing that his overall numbers are brought down by pitching through the injury. I see Maine beating projections that cannot take the latter into account and putting up a season slightly better than 2007, 4.18 FIP, 3.78 ERA, 180K, 1.27 WHIP, with this offense and bullpen, I’d say 15 wins is possible.

I love Maine
I think he could have a big season if he’s healthy. Remember how good he looked in Spring Training last year, before he got hurt? Hopefully he can pitch like that again this year, only save it for the regular season

Totally
Completely agree. I think he’s a real sleeper going into this year. Everyone’s pimping Pelfrey’s pretty ERA and 13 wins, but to me, its Maine I look for to step up in 2009 while Pelfrey is more of a step-back risk. I could see them passing each other by in opposite directions by midseason. That’s not to say I don’t like Pelfrey, but there are plenty of short-term red flags.
