Jose Reyes: Captain Of His Team's Box
You heard it here first, folks. According to an awkward translation of a photo caption from El Nacional:
Jerry Manuel elaborates, in what might actually be an English-to-Spanish-to-English translation:
"You can have 50 years of age and not be responsible and mature than ever. But if you have responsibilities, then comes the process of maturation. And I think that the more responsibility is, is obviously more mature, better player is."

One of my favorite translations
from the El Universal K-Rod article:
The troops led by Jerry Manuel has the urgent need to strengthen a bullpen that collectively failed harvest in the 29 previous victories, including seven laurels that Santana had secured his third Cy Young Award.
King of the bling come to lay down the evidence//Not George Bush, L-Millz be da president
New nicknames?
Santana: Laurel King
Frank Rod: Harvest King

If being a leader...
means his OBP will go up, lets do it.
"The torpedo de los Meters"
Oh man that might be as good of a nickname for Jose as King Ding-a-Ling.
'Oh yes, I know all about that duty-of-a-citizen stuff. It doesn't go. There are exceptions to every rule, and this was one of them. When a man risks his liberty to come and root at a ball-game, you've got to hand it to him. He isn't a crook. He's a fan.'

That kind of lyricism is reminiscent of

Well, you know what I say, Ken:
The bigger the cushion, the sweeter the pushin’. That’s what I said.

At first glance
I thought “then comes the process of maturation”
said “then comes (another word)”… I’ll keep this PG.

Generally, cuadro does mean "box"
In this context it means “team” though.
I’ll take a crack at translating the article…
New York Mets manager Jerry Manuel that he plans to give Jose Reyes more responsibility and a greater leadership role this season.
Reyes has been criticized on occasion for immaturity or lack of concentration, but in spite of this or because of this, Manuel believes that Reyes is ready for a greater mantle of leadership.
“There is no doubt,” said Manuel, “He has to be it. I think he should become a leader, yes. There is no doubt. I think that this is the next level for him, is added responsibility for him. For me that is maturation.”
“You can be 50 years old and (not sure about the rest of this sentence) if you don’t have any responsibilities you will never mature. And I think that when he has more responsibilities, obviously his maturity will improve, and he will become a better player.”
To this end, Manuel plans to put it to Reyes to handle all the defensive responsibilities of the infield, not just those of the shortstop. This may involve where the fielders are positioned or alerting teammates about defensive plays. Essentially, Reyes may become, in a sense, the defensive captain of the team.
Manuel, who does not plan to name a team captain, also identified Carlos Delgado, Johan Santana, David Wright and Carlos Beltran as team leaders.
really. My imagined view of Josh right now.

That Jerry Manuel translation could be a verbatim untranslated comment by Tim McCarver.

That's great.
I went back and re-read it with the McCarver voice in mind and I laughed out loud in the office. I imagine it would work with a lot of terrible announcer’s voices.

LOL
Wayne Hagin comes to mind.

It works pretty well with Harold Reynolds and Kevin Kennedy, too.
