Around SBN: The Ten Worst Swings Of The 2011 Season

AA Days at Camden Yards, June 16-18

Happy New Year!

Notice to AA folks in the mid-Atlantic region: For the first time in a long time, our New York Mets are playing baseball in Baltimore.  I live in Baltimore, so I'm ten kinds of excited.

The Mets are coming to play the O's on Tue-Thu, June 16-18.  All games start at 7:05 pm.  I think Mets fans in the mid-Atlantic region should think about getting together to enjoy the lovely stadium in Charm City.

Anyone interested in going to a game should let me know.  I can get some tickets lined up on each night.  I plan on being there, anyway, so I might as well have some company.

(The same month, the Mets are coming to Washington on June 5-7 for a weekend series.  I think my brother, Catsmeat PP, will be the for a couple games with me and maybe some of my loser friends who decided they are Nats fans.  If there is interest in that game, maybe I can work on something for that.)

The Orioles games will require me to miss some work

but I might not be too upset by all of that. We’ll see how it works out.

Whatever

You’re gonna be in town for the Nats games. It’s OK.

Remember the last time we were at Camden Yards for a Mets game? We yelled like mad when the Oriole Bird was in our section, so ‘he’ came over to eat your Mets hat.

Also, I think that’s the game where Dad learned how people in Baltimore pronounce the word “coke.”

Yeah, the Oriole Bird was a dick

Bobby V – the Ballmer pronunciation of “coke” is something along the lines of “cayouke.” Hard to spell, but once it’s in your head you don’t forget it.

It's like this

Im not hooked on phonics, so I don’t know how to write out the phonetic way the people of Baltimore pronounce “Coke”, but it’s like this:

The ‘co’ is said like “coe”, making the ‘o’ more pronounced. The rest is the same like the rest of us. The thing is that our father didn’t believe me. When the vendor came up to our section yelling “Coe-ke, Dite Coe-ke” he nearly lost it.

You know what's really funny?

Until you mentioned the vendor selling Diet Coke, I thought you guys had been talking about drugs at the game. Soda never even entered my mind.

I forgot about "dite"

they made it a one-syllable word.

Baltimore

I really want to come down for those games, but it’s tough to leave town during the school year since Kim’s a middle school teacher. More likely will be the Mets’ series in Washington in mid-July if anybody wants to meet up for that.

It's on!

If you want to set up an AA day during that series, I will help.

I live in DC

so I’d definitely go to the Nats series’ – possibly the Baltimore one, depending on what I’m doing this summer

Cool.

We’ll keep you in the loop.

Hmm

Love to come down for the games at the O’s (especially since Camden Yards has been on my list of places to go see a game for the longest time) but weeknights are tough as others have mentioned. At this point the weekend series against the Nats seems more likely.

Tickets on Sale Tomorrow

Orioles have single game tickets going on sale tomorrow. I signed up for their newsletter to be able to buy tickets yesterday.

Seem the field box seats are already gone (at least for the Thurs night game) so don’t wait to get tickets if you want to go.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
